June 9, 2018 – Women gather to sing chants with repetitive sermons at the house of the Kaliph General of the Layene Sufi brotherhood in Yoff, Dakar. The believers organise themselves in groups which are called Dahiras. Once a year they visit the house of their highest spiritual leader to sing for him, pray with him, pay their contribution and receive his blessing. Chanting is an important element of the religious practices of the Layenes. Weekly they hold a ceremony called the "chants religieux", which they begin on Saturday night and continue until the dawn prayer on Sundays. These chants consist of energetic and repetitive sermons. The Layenes are the smallest of the four major Sufi brotherhoods in Senegal. They can be recognized by their flawless white dresses which they regard as a symbol of purity.
Christian Bobst (* 1971 in der Schweiz) studierte ursprünglich Grafikdesign. Fast 15 Jahre lang arbeitete er für Werbeagenturen in der Schweiz und in Deutschland. 2010 machte er sich selbständig und begann als freiberuflicher Dokumentarfotograf zu arbeiten. Seitdem hat er zahlreiche Fotoreportagen und Aufträge in Europa, Afrika, Asien, Nord- und Südamerika erstellt. Seine Arbeiten wurden in Magazinen, Tageszeitungen und Online-Medien wie GEO, Stern, The Guardian, National Geographic, Die Zeit, NZZ, LensCulture und 6mois veröffentlicht. Christian gewann zahlreiche Awards im In- und Ausland, unter anderem 2020 beim POYi, zuvor beim World Press Photo Award, dem NPPA, beim vfg Swiss Photo Award und der ewz Selection. Christian Bobst lebt in Zürich und ist Mitglied der Fotoagentur laif in Deutschland.
