Die Galerie Buchkunst Berlin präsentiert die Ausstellung „All around the world – unseen color & early black and white“ mit Fotografien des legendären Magnum-Fotografen Thomas Hoepker. Aus RIO – HONG KONG – NEW YORK – NEAPEL – PARIS stammen die zahlreichen unveröffentlichten und frühen Aufnahmen Hoepkers, die nun erstmalig gezeigt werden.
Mehr als ein Jahrzehnt bevor der Begriff New Color Einzug in die Fotografie-Geschichte hielt, fotografierte Thomas Hoepker bereits mit Kodachrome und Ektachrome-Diafilmen in Südostasien, Afrika, Südamerika und vielen Ländern Europas. Eine absolute Entdeckung! In den umfangreichen Konvoluten an unveröffentlichten Diafilmen, welche Thomas Hoepker ab 1959 während seiner Fotoreportagen auf der ganzen Welt aufnahm, finden sich viele Aufnahmen, in denen die Farbe ein erweitertes und dominierendes Element der Bildkomposition darstellt und die Rolle der Erzählung übernimmt. Meist war Hoepker mit zwei Leica-Kameras unterwegs; eine für Schwarz-Weiss, die andere für Farbe.
Die frühen Farbfotografien, welche sich oft den Regeln der Fotojournalismus entziehen, beschreiben in ihrer Vielzahl und künstlerischer Qualität eine eigenständige Sicht auf die Entwicklung der Welt und sind auf eine abstrakte Art korrespondierende Zeitzeugen. Sie fügen dem scheinbar unendlichen Bilder-Kanon der künstlerischen Fotografie neue und einmalige Aufnahmen hinzu. Das vielschichtige Werk des Fotografen Thomas Hoepker wird durch die erstmalige Präsentation der Bilder um eine neue Lesart ergänzt.

C'est de RIO - HONG KONG - NEW YORK - NEAPEL - PARIS que proviennent les nombreux clichés inédits et de jeunesse de Hoepker, présentés pour la première fois.
Plus d'une décennie avant que le terme New Color ne fasse son entrée dans l'histoire de la photographie, Thomas Hoepker photographiait déjà avec des films diapositives Kodachrome et Ektachrome en Asie du Sud-Est, en Afrique, en Amérique du Sud et dans de nombreux pays d'Europe. Une découverte absolue ! Dans les vastes ensembles de films diapositives inédits que Thomas Hoepker a réalisés à partir de 1959 lors de ses reportages photographiques dans le monde entier, on trouve de nombreux clichés dans lesquels la couleur constitue un élément élargi et dominant de la composition de l'image et joue le rôle de narration. La plupart du temps, Hoepker se déplaçait avec deux appareils photo Leica ; l'un pour le noir et blanc, l'autre pour la couleur.
Les premières photographies en couleur, qui échappent souvent aux règles du photojournalisme, décrivent par leur nombre et leur qualité artistique une vision originale de l'évolution du monde et sont, d'une manière abstraite, des témoins correspondants de l'époque. Vous ajoutez au canon visuel apparemment infini de la photographie artistique des prises de vue nouvelles et uniques. L'œuvre complexe du photographe Thomas Hoepker est complétée par une nouvelle lecture grâce à la première présentation des visuels.

Oltre un decennio prima che il termine New Color entrasse nella storia della fotografia, Thomas Hoepker fotografava già con pellicole diapositive Kodachrome ed Ektachrome nel Sud-Est asiatico, in Africa, in Sud America e in molti Paesi europei. Una scoperta assoluta! Nelle numerose pellicole di diapositive inedite che Thomas Hoepker ha scattato a partire dal 1959 durante i suoi reportage fotografici in tutto il mondo, ci sono molti scatti in cui il colore è un elemento esteso e dominante della composizione dell'immagine e assume il ruolo di narrazione. Per la maggior parte del tempo Hoepker viaggiava con due fotocamere Leica: una per il bianco e nero, l'altra per il colore.
Le prime fotografie a colori, che spesso sfidano le regole del fotogiornalismo, descrivono nella loro molteplicità e qualità artistica una visione indipendente dello sviluppo del mondo e corrispondono in modo astratto ai testimoni contemporanei. Aggiungono scatti nuovi e unici al canone apparentemente infinito delle immagini della fotografia artistica. Il lavoro multistrato del fotografo Thomas Hoepker è completato da una nuova lettura attraverso la presentazione delle immagini per la prima volta.

From RIO - HONG KONG - NEW YORK - NEAPEL - PARIS are the numerous unpublished and early photographs of Hoepker, which are now shown for the first time.
More than a decade before the term New Color entered the history of photography, Thomas Hoepker was already photographing with Kodachrome and Ektachrome slide films in Southeast Asia, Africa, South America and many countries in Europe. An absolute discovery! In the extensive convolutions of unpublished slide films, which Thomas Hoepker took up from 1959 on during his photo reportages all over the world, there are many shots in which color is an extended and dominating element of the image composition and takes over the role of narration. Most of the time Hoepker was traveling with two Leica cameras; one for black and white, the other for color.
The early color photographs, which often defy the rules of photojournalism, describe in their variety and artistic quality an independent view of the development of the world and are in an abstract way corresponding contemporary witnesses. They add new and unique shots to the seemingly endless visual canon of artistic photography. The multi-layered work of photographer Thomas Hoepker is complemented by a new reading through the presentation of the visuals for the first time.
