Bastiaan Woudt’s Werke entspringen der bewundernden wie auch eigenwilligen Perspektive des Fotografen auf die Mode- und Porträtfotografie des 20. Jahrhunderts. Während sein Respekt für die grossen Meister der Fotogeschichte spürbar ist, hat er doch einen unverwechselbaren, ganz und gar zeitgenössischen Stil entwickelt: monochrom, grafisch, mit reduzierter Tiefenschärfe bis hin zur vollständigen Zweidimensionalität.
Mit ihren anthrazitfarbenen Tönen und eleganten Kompositionen fühlen sich Bastiaan Woudts Bilder an, als würde man ein modernes Gemälde betreten, einen Raum voller Licht und Schatten. Ein Hauch von Surrealismus ist spürbar, da die formale Reduktion jedes Detail betont und uns einlädt, nur das Wesentliche zu sehen. Seine Arbeiten sind minimalistisch und bewegend und spielen zugleich mit der Schönheit des Unvollkommenen. Er nimmt Bezug auf die Fotografie der 1950er, 1960er und 1970er Jahre und erweitert sie zugleich mit den heutigen technischen Möglichkeiten. In einem zuvor festgelegten Raum, mit eigens für das Shooting hergestellten Requisiten und in enger Zusammenarbeit mit den Modellen, die ihn seit Jahren begleiten, beweist er seine einzigartige Sicht auf die menschliche Silhouette, das Gesicht und den Körper.
Bastiaan Woudt begann seine Reise in die Fotografie vor ca. 12 Jahren, indem er in Fotobücher eintauchte und mit modernen Techniken experimentierte. Er lernte von Meistern wie Irving Penn und Richard Avedon und entwickelte zugleich seinen eigenen künstlerischen Instinkt. Schon bald gewann Woudt internationale Preise und wurde in hochkarätigen Galerien ausgestellt. Seine Arbeiten wurden auf zahlreichen internationalen Messen ausgestellt, darunter Paris Photo, AIPAD New York, Art Miami, Photo London und Photo Shanghai. Sein Portfolio umfasst Arbeiten für Kunden wie Harper’s Bazaar, British Vogue, New York Magazine und Numéro Paris – um nur einige wenige zu nennen. 2022 widmete ihm das Museum Kranenburgh im holländischen Bergen die Einzelausstellung «Twist».

While his respect for the great masters of photographic history is evident, he has developed a distinctive, contemporary style: monochrome, graphic, with reduced depth of field to the point of complete two-dimensionality.
With their anthracite tones and elegant compositions, Bastiaan Woudt’s photographs feel like entering a modern painting, a room full of light and shadow. There is a hint of surrealism as the formal reduction emphasises every detail and invites us to see only what is essential. His works are minimalist and moving, while at the same time playing with the beauty of imperfection. He references the photography of the 1950s, 1960s and 1970s while expanding it with today’s technical possibilities. Over the years, his works increasingly show influences from sculpture and architecture.
