Das Bonnefantenmuseum in Maastricht präsentiert 40 Jahre nach dem Tod von Werner Mantz (*1901 in Köln - t 1983 in Maastricht) vom 25. September 2022 bis 26. Februar 2023 die erste Retrospektive des Topfotografens überhaupt. Mantz gilt weltweit als einer der bedeutendsten Architekturfotografen der Strömung des Neuen Bauens und seine Arbeiten wurden in zahlreichen Architekturzeitschriften veröffentlicht. Mit der Ausstellung The Perfect Eye zeigt das Bonnefantenmuseum überzeugend, warum das Werk von Mantz (auch) zum Kanon der niederländischen Fotografie gehört und präsentiert erstmals sein Gesamtwerk. Durch seine Bildsprache, die Verwendung von natürlichem Licht und sein fachliches Können nimmt er in der Geschichte der Fotografie eine einzigartige Position ein; Mantz hatte das perfekte Auge.
The Perfect Eye
Werner Mantz stellt in seinen Fotografien gerne das Alltägliche dar. Die Ausstellung The Perfect Eye im Bonnefantenmuseum führt mit ca. 300 Aufnahmen das Lebenswerk des Fotografen in einer Retrospektive zusammen und verbindet dabei drei Erzählstränge: Erstens sein freies Werk, zweitens seine Architekturfotografie und drittens seine Portraitfotografie. Außerdem werden Mantz' verschiedene (kunst-)historische Perioden aus Köln sowie aus Mittel- und Südlimburg in den Niederlanden miteinander verknüpft.
Eine große Quelle der Inspiration
Mantz gilt in der Entwicklung der Fotografie in den 20er Jahren des vorherigen Jahrhunderts als ein „missing link". Sein Werk ist die Verbindung zwischen der künstlerischen Avantgarde seiner Zeit und einer rein handwerklichen, funktionalen Fotografiepraxis - zu einer Zeit, in der die Geschichtsschreibung der Fotografie erst in Bewegung kam. Die künstlerischen Potenziale des Mediums wurden rückwirkend anerkannt, Werner Mantz wurde als Fotograf „neu entdeckt" und seine Architekturfotos wurden auf der Documenta 6 (1977) in Kassel ausgestellt.
Inzwischen ist klar, dass sich die Qualität von Mantz' Fotografie aus einer Kombination von drei verschiedenen Eigenschaften ergibt: Sein fachliches Können, sein Verständnis von alltäglichen Themen und sein großes kreatives Talent, in den vielfach eng begrenzten Rahmen eines Auftrags eine individuelle und kohärente Bildsprache zu entwickeln.
Le Bonnefantenmuseum de Maastricht présente, 40 ans après la mort de Werner Mantz (*1901 à Cologne - t 1983 à Maastricht), du 25 septembre 2022 au 26 février 2023, la toute première rétrospective de ce photographe de renom. Mantz est considéré dans le monde entier comme l'un des plus grands photographes d'architecture du courant du Neues Bauen et ses travaux ont été publiés dans de nombreuses revues d'architecture. Avec l'exposition The Perfect Eye, le Bonnefantenmuseum montre de manière convaincante pourquoi l'œuvre de Mantz fait (aussi) partie des canons de la photographie néerlandaise et présente pour la première fois l'ensemble de son œuvre. Son langage visuel, l'utilisation de la lumière naturelle et son savoir-faire professionnel lui confèrent une position unique dans l'histoire de la photographie ; Mantz avait l'œil parfait.
L'œil parfait
Dans ses photographies, Werner Mantz aime transmettre le quotidien. L'exposition The Perfect Eye au Bonnefantenmuseum réunit, avec quelque 300 clichés, l'œuvre de toute une vie du photographe dans une rétrospective qui combine trois fils narratifs : premièrement, son œuvre libre, deuxièmement, sa photographie d'architecture et troisièmement, sa photographie de portrait. En outre, les différentes périodes (artistiques) historiques de Mantz à Cologne et dans le Limbourg central et méridional aux Pays-Bas sont reliées entre elles.
Une grande source d'inspiration
Mantz est considéré comme un "lien" dans le développement de la photographie des années 1920. "chaînon manquant". Son œuvre est le lien entre l'avant-garde artistique de son époque et une pratique purement artisanale et fonctionnelle de la photographie - à une époque où l'historiographie de la photographie commençait seulement à bouger. Le potentiel artistique du médium a été rétroactivement reconnu, Werner Mantz a été "redécouvert" en tant que photographe et ses photos d'architecture ont été exposées à la Documenta 6 (1977) à Kassel.
Il est désormais clair que la qualité de la photographie de Mantz résulte d'une combinaison de trois caractéristiques différentes : Ses compétences professionnelles, sa compréhension des sujets quotidiens et son grand talent créatif pour développer un langage visuel individuel et cohérent dans le cadre souvent étroit d'une commande.
A 40 anni dalla morte di Werner Mantz (*1901 a Colonia - t 1983 a Maastricht), il Bonnefantenmuseum di Maastricht presenterà la prima retrospettiva in assoluto del fotografo di pentole dal 25 settembre 2022 al 26 febbraio 2023. Mantz è considerato in tutto il mondo uno dei più importanti fotografi di architettura del movimento New Building e il suo lavoro è stato pubblicato in numerose riviste di architettura. Con la mostra L'occhio perfetto, il Bonnefantenmuseum dimostra in modo convincente perché l'opera di Mantz appartiene (anche) al canone della fotografia olandese e presenta per la prima volta la sua opera completa. Grazie al suo linguaggio pittorico, all'uso della luce naturale e alla sua abilità tecnica, egli occupa una posizione unica nella storia della fotografia; Mantz aveva un occhio perfetto.
L'occhio perfetto
Werner Mantz ama ritrarre la quotidianità nelle sue fotografie. La mostra The Perfect Eye al Bonnefantenmuseum riunisce il lavoro di una vita del fotografo in una retrospettiva di circa 300 fotografie, collegando tre filoni narrativi: il primo, il suo lavoro indipendente, il secondo la fotografia di architettura e il terzo la fotografia di ritratto. Inoltre, i vari periodi storici (artistici) di Mantz di Colonia e del Limburgo centrale e meridionale nei Paesi Bassi sono collegati tra loro.
Una grande fonte di ispirazione
Mantz è considerato un "anello mancante" nello sviluppo della fotografia negli anni Venti. "anello mancante". Il suo lavoro è l'anello di congiunzione tra le avanguardie artistiche del suo tempo e una pratica fotografica puramente artigianale e funzionale, in un momento in cui la storiografia della fotografia stava appena iniziando a muoversi. From 25 September 2022 to 26 February 2023, the Bonnefanten in Maastricht is presenting the first retrospective ever by the illustrious photographer Werner Mantz (1901, Cologne-1983, Maastricht); 40 years after his death. Mantz is regarded worldwide as one ofthe most important architectural photographers ofthe Neues Bauen movement. But this isjust part of his multifaceted oeuvre. To date, his work has attracted great attention locally, regionally and internationally, but oddly enough not in the Netherlands, at least not outside Limburg. In The Perfect Eye, the Bonnefanten gives conclusive evidence for why Mantz's oeuvre also belongs in the canon of Dutch photography. He occupies a unique position in history, due to his visual idiom, use of natural lighting and craftsmanship - Mantz had the perfect eye.
The Perfect Eye
In his work and (working) life, the person and photographer Werner Mantz gives recognition to the commonplace. The compilation ofthe exhibition The Perfect Eye in the Bonnefanten brings everything together in a retrospective of around 300 (vintage) photos. Three narratives are thus permanently interwoven: his life and autonomous work, his architectural photography and his portrait photography. And at the same time, various historical and art-historical periods in Cologne, Central Limburg and South Limburg are linked together.
The missing link and a great source of inspiration
Mantz has been called the missing link in the evolution of photography in the 1920's. His work bridged the gap between the artistic avant-garde of his day and a purely artisanal, functional photography practice. lt was the period when the historiography of photography really took off. The artistic potential ofthe medium gained recognition retroactively, and Werner Mantz was 'rediscovered' as a photographer. His architectural photos then appeared at one ofthe most prestigious international art exhibitions: the Documenta of 1977, in Kassel.
Nowadays, it is clear that the quality of Mantz's photography is a combination ofthree characteristics: his craftsmanship, his understanding of the nature of his subjects and his great creative ability to develop a personal and coherent visual idiom within the often tight parameters of a commission. Furthermore, Mantz is a great source of inspiration to photographers today.
