On Rape – And Institutional Failure

In einer Assemblage aus eigenen und gefundenen Fotografien, Berichten, Zitaten, Videos und Artefakten widmet sich die katalanische Künstlerin Laia Abril (*1986) in ihrer umfassenden Recherchearbeit dem Thema der strukturell ermöglichten Vergewaltigung. Über verschiedene Zeithorizonte, Kulturpraktiken und Medien hinweg, zeichnet sie die Normalisierung misogyner Denk- und Handlungsweisen in Gesellschaft und Politik nach, ohne dabei auf explizite Darstellungen sexueller Gewalt zurückzugreifen. Im Fokus stehen vielmehr tradierte Vorstellungen, Gesetze und institutionalisiertes Versagen, die Machtdynamiken und Abhängigkeitsverhältnisse aufrechterhalten und somit Vergewaltigung ermöglichen. Es ist das zweite Kapitel ihres Langzeitprojekts A History of Misogyny, in dem Abril auf die vielfältigen Formen systemischer Gewalt gegen Frauen reagiert. Der bei dieser Thematik häufig empfundenen Sprachlosigkeit setzt sie eine bewegende wie politische Erzählung entgegen und appelliert sogleich an die gesamtgesellschaftliche Verantwortung.
C/O Berlin präsentiert die erste institutionelle Einzelausstellung der Künstlerin in Deutschland.
Dans un assemblage de photographies personnelles et trouvées, de rapports, de citations, de vidéos et d'artefacts, l'artiste catalane Laia Abril (*1986) consacre son vaste travail de recherche au thème du viol structurellement rendu possible. À travers différents horizons temporels, pratiques culturelles et médias, elle retrace la normalisation des modes de pensée et d'action misogynes dans la société et la politique, sans pour autant recourir à des représentations explicites de la violence sexuelle. Elle se concentre plutôt sur les représentations traditionnelles, les lois et les défaillances institutionnalisées qui perpétuent les dynamiques de pouvoir et les relations de dépendance et rendent ainsi le viol possible. Il s'agit du deuxième chapitre de son projet à long terme A History of Misogyny, dans lequel Abril réagit aux multiples formes de violence systémique envers les femmes. Elle oppose au mutisme souvent ressenti face à cette thématique un récit à la fois émouvant et politique et en appelle aussitôt à la responsabilité de la société dans son ensemble.
C/O Berlin présente la première exposition individuelle institutionnelle de l'artiste en Allemagne.
In un assemblaggio di fotografie proprie e ritrovate, relazioni, citazioni, video e manufatti, l'artista catalana Laia Abril (*1986) dedica il suo ampio lavoro di ricerca al tema dello stupro strutturalmente abilitato. Spaziando tra diversi orizzonti temporali, pratiche culturali e media, l'artista traccia la normalizzazione di modi di pensare e agire misogini nella società e nella politica, senza ricorrere a rappresentazioni esplicite della violenza sessuale. L'attenzione si concentra invece sulle idee tradizionali, sulle leggi e sui fallimenti istituzionalizzati che mantengono le dinamiche di potere e le relazioni di dipendenza, consentendo così lo stupro. È il secondo capitolo del suo progetto a lungo termine A History of Misogyny, in cui Abril reagisce alle varie forme di violenza sistemica contro le donne. L'artista contrasta l'assenza di parole che spesso si prova quando si affronta questo tema con una narrazione commovente e politica e fa immediatamente appello alla responsabilità della società nel suo complesso.
C/O Berlin presenta la prima mostra personale istituzionale dell'artista in Germania.
Catalan artist Laia Abril (b. 1986) dedicates her extensive research work to the topic of institutionally enabled rape using assemblages of found and original photographs, reports, quotations, videos, and artifacts. Working across time horizons, cultural practices, and media, she traces the normalization of misogynous ways of thinking and acting in society and politics without resorting to explicit depictions of sexual violence. Instead, the focus lies on the traditional ideas, laws, and institutionalized failures that maintain power dynamics and relationships of dependency that enable rape. The artist counters the speechlessness often felt around this topic with a moving and political narrative while simultaneously appealing to the responsibility of society as a whole. This is the second chapter of her long-term project, A History of Misogyny, in which Abril reacts to the various forms of systemic violence against women.
C/O Berlin presents the artist’s first institutional solo exhibition in Germany.
