Die Stiftung HCB stellt das neue Projekt des Fotografen Vasantha Yogananthan vor. Er ist der fünfte Preisträger von Immersion, einem französisch-amerikanischen Fotoauftrag der Fondation d'entreprise Hermès. Die in New Orleans entstandene Serie Mystery Street ist ein Zeugnis der überbordenden Fantasie von Kindern inmitten der heißen und feuchten Atmosphäre der Stadt im Hochsommer. Zwischen Dokumentarfotografie und Fiktion schlägt Vasantha Yogananthan eine Zwischenwelt vor, in der die Realität eine Vielfalt an möglichen Erzählungen bietet.
Es gibt einen Moment im Leben, am Übergang von der Kindheit zum Jugendalter - sagen wir zwischen 8 und 12 Jahren -, in dem sich alles sehr schnell verändert. Es ist das Alter der Vergänglichkeit. In einer seiner ersten Serien an einem Strand in der Camargue hatte sich Vasantha Yogananthan bereits für diese kurze und vorübergehende Zeit des Lebens interessiert. Im Rahmen von Immersion, einem Förderprogramm der Fondation d'entreprise Hermès, hat der Fotograf diese Erkundung in New Orleans wieder aufgenommen. Die noch sehr lebendige Erinnerung an den Hurrikan Katrina im Jahr 2005, die Lage der Stadt unterhalb des Meeresspiegels und die ständige Bedrohung durch die globale Erwärmung, dass das Wasser sie verschlingen könnte, machen sie zu einem Ort, an dem der Sinn für das Provisorische besonders ausgeprägt ist.
In Mystery Street wird das Kind so zu einer lebendigen Metapher für den Körper der Stadt.
Vasantha Yogananthan arbeitet mit der Materie des Realen. Er gehört zu jener Sorte von Fotografen, deren Kompass die Intuition ist. Als er mit diesem Projekt begann, hatte er keine vorgefassten Ideen. Für ihn ist der Akt der Fotografie eine Form des Lernens über die Welt. Seine Bilder sind keine Illustrationen dessen, was er bereits weiß, sondern Möglichkeiten für neue Erkenntnisse. Es ging ihm also keineswegs darum, eine philosophische, politische oder poetische Auffassung durch das Bild zu überprüfen. Vielmehr geht es darum, das Thema zu entdecken, während man es fotografiert. Die Entdeckung ist jedoch selten das Ergebnis einer Entscheidung. Sie manifestiert sich eher in Situationen des Experimentierens, des Spiels, des Glücks, der Instabilität oder des Wandels. Aus diesem Grund war die Vergänglichkeit, die New Orleans oder das Alter der Kinder mit sich bringen, besonders geeignet, um diese kleinen Momente der Epiphanie, die der Fotograf auf wunderbare Weise festhielt, zu vermehren.

La Fondation HCB présente le nouveau projet du photographe Vasantha Yogananthan, cinquième lauréat d'Immersion, une commande photographique franco-américaine de la Fondation d'entreprise Hermès. Réalisée à La Nouvelle‑Orléans, la série Mystery Street est le témoignage de l'imagination foisonnante d'enfants au coeur de l’atmosphère chaude et humide de la ville en plein été. Entre photographie documentaire et fiction, Vasantha Yogananthan propose un entre‑deux, où le réel offre une diversité de récits possibles.
Il y a un moment dans la vie, au passage de l’enfance à l’adolescence – disons entre 8 et 12 ans –, où tout change très vite. C’est l’âge de l’impermanence. Dans une de ses premières séries, sur une plage en Camargue, Vasantha Yogananthan s’était déjà intéressé à ce temps-là de l’existence, bref et transitoire. Dans le cadre d’Immersion, un dispositif de soutien à la création de la Fondation d’entreprise Hermès, le photographe a entrepris de reprendre cette exploration à La Nouvelle-Orléans. Le souvenir encore très à vif du passage de l’ouragan Katrina en 2005, la position de la ville en dessous du niveau de la mer et, avec le réchauffement climatique la menace permanente de voir les eaux l’engloutir, en font un lieu où le sens du provisoire se trouve particulièrement exacerbé.
Dans Mystery Street, l’enfant devient ainsi une métaphore vivante du corps de la ville.
Vasantha Yogananthan travaille avec la matière du réel. Il est de cette trempe de photographes dont l’intuition est la boussole. En commençant ce projet, il n’avait pas d’idées préconçues. Pour lui, l’acte photographique est une forme d’apprentissage du monde. Ses images ne sont pas des illustrations de ce qu’il sait déjà, mais des opportunités de nouveaux savoirs. Il ne s’agissait donc aucunement de vérifier par l’image une conception philosophique, politique ou poétique. Mais bien plutôt de découvrir son sujet tout en le photographiant. La découverte estcependant rarement le fruit d’une décision. Elle se manifeste plus volontiers dans des situations d’expérimentation, de jeu, de chance, d’instabilité ou de changement. C’est la raison pour laquelle l’impermanence offerte par La Nouvelle-Orléans, ou par l’âge des enfants, était particulièrement propice à la multiplication de ces petits moments d’épiphanie que le photographe a su magnifiquement saisir.

Il ricordo ancora vivo dell'uragano Katrina del 2005, la posizione della città sotto il livello del mare e, con il riscaldamento globale, la minaccia permanente delle acque che la inghiottono, ne fanno un luogo in cui il senso del temporaneo è particolarmente esacerbato.
In Mystery Street, il bambino diventa così una metafora vivente del corpo della città.
Vasantha Yogananthan lavora con la materia della realtà. È uno di quei fotografi la cui bussola è l'intuizione. Quando ha iniziato questo progetto, non aveva idee preconcette. Ecco perché l'impermanenza offerta da New Orleans, o dall'età dei bambini, è stata particolarmente favorevole al moltiplicarsi di questi piccoli momenti di epifania che il fotografo ha saputo catturare magnificamente.

The HCB Foundation presents the new project by photographer Vasantha Yogananthan, the fifth winner of Immersion, a Franco-American photographic commission from the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès. Produced in New Orleans, the Mystery Street series bears witness to the teeming imagination of children in the hot and humid atmosphere of the city in the middle of summer. Between documentary photography and fiction, Vasantha Yogananthan proposes an in-between, where reality offers a diversity of possible narratives.
There is a moment in life, at the passage from childhood to adolescence - let's say between 8 and 12 years old - when everything changes very quickly. It is the age of impermanence. In one of his first series, on a beach in the Camargue, Vasantha Yogananthan was already interested in this brief and transitory time of existence. In the context of Immersion, a creative support program of the Fondation d'entreprise Hermès, the photographer has undertaken to resume this exploration in New Orleans. The still vivid memory of Hurricane Katrina in 2005, the city's position below sea level and, with global warming, the permanent threat of the waters engulfing it, make it a place where the sense of the temporary is particularly exacerbated.
In Mystery Street, the child thus becomes a living metaphor for the body of the city.
Vasantha Yogananthan works with the material of reality. He is one of those photographers whose compass is intuition. When he started this project, he had no preconceived ideas. For him, the photographic act is a form of learning about the world. His images are not illustrations of what he already knows, but opportunities for new knowledge. It was therefore not at all a question of verifying a philosophical, political or poetic conception through the image. But rather to discover his subject while photographing it. However, the discovery is rarely the result of a decision. It is more likely to occur in situations of experimentation, play, chance, instability or change. This is why the impermanence offered by New Orleans, or by the age of the children, was particularly conducive to the multiplication of these small moments of epiphany that the photographer was able to capture magnificently.
