Das Museum der Moderne Salzburg präsentiert die erste umfassende Werkschau der britischen Künstlerin Rose English im deutschsprachigen Raum. Inmitten der Konzeptkunst, der Tanzszene und der feministischen Szene entwickelt English (geb. 1950 Hereford, GB) in den 1970er-Jahren in Großbritannien ihre einzigartige Arbeitsweise. Heute zählt sie zu den einflussreichsten Performance-Künstlerinnen. In ihrem außergewöhnlichen interdisziplinären Werk verbindet sie Elemente von Theater, Zirkus und Oper, um die Themen Geschlechterpolitik und die Präsenz von Performer:innen zu erforschen.
Die Ausstellung gibt anhand von multimedialen Installationen einen Einblick in ihre einzigartige Praxis. Aus ihrer frühen Beschäftigung mit Ballett und Dressur und ihren gemeinsamen Wurzeln im Barock entwickelt die Künstlerin ihre berühmte feministische Tanzperformance Quadrille (1975) und ihre Bühnenperformance mit einem Pferd My Mathematics (1992). Drei ihrer großen Theaterproduktionen werden in Form einer neuen ortsspezifischen Installation zum ersten Mal öffentlich gezeigt.
Ein in Auftrag gegebenes Performance-Programm begleitet die Ausstellung mit vier Performances von jüngeren internationalen Künstler:innen, deren Arbeiten mit der künstlerischen Praxis von Englisch in Verbindung stehen.
Zur Ausstellung erscheint eine zweisprachige Publikation.

Le Museum der Moderne Salzburg présente la première exposition complète de l'œuvre de l'artiste britannique Rose English dans l'espace germanophone. Au milieu de l'art conceptuel, de la scène de la danse et de la scène féministe, English (née en 1950 à Hereford, Royaume-Uni) développe sa méthode de travail unique dans les années 1970 en Grande-Bretagne. Aujourd'hui, elle compte parmi les artistes de performance les plus influents. Dans son œuvre interdisciplinaire exceptionnelle, elle combine des éléments de théâtre, de cirque et d'opéra pour explorer les thèmes de la politique de genre et de la présence des performeurs/performeuses.
L'exposition donne un aperçu de sa pratique unique à travers des installations multimédias. De son intérêt précoce pour le ballet et le dressage et de leurs racines communes dans le baroque, l'artiste développe son célèbre spectacle de danse féministe Quadrille (1975) et sa performance scénique avec un cheval My Mathematics (1992). Trois de ses grandes productions théâtrales sont présentées pour la première fois au public sous la forme d'une nouvelle installation spécifique au lieu.
Un programme de performances commandé accompagne l'exposition avec quatre performances de jeunes artistes internationaux dont le travail est lié à la pratique artistique de l'anglais.
Une publication bilingue est éditée à l'occasion de l'exposition.

Nel mezzo dell'arte concettuale, della scena della danza e della scena femminista, la English (nata nel 1950 a Hereford, Regno Unito) ha sviluppato il suo modo unico di lavorare in Gran Bretagna negli anni Settanta. Oggi è una delle più influenti artiste performative. Nel suo straordinario lavoro interdisciplinare, combina elementi di teatro, circo e opera per esplorare i temi della politica di genere e della presenza dei performer.
La mostra offre una panoramica della sua pratica unica attraverso installazioni multimediali. Dal suo primo coinvolgimento con il balletto e il dressage e le loro radici comuni nel Barocco, l'artista ha sviluppato la sua famosa performance di danza femminista Quadrille (1975) e la sua performance teatrale con un cavallo My Mathematics (1992). Tre delle sue principali produzioni teatrali saranno presentate per la prima volta al pubblico sotto forma di una nuova installazione site-specific.

The Museum der Moderne Salzburg is presenting the first comprehensive exhibition of works by British artist Rose English in the German-speaking world. In the midst of conceptual art, the dance scene and the feminist scene, English (born 1950 in Hereford, UK) developed her unique way of working in Great Britain in the 1970s. Today she is one of the most influential performance artists. In her extraordinary interdisciplinary work, she combines elements of theater, circus and opera to explore the themes of gender politics and the presence of performers.
The exhibition provides an insight into her unique practice through multimedia installations. From her early involvement with ballet and dressage and their common roots in the Baroque, the artist developed her famous feminist dance performance Quadrille (1975) and her stage performance with a horse My Mathematics (1992). Three of her major theater productions will be shown publicly for the first time in the form of a new site-specific installation.
A commissioned performance program accompanies the exhibition with four performances by younger international artists whose work is related to the artistic practice of English.
A bilingual publication will accompany the exhibition.
