Anlässlich des 40. Jubiläums von Richard Avedons ikonischem Werk In the American West präsentiert die Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson in Zusammenarbeit mit der Richard Avedon Foundation eine außergewöhnliche Ausstellung, die ganz dieser emblematischen Serie gewidmet ist.
Zwischen 1979 und 1984 reiste Richard Avedon im Auftrag des Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas, durch den amerikanischen Westen und fotografierte mehr als 1.000 seiner Bewohner. Fünf Jahre lang ließ Avedon Bergarbeiter, Viehtreiber, Schausteller, Verkäufer, Passanten und andere Menschen mit einer reichen Geschichte allein oder in kleinen Gruppen vor der Linse seiner Fotokamera vorbeiziehen, vor einem weißen Hintergrund, der ihre Gesichtszüge, Körperhaltungen und Ausdrücke sublimierte. Auf diese Weise zeichnet er ein eindringliches Porträt dieser Region und ihrer Bewohner, das den traditionellen Darstellungen und Verherrlichungen des Mythos des amerikanischen Westens entgegengesetzt ist. Die große Kraft der 103 Werke, die die finale Serie und das gleichnamige Buch bilden, machen In the American West zu einem Wendepunkt in Avedons Werk und zu einem wichtigen Meilenstein in der Geschichte der Porträtfotografie.
Die Ausstellung der Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson vom 30. April bis zum 12. Oktober 2025 zeigt zum allerersten Mal in Europa alle Bilder, die im Originalwerk enthalten sind. Die Stiftung lädt das Publikum ein, das Ensemble zu entdecken, aber auch die Etappen seiner Produktion und Rezeption zu verfolgen. Sie zeigt eine vollständige Auswahl der Abzüge der Graveure, die als Referenz für die Ausstellung und für den Druck des Originalbuchs von 1985 dienten, neben bisher unveröffentlichten Dokumenten: vorbereitende Polaroids, Testabzüge mit Anmerkungen von der Hand des Fotografen, Briefwechsel zwischen dem Künstler und seinen Modellen.
Anlässlich des Jubiläums bringt Abrams, der Herausgeber des Originalwerks, das lange vergriffene Buch neu heraus.

À l’occasion du 40e anniversaire de l’ouvrage iconique de Richard Avedon, In the American West, la Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson présente, en collaboration avec la Richard Avedon Foundation, une exposition exceptionnelle entièrement dédiée à cette série emblématique.
Entre 1979 et 1984, à la demande de l’Amon Carter Museum of American Art de Fort Worth au Texas, Richard Avedon sillonne l’Ouest américain et photographie plus de 1,000 de ses habitants. Pendant cinq années, Avedon fait défiler, devant l’objectif de sa chambre photographique, mineurs, bouviers, forains, vendeurs et passants, parmi d’autres personnes à l’histoire riche, seuls ou en petits groupes, sur un fond blanc qui sublime leurs traits, leurs postures et leurs expressions. Il dresse ainsi un portrait saisissant de cette région et de ses résidents, à rebours des représentations traditionnelles et glorifications du mythe de l’Ouest américain. La grande force des 103 oeuvres qui composent la série finale et l’ouvrage du même nom font d’In the American West un moment charnière dans l’oeuvre d’Avedon et un jalon majeur dans l’histoire du portrait photographique.
L’exposition de la Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson du 30 avril au 12 octobre 2025 présente pour la toute première fois en Europe l’intégralité des images qui figurent dans l’ouvrage original. Invitant le public à découvrir l’ensemble mais aussi à suivre des étapes de sa production et de sa réception, la Fondation présente une sélection complète des tirages des graveurs ayant servi de référence pour l’exposition et pour l’impression du livre original de 1985 aux côtés de documents inédits : polaroids préparatoires, tirages tests annotés de la main du photographe, échanges épistolaires entre l’artiste et ses modèles.
À l’occasion de cet anniversaire, Abrams, éditeur de l’ouvrage original, réédite le livre depuis longtemps épuisé.

Tra il 1979 e il 1984, su richiesta dell'Amon Carter Museum of American Art di Fort Worth, Texas, Richard Avedon ha attraversato l'Ovest americano, fotografando più di 1.000 abitanti. Nell'arco di cinque anni, Avedon ha portato davanti all'obiettivo del suo banco ottico minatori, mandriani, uomini di spettacolo, venditori e passanti, insieme ad altre persone dalla storia ricca, da soli o in piccoli gruppi, su uno sfondo bianco che ne sublimava i tratti, le posture e le espressioni. La mostra alla Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson dal 30 aprile al 12 ottobre 2025 presenta, per la prima volta in Europa, tutte le immagini contenute nel libro originale. Invitando il pubblico a scoprire l'opera nel suo complesso, ma anche a seguire le fasi della sua produzione e ricezione, la Fondazione presenta una selezione completa delle stampe degli incisori che sono servite da riferimento per la mostra e per la stampa del libro originale del 1985, insieme a documenti inediti: polaroid preparatorie, stampe di prova annotate a mano dal fotografo e scambi epistolari tra l'artista e le sue modelle.
In occasione di questo anniversario, Abrams, editore dell'opera originale, ripubblica il libro, da tempo fuori catalogo.

To mark the 40th anniversary of Richard Avedon's iconic work, In the American West, the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson, in collaboration with the Richard Avedon Foundation, is presenting an exceptional exhibition entirely dedicated to this emblematic series.
Between 1979 and 1984, at the request of the Amon Carter Museum of American Art in Fort Worth, Texas, Richard Avedon travelled across the American West and photographed more than 1,000 of its inhabitants. For five years, Avedon photographed miners, cowboys, fairground workers, salesmen and passers-by, among other people with a rich history, alone or in small groups, in front of the lens of his camera, against a white background that emphasises their features, postures and expressions. He thus paints a striking portrait of this region and its residents, in contrast to the traditional representations and glorifications of the myth of the American West. The great strength of the 103 works that make up the final series and the book of the same name make In the American West a pivotal moment in Avedon's work and a major milestone in the history of photographic portraiture.
The exhibition at the Fondation Henri Cartier-Bresson from 30 April to 12 October 2025 presents for the very first time in Europe all the images that appear in the original book. Inviting the public to discover the whole collection but also to follow the stages of its production and reception, the Foundation presents a complete selection of the prints by the engravers that served as a reference for the exhibition and for the printing of the original 1985 book alongside previously unpublished documents: preparatory Polaroids, test prints annotated by the photographer's hand, exchanges of letters between the artist and his models.
To mark this anniversary, Abrams, the publisher of the original work, is reissuing the book, which has been out of print for a long time.
