Durch das Smartphone ist Fotografie heute zu einem schnelllebigen und flüchtigen Medium geworden. Fotos tauchen auf Instagram und Facebook in Stories kurz auf und verschwinden wieder. Wo früher mit der Analogkamera ein Sujet mit Bedacht eingefangen wurde, kann heute über die Handykamera wahllos geknipst werden. Das mag einerseits bedauerlich sein, andererseits hat die Fotografie in den letzten Jahren wieder an Bedeutung gewonnen. Plötzlich interessieren sich vor allem auch wieder jüngere Menschen für die analoge Fotografie. Sie realisieren, dass das Handyfoto nur ein Anfang ist und sich hinter dieser Technologie eine ganze andere, faszinierende Welt verbergen kann.
In diese einzigartige Welt lässt uns Kim Jungman mit seinen Fotografien eintauchen. Der koreanische Künstler und Fotograf verstarb am 31. Dezember 2022 im Alter von 68 Jahren überraschend und mitten in der Vorbereitung dieser Ausstellung. Zuvor hatten er und sein Sohn Neo Kim Basel und die Stiftung besucht und die Präsentation in ersten Umrissen besprochen. Es war der Wunsch der Familie von Kim Jungman, das Projekt auch nach dessen Tod zu realisieren. So wird die Ausstellung nun zu einer Hommage an diesen aussergewöhnlichen Menschen und Fotografen.
Grâce au smartphone, la photographie est aujourd'hui devenue un média éphémère qui évolue rapidement. Les photos apparaissent et disparaissent brièvement dans les stories sur Instagram et Facebook. Alors qu'autrefois, un sujet était capturé avec soin à l'aide d'un appareil photo analogique, il est aujourd'hui possible de prendre des photos au hasard avec l'appareil photo d'un téléphone portable. D'un côté, cela peut être regrettable, mais d'un autre côté, la photographie a repris de l'importance ces dernières années. Soudain, les jeunes s'intéressent à nouveau à la photographie analogique. Ils réalisent que la photo prise avec un téléphone portable n'est qu'un début et que derrière cette technologie peut se cacher tout un autre monde fascinant.
C'est dans ce monde unique que Kim Jungman nous fait plonger avec ses photographies. L'artiste et photographe coréen est décédé subitement le 31 décembre 2022 à l'âge de 68 ans, en pleine préparation de cette exposition. Auparavant, lui et son fils Neo Kim s'étaient rendus à Bâle et à la fondation pour discuter des premiers contours de la présentation. C'était le souhait de la famille de Kim Jungman de continuer à réaliser le projet après sa mort. Ainsi, l'exposition devient maintenant un hommage à cet homme et à ce photographe hors du commun.
Grazie allo smartphone, la fotografia è diventata un mezzo veloce e fugace. Le foto appaiono brevemente nelle storie di Instagram e Facebook e poi scompaiono di nuovo. Laddove un soggetto veniva catturato con attenzione con una macchina fotografica analogica, oggi può essere scattato indiscriminatamente con la fotocamera di un cellulare. Da un lato questo può essere deplorevole, ma dall'altro negli ultimi anni la fotografia ha riacquistato importanza. Improvvisamente, soprattutto i più giovani sono tornati a interessarsi alla fotografia analogica. Si rendono conto che la foto con il cellulare è solo l'inizio e che dietro questa tecnologia c'è tutto un altro mondo affascinante.
Kim Jungman ci immerge in questo mondo unico con le sue fotografie. L'artista e fotografo coreano è morto inaspettatamente il 31 dicembre 2022 all'età di 68 anni, nel bel mezzo della preparazione di questa mostra. Insieme al figlio Neo Kim aveva visitato in precedenza Basilea e la fondazione e discusso le prime linee della presentazione. La famiglia di Kim Jungman desiderava realizzare il progetto anche dopo la sua morte. La mostra è ora un omaggio a questo straordinario uomo e fotografo.
The smartphone has made photography a fast-moving and rather fleeting medium. Pictures pop up briefly on Instagram and Facebook Stories and disappear again. A subject used to be carefully captured with an analogue camera at the time, unlike today, where phones take snapshots indiscriminately, everywhere and at all times. On one hand, this may be regrettable, but on the other hand, photography as such has in fact gained more importance in recent years. Suddenly, many people, especially younger ones, are taking an interest in analogue photography again. They recognise that a mobile phone photo is merely a beginning and that a whole other, fascinating world can be discovered behind this technology.
Kim Jungman allows us a view into a unique world with his photography. The Korean artist and photographer died unexpectedly on the 31st of December 2022 at the age of 68, while preparing this exhibition. Beforehand, his son Neo Kim and him had visited Basel and our Foundation, in order to discuss the presentation in its first outlines. It was the wish of Kim Jungman’s family to go ahead with the project after his death. Thus, the exhibition has now become a tribute to this extraordinary person and photographer.
