Emmanuel Van der Auweras künstlerisches Werk problematisiert das Selbstverständnis dokumentarischer Bilder, die auf eine Produktion von Fakten und Wahrheit abzielen. Seine Fotografien, Drucke und Videoinstallationen verwenden polarisierendes, im digitalen Raum zirkulierendes Bildmaterial und fragen nach der ethischen Verantwortung im Umgang mit Gewaltbildern und kollektiven Traumata. Mit Blick auf die jüngsten Schul-Amokläufe in den USA erhalten die in der Ausstellung ausgestellten Arbeiten erschreckende Aktualität. Sie können als Plädoyer für einen kritischen Umgang mit mediatisierten Gewaltdarstellungen gelesen werden. Gleichzeitig bilden sie einen faszinierenden Einblick in das erbarmungslose Kaleidoskop digitaler Bilder, die uns tagtäglich zur Positionierung herausfordert: Welche Bilder erreichen uns durch die mediale Bilderflut? Wo verläuft die Grenze zum Voyeurismus? Welchen Abbildungen schenken wir Vertrauen und warum gehen sie viral?
Les œuvres d’Emmanuel Van der Auwera remettent en question la nature évidente des images documentaires trouvées qui visent à produire des faits et la vérité. Ses photographies, films et installations vidéo utilisent du matériel visuel polarisant circulant dans des espaces numériques, abordant la responsabilité éthique dans le traitement des images de violence et de traumatisme collectif. Au regard des récentes fusillades dans les écoles aux États-Unis, les œuvres exposées sont d’une actualité effrayante. Elles peuvent être lues comme un plaidoyer pour une approche critique des représentations médiatisées de la violence. Dans le même temps, elles offrent un aperçu fascinant du kaléidoscope impitoyable du flux d’images numériques en remettant en question notre culture visuelle : comment les images des médias de masse contemporains agissent-elles sur les différents publics et dans quel but ? Où se situe la limite du voyeurisme ? À quelles images faisons-nous confiance et pourquoi deviennent-elles virales ?
Il lavoro artistico di Emmanuel Van der Auwera problematizza l'autocomprensione delle immagini documentarie che mirano a produrre fatti e verità. Le sue fotografie, stampe e installazioni video utilizzano materiali visivi polarizzanti che circolano nello spazio digitale e si interrogano sulla responsabilità etica di trattare immagini di violenza e traumi collettivi. Alla luce delle recenti stragi scolastiche negli Stati Uniti, le opere esposte nella mostra sono spaventosamente attuali. Possono essere letti come un appello per un approccio critico alle rappresentazioni mediatizzate della violenza. Allo stesso tempo, offrono un'affascinante visione dell'impietoso caleidoscopio di immagini digitali che ci sfidano a posizionarci ogni giorno: Quali immagini ci raggiungono attraverso il diluvio di immagini dei media? Dove passa il confine del voyeurismo? Di quali immagini ci fidiamo e perché diventano virali?
Emmanuel Van der Auwera’s works challenge the self-evident nature of found documentary images that aim to produce facts and truth. His photographs, films and video installations use polarising visual material circulating in digital spaces, addressing the ethical responsibility in dealing with images of violence and collective trauma. In regard to the recent school mass shootings in the USA, the works on display are frighteningly topical. They can be read as a plea for a critical approach to mediatised depictions of violence. At the same time, they provide a fascinating insight into the merciless kaleidoscope of the digital image flux by questioning our visual literacy: How do images of contemporary mass media operate on various publics and to what end? Where is the borderline to voyeurism? Which images do we trust and why do they go viral?
