Die Galerie Bene Taschen freut sich, die neue Einzelausstellung Flesh Life: Sex in Mexico City von Joseph Rodriguez zu präsentieren. In Flesh Life dokumentiert Rodriguez das Leben in Mexico City im Jahr 1997, u.a. im Bezirk La Merced, der zu den Vierteln mit der höchsten Kriminalitätsrate der Stadt gehört.
Die schwarz-weißen Arbeiten zeigen Bewohner, die einerseits mit dem katholischen Glauben tief verwurzelt sind, sich andererseits häufig auf die Suche nach sexuellen Abenteuern begeben. Auf den ausgestellten Silver gelatin Prints sind Familien, Sexarbeiter_innen und trans*Sexarbeiter_innen in gegensätzlichen Szenen porträtiert. Eine Sexarbeiterin, die sich für ihren nächsten Job bereit macht und dazu ihr Aussehen markant verändert. Im Hintergrund hängt ein Kruzifix an der Wand. Die Verschmelzung zwischen dem Ausleben von erotischen Wünschen und der Hingabe zu Spiritualität ist in Mexico City allgegenwärtig. Rodriguez taucht in verborgene Winkel dieser Metropole ein und hält intime Momente fest, die trotz der oft schwierigen Lebensumstände nie an Würde und Schönheit verlieren.
Er selbst beschreibt sich als Humanist. Durch seine achtsame und respektvolle Haltung gegenüber den Menschen und Orten, die er fotografiert, gelingt ihm ein Blick hinter die Fassaden der Personen. Die Porträtierten vertrauen ihm und gewähren ihm einen Einblick in ihr Leben, fernab der in der Öffentlichkeit stattfindenden Geschehnisse. In Flesh Life werden die tiefen menschlichen Grundbedürfnisse nach Liebe, Solidarität und Nähe, die hinter den Momentaufnahmen liegen, sichtbar.
Geboren in New York City, schloss Joseph Rodriguez 1985 ein Studium am International Center of Photography in New York mit einem Diplom für Fotografie ab. Seit vier Jahrzehnten arbeitet er als Dokumentar-Fotograf und hat für verschiedene Publikationen wie der New York Times und Washington Post gearbeitet. Rodriguez Arbeiten wurden in zehn Monografien herausgebracht und sind in Sammlungen wie LACMA, Los Angeles, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C., ALBERTINA, Wien und Museum Ludwig in Köln vertreten.
Die Ausstellung Flesh Life zeigt eine Auswahl der Fotografien aus dem gleichnamigen Buch, das 2006 veröffentlicht wurde.
La galerie Bene Taschen a le plaisir de présenter la nouvelle exposition individuelle Flesh Life : Sex in Mexico City de Joseph Rodriguez. Dans Flesh Life, Rodriguez documente la vie à Mexico City en 1997, entre autres dans le quartier de La Merced, l'un des quartiers de la ville où le taux de criminalité est le plus élevé.
Les travaux en noir et blanc montrent des habitants qui, d'une part, sont profondément enracinés dans la foi catholique et qui, d'autre part, sont souvent en quête d'aventures sexuelles. Sur les Silver gelatin prints exposés, des familles, des travailleurs du sexe et des travailleurs du sexe trans* sont portraiturés dans des scènes opposées. Une travailleuse du sexe se prépare pour son prochain travail et change pour cela de manière marquante son apparence. En arrière-plan, un crucifix est accroché au mur. La fusion entre la réalisation de désirs érotiques et la dévotion à la spiritualité est omniprésente à Mexico City. Rodriguez plonge dans des recoins cachés de cette métropole et immortalise des moments intimes qui, malgré des conditions de vie souvent difficiles, ne perdent jamais leur dignité et leur beauté.
Il se décrit lui-même comme un humaniste. Grâce à son attitude attentive et respectueuse envers les personnes et les lieux qu'il photographie, il parvient à voir derrière les façades des personnes. Les personnes dont il fait le portrait lui font confiance et lui laissent entrevoir leur vie, loin des événements qui se déroulent en public. Dans Flesh Life, les profonds besoins humains fondamentaux d'amour, de solidarité et de proximité qui se cachent derrière les instantanés deviennent visibles.
Né à New York City, Joseph Rodriguez a obtenu en 1985 un diplôme de photographie à l'International Center of Photography de New York. Il travaille depuis quatre décennies en tant que photographe documentaire et a collaboré à diverses publications telles que le New York Times et le Washington Post. Les travaux de Rodriguez ont été publiés dans dix monographies et sont représentés dans des collections telles que LACMA, Los Angeles, Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C., ALBERTINA, Vienne et Museum Ludwig à Cologne.

Le opere in bianco e nero mostrano residenti che, da un lato, sono profondamente radicati nella fede cattolica e, dall'altro, vanno spesso alla ricerca di avventure sessuali. Le stampe alla gelatina d'argento in mostra ritraggono famiglie, lavoratrici del sesso e trans* in scene contrastanti. Una lavoratrice del sesso si prepara per il suo prossimo lavoro e cambia notevolmente il suo aspetto. Un crocifisso è appeso alla parete sullo sfondo. La fusione tra i desideri erotici e la devozione alla spiritualità è onnipresente a Città del Messico. Rodriguez si addentra in angoli nascosti di questa metropoli e cattura momenti intimi che non perdono mai la loro dignità e bellezza nonostante le circostanze spesso difficili della vita.
Si definisce un umanista. Grazie al suo atteggiamento attento e rispettoso nei confronti delle persone e dei luoghi che fotografa, riesce a guardare dietro la facciata delle persone. Le persone ritratte si fidano di lui e gli permettono di dare uno sguardo alla loro vita, lontano dagli eventi che si svolgono sotto gli occhi di tutti. In Flesh Life, i profondi bisogni umani di amore, solidarietà e vicinanza che si celano dietro le istantanee diventano visibili.
Nato a New York, Joseph Rodriguez si è laureato in fotografia all'International Center of Photography di New York nel 1985. Bene Taschen Gallery is pleased to present Flesh Life: Sex in Mexico City, a new solo exhibition by Joseph Rodriguez. In Flesh Life, Rodriguez documents life in Mexico City in 1997, including the La Merced district, which is one of the highest crime neighborhoods in the city.
The black-and-white works depict residents who, on the one hand, are deeply rooted in the Catholic faith, but on the other hand, often go in search of sexual adventures. The Silver gelatin prints on display feature portraits of families, sex workers, and trans* sex workers in contrasting scenes. A sex worker getting ready for her next job, strikingly changing her appearance to do so. A crucifix hangs on the wall in the background. The fusion between acting out erotic desires and devotion to spirituality is ubiquitous in Mexico City. Rodriguez delves into hidden corners of this metropolis and captures intimate moments that never lose their dignity and beauty despite the often difficult circumstances of life.
He describes himself as a humanist. Through his attentive and respectful attitude towards the people and places he photographs, he manages to look behind the facades of the people. The portrayed trust him and allow him a glimpse into their lives, far away from the events taking place in the public eye. In Flesh Life, the deep basic human needs for love, solidarity and closeness that lie behind the snapshots become visible.
Born in New York City, Joseph Rodriguez graduated from the International Center of Photography in New York with a degree in photography in 1985. He has worked as a documentary photographer for four decades and has contributed to various publications including the New York Times and Washington Post. Rodriguez's work has been published in ten monographs and is included in collections such as LACMA, Los Angeles; Smithsonian American Art Museum, Washington D.C.; ALBERTINA, Vienna; and Museum Ludwig in Cologne, Germany.
