«Every day you play...», der Titel des Gedichts von Pablo Neruda, inspirierte die erste Einzelausstellung des Künstlerduos Albarrán Cabrera in den Niederlanden. Die erste Zeile dieses Gedichts «Every day you play with the light of the universe» beschreibt, wie es sich anfühlt, ein Fotograf zu sein.
Sehen zu lernen ist eine nie endende Aufgabe. Die Möglichkeit, ein Werkzeug zu haben, um die Realität zu erforschen, ist es, was Anna Cabrera und Angel Albarrán zum fotografischen Medium hinzog. Sie entdeckten, dass sie mit Hilfe der Fotografie nicht nur die wahrgenommene Realität, sondern auch das "Warum der Dinge" besser verstehen konnten.
Albarrán Cabrera sagen, dass "Fotografien den Betrachtenden unbewusste Assoziationen auslösen, die auf deren persönlichen Erinnerungen beruhen. Wir ziehen es vor, wenn die Betrachtenden die Bilder anders interpretieren, als wir es uns ursprünglich vorgestellt haben. Wenn wir also vertraute Orte abbilden, laden wir dazu ein, diese mit "neuen" Augen zu sehen. So, als ob diese Orte zum ersten Mal gesehen würden – in der Schwebe zwischen Vergangenheit und Zukunft."
Dies hat Albarrán Cabrera dazu veranlasst, sich nicht nur auf die Bilder selbst zu konzentrieren, sondern auch auf deren physische Manifestation als gedruckte Fotografien. In ihrem Atelier arbeiten sie mit klassischen Druckverfahren wie Platin, Silberhalogenid oder Cyanotypie-Emulsion oder erfinden neue Verfahren wie Pigmentdrucke auf Blattgold, um ihre einzigartigen Kunstwerke zu schaffen. Die Poesie und Sinnlichkeit ihrer Abzüge zeugen von einem unvergleichlichen handwerklichen Können und verleihen ihnen eine Komplexität, die weit über ein einfaches Bild hinausgeht.

Apprendre à voir est une tâche sans fin. La possibilité d'avoir un outil pour explorer la réalité est ce qui a attiré Anna Cabrera et Angel Albarrán vers le médium photographique. Ils ont découvert que la photographie leur permettait de mieux comprendre non seulement la réalité perçue, mais aussi le "pourquoi des choses".
Albarrán Cabrera disent que "les photographies déclenchent chez les observateurs des associations inconscientes basées sur leurs souvenirs personnels. Nous préférons que les personnes qui regardent les images les interprètent différemment de ce que nous avions imaginé au départ. Ainsi, lorsque nous représentons des lieux familiers, nous invitons à les voir avec un "nouveau" regard. Comme si ces lieux étaient vus pour la première fois - en suspens entre passé et futur".
Cela a incité Albarrán Cabrera à se concentrer non seulement sur les images elles-mêmes, mais aussi sur leur manifestation physique sous forme de photographies imprimées. Dans leur atelier, ils travaillent avec des procédés d'impression classiques comme le platine, l'halogénure d'argent ou l'émulsion cyanotype, ou inventent de nouveaux procédés comme l'impression pigmentaire sur feuille d'or pour créer leurs œuvres d'art uniques. La poésie et la sensualité de leurs tirages témoignent d'un savoir-faire artisanal incomparable et leur confèrent une complexité qui va bien au-delà d'une simple image.

Imparare a vedere è un compito senza fine. La possibilità di avere uno strumento per esplorare la realtà è ciò che ha attirato Anna Cabrera e Angel Albarrán al mezzo fotografico. Hanno scoperto che la fotografia permetteva loro di capire meglio non solo la realtà percepita ma anche il "perché delle cose".
Albarrán Cabrera dice che "le fotografie innescano associazioni inconsce negli spettatori basate sui loro ricordi personali. Preferiamo che lo spettatore interpreti le immagini in modo diverso da come le avevamo immaginate. Così, quando rappresentiamo luoghi familiari, li invitiamo a vederli con occhi "nuovi". Come se questi luoghi fossero visti per la prima volta - nel limbo tra passato e futuro".
Questo ha portato Albarrán Cabrera a concentrarsi non solo sulle immagini stesse, ma anche sulla loro manifestazione fisica come fotografie stampate. Nel loro studio, lavorano con processi di stampa classici come il platino, l'alogenuro d'argento o l'emulsione cianotipia, o inventano nuovi processi come la stampa a pigmenti su foglia d'oro per creare le loro opere uniche. La poesia e la sensualità delle loro stampe testimoniano una maestria incomparabile e danno loro una complessità che va ben oltre una semplice immagine.
"Every day you play..." is the title of a poem by Pablo Neruda which has inspired the first solo exhibition in the Netherlands of the artist duo Albarrán Cabrera. The opening line of this poem "Every day you play with the light of the universe" describes what it feels like to be a photographer.
Learning to see is a never-ending task. The possibility of having a tool to investigate reality is what drew Cabrera and Albarrán to the photographic medium. They discovered that by using photography they can have a better understanding not only of the perceived reality, but also of ‘the why of things’. They found it to be the perfect philosophical tool to learn more about the universe as a logical and architectural conception.
As photographers, Albarrán and Cabrera can explain complex subject matters without using a verbal language and its linguistic code. Instead, they use photographs to help the viewers understand challenging concepts in a different way. They show not the landscape that is directly perceived, but the one that is supposed to be latent: the landscape of memory and fairytale, the landscape of hidden figures and wonders.
Albarrán and Cabrera intend that “photographs trigger subconscious associations in the viewer based on their memories. We prefer that the viewer interprets the photograph in a way different than we have originally imagined. Thus, depicting familiar places we ask the viewer to see them through “new” eyes as if these places were seen for the first time, when everything is suspended between past and future.”
This has led Albarrán Cabrera to focus not only on the images themselves, but also on their physical manifestation as printed photographs. “We devote a lot of time and effort to creating a printed representation of our ideas as we believe photographs are visual but also physical objects”. In their studio they work using classic printing methods, such as platinum, silver halide, cyanotype emulsion or invent new ones, such as pigment prints on gold leaf, creating unique works of art. The poetry and sensuality of their prints reveal an unrivalled craftsmanship and invest them with a complexity that goes far beyond a straightforward image.
