CAMERA präsentiert vom 25. Februar bis zum 4. Juni 2023 eine Legende der Fotografie des 20. Jahrhunderts: Eve Arnold, die amerikanische Fotografin, die es verstand, die Welt mit einer "leidenschaftlichen persönlichen Annäherung" zu erzählen, dem einzigen Werkzeug, das sie als unverzichtbar für einen Fotografen ansah. Um ihre Bedeutung in der Geschichte der Fotografie zu verstehen, genügt es, sich in Erinnerung zu rufen, dass Eve Arnold 1951 zusammen mit Inge Morath die erste Frau war, die der renommierten Agentur Magnum Photos beitrat.
Entschlossenheit, Neugier und vor allem der Wunsch, sich von Stereotypen und Kategorisierungen zu lösen, haben ihr ein vielseitiges Werk beschert: von Porträts der großen Stars des Kinos und des Showbusiness bis hin zu investigativen Reportagen, in denen sie sich mit Themen und Fragen auseinandersetzt, die für die öffentliche Debatte von gestern und heute absolut zentral sind.
Die von Monica Poggi kuratierte und in Zusammenarbeit mit Magnum Photos realisierte Ausstellung umfasst rund 170 Bilder, von denen viele noch nie zuvor ausgestellt wurden, und präsentiert das Gesamtwerk der Fotografin von ihren ersten Schwarz-Weiß-Aufnahmen von New York in den 50er Jahren bis zu ihren letzten Farbarbeiten, die sie im Alter von 85 Jahren am Ende des Jahrhunderts machte. Die ausgewählten Werke befassen sich mit Themen und Fragen wie dem Rassismus in den Vereinigten Staaten, der Emanzipation der Frau und der Interaktion zwischen den verschiedenen Kulturen der Welt. Obwohl sein weltweiter Ruhm zweifellos mit seinen zahlreichen Dreharbeiten an den Kulissen unvergesslicher Filme zusammenhängt, bei denen er die großen Stars der damaligen Zeit von Marlene Dietrich bis Marilyn Monroe, von Joan Crawford bis Orson Welles porträtierte.
Arnolds Karriere ist in der Tat eine Hymne an die weibliche Emanzipation. Seine Sujets sind in den meisten Fällen Frauen: Arbeiterinnen, Mütter, Kinder, Diven, Nonnen, Models, Studentinnen, verewigt, ohne jemals in Stereotypen oder einfache Kategorisierungen zu verfallen, mit der einzigen Absicht zu wissen, zu verstehen und zu erzählen. Die Auswahl und Anordnung der Bilder in der Ausstellung zielt darauf ab, den Reichtum des Werks dieses Autors wiederherzustellen, der auch durch zahlreiche Archivdokumente, Texte, Druckvorlagen, Bücher und Zeitschriften unterstrichen wird, die die Entdeckung einer wahren Legende der Fotografie bereichern.
CAMERA présente, du 25 février au 4 juin 2023, une légende de la photographie du XXe siècle : Eve Arnold, la photographe américaine qui a su raconter le monde avec une " approche personnelle passionnée ", seul outil qu'elle jugeait indispensable pour un photographe. Pour comprendre son importance dans l'histoire de la photographie, il suffit de rappeler qu'Eve Arnold a été la première femme, avec Inge Morath, à rejoindre la prestigieuse agence Magnum Photos en 1951.
La détermination, la curiosité et, surtout, le désir d'échapper à tout stéréotype ou à toute catégorisation facile lui ont permis de produire une œuvre éclectique : des portraits des grandes stars du cinéma et du show-business aux reportages d'investigation où elle a abordé des thèmes et des questions absolument centraux dans le débat public d'hier et d'aujourd'hui.
L'exposition, dont le commissaire est Monica Poggi et qui a été réalisée en collaboration avec Magnum Photos, comprend environ 170 images, dont beaucoup n'ont jamais été exposées auparavant, et présente l'œuvre complète de la photographe, depuis ses premiers clichés en noir et blanc de New York dans les années 1950 jusqu'à ses derniers travaux en couleur, réalisés à l'âge de 85 ans, à la fin du siècle. Les œuvres sélectionnées traitent de thèmes et de questions tels que le racisme aux États-Unis, l'émancipation des femmes et l'interaction entre les différentes cultures du monde. Si sa renommée mondiale est sans doute liée à ses nombreux tournages sur les plateaux de films inoubliables, où il a incarné les grandes stars de l'époque, de Marlene Dietrich à Marilyn Monroe, de Joan Crawford à Orson Welles.
La carrière d'Arnold est en effet un hymne à l'émancipation féminine. Ses sujets sont le plus souvent des femmes : ouvrières, mères, enfants, divas, nonnes, mannequins, étudiantes, immortalisées sans jamais glisser dans les stéréotypes ou les catégorisations faciles, avec la seule intention de savoir, de comprendre et de raconter. Le choix et la disposition des images de l'exposition visent à restituer la richesse de l'œuvre de cet auteur, également mise en valeur par de nombreux documents d'archives, textes, épreuves de presse, livres et revues qui enrichissent la découverte d'une véritable légende de la photographie.
CAMERA propone, dal 25 febbraio al 4 giugno 2023, una leggenda della fotografia del XX secolo: Eve Arnold, la fotografa americana che ha saputo raccontare il mondo con un «appassionato approccio personale», unico strumento reputato da lei indispensabile per un fotografo. Per intendere la sua importanza nella storia della fotografia, è sufficiente ricordare che Eve Arnold è stata la prima donna, insieme a Inge Morath, a far parte della prestigiosa agenzia Magnum Photos nel 1951.
Determinazione, curiosità e, soprattutto, la volontà di fuggire da qualsiasi stereotipo o facile categorizzazione le hanno permesso di produrre un corpus eclettico di opere: dai ritratti delle grandi star del cinema e dello spettacolo ai reportage d’inchiesta dove ha affrontato temi e questioni assolutamente centrali nel dibattito pubblico di ieri e di oggi.
L’esposizione, curata da Monica Poggi e realizzata in collaborazione con Magnum Photos, si compone di circa 170 immagini, di cui molte mai esposte fino ad ora, e presenta l’opera completa della fotografa a partire dai primi scatti in bianco e nero della New York degli anni Cinquanta fino agli ultimi lavori a colori, realizzati all’età di 85 anni, alla fine del secolo. Le opere selezionate affrontano temi e questioni come il razzismo negli Stati Uniti, l’emancipazione femminile, l’interazione fra le differenti culture del mondo. Anche se la sua fama planetaria è senza dubbio legata ai numerosi servizi sui set di film indimenticabili, dove ha ritratto le grandi star del periodo da Marlene Dietrich a Marilyn Monroe, da Joan Crawford a Orson Welles.
La carriera di Arnold è a tutti gli effetti un inno all’emancipazione femminile. I suoi soggetti sono nella maggior parte dei casi donne: lavoratrici, madri, bambine, dive, suore, modelle, studentesse, immortalate senza mai scivolare in stereotipi o facili categorizzazioni, con il solo intento di conoscere, capire e raccontare. La scelta e la disposizione delle immagini in mostra è finalizzata a restituire la ricchezza dell’opera di questa autrice, sottolineata anche attraverso numerosi documenti d’archivio, testi, provini di stampa, libri e riviste in grado di arricchire la scoperta di una vera e propria leggenda della fotografia.
CAMERA presents, from February 25 to June 4, 2023, a legend of 20th-century photography: Eve Arnold, the American photographer who knew how to tell the world with a "passionate personal approach," the only tool she deemed indispensable for a photographer. To understand her importance in the history of photography, it is sufficient to recall that Eve Arnold was the first woman, along with Inge Morath, to join the prestigious Magnum Photos agency in 1951.
Determination, curiosity and, above all, a willingness to escape from any stereotype or easy categorization allowed her to produce an eclectic body of work: from portraits of the great stars of film and show business to investigative reportage where she tackled themes and issues absolutely central to the public debate of yesterday and today.
The exhibition, curated by Monica Poggi and produced in collaboration with Magnum Photos, consists of about 170 images, many of which have never before been exhibited, and presents the photographer's complete oeuvre from her earliest black-and-white shots of 1950s New York to her last color works, taken at the age of 85 at the turn of the century. The selected works address themes and issues such as racism in the United States, women's empowerment, and the interaction between different cultures of the world. Although his planetary fame is undoubtedly linked to his numerous shoots on the sets of unforgettable films, where he portrayed the great stars of the period from Marlene Dietrich to Marilyn Monroe, from Joan Crawford to Orson Welles.
Arnold's career is in effect a paean to women's emancipation. His subjects are in most cases women: workers, mothers, children, divas, nuns, models, students, immortalized without ever slipping into stereotypes or easy categorization, with the sole intent of knowing, understanding and telling. The choice and arrangement of the images in the exhibition is aimed at restoring the richness of this author's work, also emphasized through numerous archival documents, texts, press proofs, books and magazines that can enrich the discovery of a true legend of photography.
