Die Ausstellung Dorothea Lange. Tales of Life and Work, die 200 Bilder umfasst und vom künstlerischen Leiter von CAMERA, Walter Guadagnini, und der Kuratorin Monica Poggi kuratiert wird, präsentiert die Karriere von Dorothea Lange (Hoboken, New Jersey, 1895 - San Francisco, 1965), einer Künstlerin, die, wie John Szarkowski schrieb, "aus freien Stücken eine soziale Beobachterin und aus Instinkt eine Künstlerin" war.
Die Ausstellung, die vom 19. Juli bis zum 8. Oktober zu sehen ist, konzentriert sich insbesondere auf die 1930er und 1940er Jahre, den absoluten Höhepunkt ihres Schaffens, eine Zeit, in der sie die epochalen Ereignisse dokumentierte, die die wirtschaftliche und soziale Struktur der Vereinigten Staaten veränderten. Zwischen 1931 und 1939 wurde der Süden der Vereinigten Staaten von einer schweren Dürre und anhaltenden Sandstürmen heimgesucht, die die Landwirtschaft in der Region zum Erliegen brachten und Tausende von Menschen zur Auswanderung zwangen. Dorothea Lange gehörte zu der Gruppe von Fotografen, die von der Farm Security Administration (einer Regierungsbehörde, die für die Förderung der New-Deal-Politik zuständig war) beauftragt wurde, den Exodus der Landarbeiter auf der Suche nach Arbeit in den großen Plantagen des Central Valley zu dokumentieren: Lange machte Tausende von Aufnahmen und sammelte Geschichten und Erzählungen, die dann in den detaillierten Bildunterschriften, die die Bilder ergänzen, wiedergegeben wurden.
In diesem Kontext entstand das in die Geschichte eingegangene Porträt einer jungen, verzweifelten und von der Armut erschöpften Mutter (Migrant Mother), die mit ihren sieben Kindern in einem Lager aus Zelten und ausgedienten Autos lebt.
Klimakrise, Migration, Diskriminierung: Obwohl mehrere Jahrzehnte zwischen diesen Bildern liegen, sind die von Dorothea Lange behandelten Themen von absoluter Aktualität und geben Anlass zum Nachdenken und zur Diskussion über die Gegenwart und zeigen eine wichtige Etappe in der Geschichte der Fotografie des 20.
Die Ausstellung bietet daher den Einwohnern und Touristen Turins eine unumgängliche Gelegenheit, mehr über die Autorin eines der Bilder zu erfahren, die Mutterschaft und Würde im 20.
L'exposition Dorothea Lange. Tales of Life and Work, composée de 200 images et organisée par Walter Guadagnini, directeur artistique de CAMERA, et Monica Poggi, commissaire de l'exposition, présente la carrière de Dorothea Lange (Hoboken, New Jersey, 1895 - San Francisco, 1965), une artiste qui était, comme l'a écrit John Szarkowski, "par choix un observateur social et par instinct un artiste".
L'exposition, que l'on peut visiter du 19 juillet au 8 octobre, se concentre en particulier sur les années 1930 et 1940, le sommet absolu de son activité, une période au cours de laquelle elle a documenté les événements marquants qui ont modifié la structure économique et sociale des États-Unis. Entre 1931 et 1939, le sud des États-Unis a en effet été frappé par une grave sécheresse et des tempêtes de sable incessantes, qui ont mis l'agriculture de la région à genoux, forçant des milliers de personnes à émigrer. Dorothea Lange fait partie du groupe de photographes sollicités par la Farm Security Administration (agence gouvernementale chargée de promouvoir les politiques du New Deal) pour documenter l'exode des ouvriers agricoles à la recherche d'un emploi dans les grandes plantations de la Central Valley : Lange prend des milliers de clichés, recueillant histoires et récits, qui sont ensuite rapportés dans les légendes détaillées qui complètent les images.
C'est dans ce contexte qu'il réalise le portrait, resté dans l'histoire, d'une jeune mère désespérée et épuisée par la pauvreté (Migrant Mother), qui vit avec ses sept enfants dans un campement de tentes et de voitures désaffectées.
Crise climatique, migrations, discriminations : bien que plusieurs décennies nous séparent de ces images, les thèmes abordés par Dorothea Lange sont d'une actualité absolue et donnent matière à réflexion et à débat sur le présent, tout en mettant en lumière une étape essentielle de l'histoire de la photographie du XXe siècle.
L'exposition offre donc aux Turinois et aux touristes une occasion incontournable de mieux connaître l'auteur d'une des images qui a symbolisé la maternité et la dignité au XXe siècle et de s'interroger sur le présent.

Racconti di vita e lavoro, che si compone di 200 immagini ed è curata dal direttore artistico di CAMERA Walter Guadagnini e dalla curatrice Monica Poggi, presenta la carriera di Dorothea Lange (Hoboken, New Jersey, 1895 – San Francisco, 1965), autrice che è stata, come scrisse John Szarkowski, “per scelta un’osservatrice sociale e per istinto un’artista”.
Il percorso di mostra, visitabile dal 19 luglio all’8 ottobre , si concentra in particolare sugli anni Trenta e Quaranta, picco assoluto della sua attività, periodo nel quale documenta gli eventi epocali che hanno modificato l’assetto economico e sociale degli Stati Uniti. Fra il 1931 e il 1939, il Sud degli Stati Uniti viene infatti colpito da una grave siccità e da continue tempeste di sabbia, che mettono in ginocchio l’agricoltura dell’area, costringendo migliaia di persone a migrare. Dorothea Lange fa parte del gruppo di fotografi chiamati dalla Farm Security Administration (agenzia governativa incaricata di promuovere le politiche del New Deal) a documentare l’esodo dei lavoratori agricoli in cerca di un’occupazione nelle grandi piantagioni della Central Valley: Lange realizza migliaia di scatti, raccogliendo storie e racconti, riportati poi nelle dettagliate didascalie che completano le immagini.
È in questo contesto che realizza il ritratto, passato alla storia, di una giovane madre disperata e stremata dalla povertà (Migrant Mother), che vive insieme ai sette figli in un accampamento di tende e auto dismesse.
La crisi climatica, le migrazioni, le discriminazioni: nonostante ci separino diversi decenni da queste immagini, i temi trattati da Dorothea Lange sono di assoluta attualità e forniscono spunti di riflessione e occasioni di dibattito sul presente, oltre a evidenziare una tappa imprescindibile della storia della fotografia del Novecento.
La mostra offre quindi ai torinesi e ai turisti un’occasione imperdibile per conoscere meglio l’autrice di una delle immagini simbolo della maternità e della dignità del XX secolo e interrogarsi sul presente.
The exhibition Dorothea Lange. Tales of Life and Work, which consists of 200 images and is curated by CAMERA artistic director Walter Guadagnini and curator Monica Poggi, presents the career of Dorothea Lange (Hoboken, New Jersey, 1895 - San Francisco, 1965), an author who was, as John Szarkowski wrote, "by choice a social observer and by instinct an artist."
The exhibition itinerary, which can be visited from July 19 to October 8 , focuses particularly on the 1930s and 1940s, the absolute peak of her activity, a period in which she documented the momentous events that changed the economic and social structure of the United States. Indeed, between 1931 and 1939, the Southern United States was hit by a severe drought and continuous sandstorms, which brought agriculture in the area to its knees, forcing thousands of people to migrate. Dorothea Lange is part of the group of photographers called upon by the Farm Security Administration (a government agency charged with promoting New Deal policies) to document the exodus of farm workers seeking employment on the Central Valley's large plantations.Lange takes thousands of shots, collecting stories and narratives, later reported in the detailed captions that complement the images.
It is in this context that he creates the portrait, which has gone down in history, of a desperate young mother exhausted by poverty (Migrant Mother), who lives with her seven children in an encampment of tents and disused cars.
The climate crisis, migration, discrimination: despite the fact that we are several decades removed from these images, Dorothea Lange's themes are of absolute topicality and provide food for thought and opportunities for debate on the present, as well as highlighting an indispensable stage in the history of twentieth-century photography.
The exhibition therefore offers Turin residents and tourists an unmissable opportunity to learn more about the author of one of the iconic images of motherhood and dignity of the 20th century and to question the present.
