SEPUYA (*1982 in San Bernardino, Kalifornien, USA) ist ein Fotokünstler, dessen Projekte Geschichten und Möglichkeitsräume des Porträts, queere und homoerotische Netzwerke der Produktion und Kollaboration sowie das materielle und konzeptuelle Potenzial von »Blackness« im Herzen des Mediums miteinander verweben. Mit Hilfe von Collagentechniken, Schichtungsverfahren, Fragmentierungen und Spiegelungen untersucht SEPUYA die Komplexität der fotografischen Produktion. Hierbei wird die Beziehung zwischen Künstler*in und Porträtiertem/r neu verhandelt und in das Zentrum des Kunstschaffens gerückt.
Von den frühen, in seinem Schlafzimmer entstandenen Fotografien, bis zu den jüngsten, im Studio des Fotografen produzierten Serien, hinterfragt SEPUYA die Essenz des Atelierraums und erweitert die Definition dessen, was dieser Raum gewesen ist und was er sein könnte. Konzeptionelle und ästhetische Mittel der Studiofotografie des 19. Jahrhunderts werden neu erfunden, um zeitgenössische Fragen des Porträts zu beleuchten.
SEPUYA absolvierte 2004 seinen BFA-Abschluss an der New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts, und 2016 seinen MFA-Abschluss an der UCLA. Er ist Associate Professor für Visual Arts an der University of California, San Diego.

SEPUYA (né en 1982 à San Bernardino, Californie, États-Unis) est un artiste photographe dont les projets entrelacent les histoires et les espaces de possibilités du portrait, les réseaux queer et homoérotiques de production et de collaboration, ainsi que le potentiel matériel et conceptuel de la "négritude" au cœur du médium. En utilisant des techniques de collage, des procédés de stratification, de fragmentation et de réflexion, SEPUYA explore la complexité de la production photographique. Ce faisant, il renégocie la relation entre l'artiste* et son sujet et la place au centre de la création artistique.
Depuis les premières photographies réalisées dans sa chambre à coucher jusqu'aux séries les plus récentes produites dans le studio du photographe, SEPUYA questionne l'essence même de l'espace du studio et élargit la définition de ce que cet espace a été et de ce qu'il pourrait être. Les moyens conceptuels et esthétiques de la photographie de studio du 19e siècle sont réinventés pour mettre en lumière les questions contemporaines du portrait.
SEPUYA a obtenu son BFA à la Tisch School of the Arts de l'Université de New York en 2004 et son MFA à l'UCLA en 2016. Il est professeur associé d'arts visuels à l'Université de Californie, San Diego.

Utilizzando tecniche di collage, stratificazione, frammentazione e rispecchiamento, SEPUYA esplora la complessità della produzione fotografica. In questo modo, il rapporto tra artista e spettatore viene rinegoziato e posto al centro del processo artistico.
Dalle prime fotografie scattate nella sua camera da letto alle serie più recenti prodotte nello studio del fotografo, SEPUYA mette in discussione l'essenza dello spazio dello studio e amplia la definizione di ciò che questo spazio è stato e potrebbe essere. I dispositivi concettuali ed estetici della fotografia di studio del XIX secolo sono reinventati per illuminare le questioni contemporanee del ritratto.

Using collage techniques, layering processes, fragmentation, and mirroring, SEPUYA explores the complexity of photographic production. In doing so, the relationship between artist and sitter is renegotiated and placed at the center of art making.
From the early photographs taken in his bedroom to the most recent series produced in the photographer's studio, SEPUYA questions the essence of the studio space and expands the definition of what that space has been and what it could be. Conceptual and aesthetic devices of 19th century studio photography are reinvented to illuminate contemporary issues of portraiture.
