Lange Zeit widmete sich Reto Camenisch vornehmlich der analogen Schwarzweissfotografie: Sowohl als Bildjournalist für verschiedene Medien (1982–2005) wie auch als künstlerischer Fotograf mit inzwischen zahlreichen Ausstellungen im In- und Ausland (seit 1983). Aus physischen Gründen ging Camenisch inzwischen zur digitalen Farbfotografie über, wobei seine Herangehensweise und Themen mit jenen von früher vergleichbar sind.
Seine Motive findet Camenisch meist auf Wanderungen in entlegene Gebiete und immer wieder auf Reisen ins Ausland, woraus bereits mehrere Fotografiebände hervorgingen. Ihren unverwechselbaren Ausdruck erhalten die Aufnahmen durch bewusstes Abwarten auf den richtigen Moment, durch Camenischs eigene Ergriffenheit und sein Eins-Werden mit einem Ort, einer Situation und deren Gegebenheiten. Diese Verinnerlichung spiegelt sich gleichsam in den Bildern, denen etwas tief Menschliches und zeitlos Natürliches anhaftet. In den Schwarzweissaufnahmen kommt die Dunkeltonigkeit der Landschaften in ihrer dämmrigen Stimmung und dem partiell aufscheinenden Licht besonders adäquat zur Geltung. Nuanciert werden sie auch durch die analoge Aufnahmetechnik und feine Übermalung mit Kohlestaub. Bei den digitalen Aufnahmen nun haben die Farben zusätzlich eine existenzielle Bedeutung für den Künstler, die für die Betrachter:innen ebenso erfahrbar wird.
Pendant longtemps, Reto Camenisch s'est principalement consacré à la photographie analogique en noir et blanc : aussi bien en tant que photojournaliste pour différents médias (1982-2005) qu'en tant que photographe artistique avec, entre-temps, de nombreuses expositions en Suisse et à l'étranger (depuis 1983). Pour des raisons physiques, Camenisch est entre-temps passé à la photographie numérique en couleur, bien que son approche et ses thèmes soient comparables à ceux d'autrefois.
Camenisch trouve ses motifs la plupart du temps lors de randonnées dans des régions reculées et toujours lors de voyages à l'étranger, ce qui a déjà donné lieu à plusieurs volumes de photographies. L'expression unique de ses photos provient de l'attente consciente du bon moment, de la propre émotion de Camenisch et de sa fusion avec un lieu, une situation et ses données. Cette intériorisation se reflète pour ainsi dire dans les visuels, qui ont quelque chose de profondément humain et d'intemporel. Dans les photos en noir et blanc, les tons sombres des paysages sont mis en valeur de manière particulièrement adéquate par leur ambiance crépusculaire et la lumière qui apparaît par endroits. Elles sont également nuancées par la technique de prise de vue analogique et la fine peinture à la poussière de charbon. Dans les prises de vue numériques, les couleurs ont en outre une signification existentielle pour l'artiste, qui est également perceptible pour les spectateurs.
Per molto tempo Reto Camenisch si è dedicato principalmente alla fotografia analogica in bianco e nero: sia come fotoreporter per vari media (1982-2005) sia come fotografo artistico con, nel frattempo, numerose mostre in patria e all'estero (dal 1983). Per motivi fisici, Camenisch è passato alla fotografia digitale a colori, anche se il suo approccio e i suoi temi sono paragonabili a quelli di un tempo.
Camenisch è solito trovare i suoi motivi durante le escursioni in zone remote e nei viaggi all'estero, che hanno già dato vita a diversi volumi di fotografie. Le fotografie traggono la loro inconfondibile espressione dalla consapevole attesa del momento giusto, dall'emozione di Camenisch stesso e dal suo diventare un tutt'uno con un luogo, una situazione e le sue circostanze. Questa interiorizzazione si riflette nelle immagini, che hanno qualcosa di profondamente umano e di naturale senza tempo. Nelle fotografie in bianco e nero, i toni scuri dei paesaggi in atmosfera crepuscolare e la luce parzialmente splendente emergono in modo particolarmente adeguato. Sono anche sfumati dalla tecnica di registrazione analogica e dalla sottile sovrapittura con polvere di carbone. Nelle fotografie digitali, i colori hanno un ulteriore significato esistenziale per l'artista, che può essere vissuto anche dallo spettatore.
Analog black-and-white photography has always been at the center of the work of Reto Camenisch: Both in his years as a photojournalist for various media (1982-2005) and as an artistic photographer with numerous exhibitions in Switzerland and abroad (since 1983).
Due to physical reasons, lately Camenisch has moved on to digital color photography, though his approach and subjects are comparable to the earlier ones.
Camenisch finds his motifs mostly on hikes to remote areas and time and again on trips abroad, which has already resulted in several books of photographs. The photographs get their unmistakable expression by consciously waiting for the right moment, by his own emotion and his becoming one with a place, a situation and its circumstances. This internalization is reflected in the pictures, which have something deeply human and timelessly natural about them. In the black-and-white photographs, the dark tones of the landscapes in their dusky mood and the partially shining light are particularly adequate. They are also nuanced by the analog recording technique and fine overpainting with charcoal dust. In the digital photographs, the colors have an additional existential meaning for the artist, which can also be experienced by the viewer.
