Between the real and the unreal

Anna Cabrera und Angel Albarrán sind brillante Fotochemiker in der Dunkelkammer: als Erfinder neuer Printtechniken und mit Hilfe experimenteller Prozesse erweitern sie ihre «fotografische Syntax» permanent: Die Fotografie dient ihnen als Instrument, die Konzepte von Identität, Erinnerung und Zeit zu erforschen und die Feinheiten des Bewusstseins besser zu verstehen.
Die gezeigten Werke umfassen die letzten 10 Jahre ihres kreativen Schaffens: von Silbergelatine- und Platin-Palladium-Abzügen bis hin zu ihren berühmten leuchtenden Farblandschaften auf japanischem Gampi-Papier über Blattgold. Zu sehen sind auch ihre jüngsten Arbeiten: komplexe Karbon-Prints sowie prismatische Abstraktionen von polarisiertem Licht.
Die Ausstellung zeugt von der investigativen Kraft des Künstlerduos, technisch wie inhaltlich. Denn schlussendlich ist es auch die Wahl der Printtechnik, die die Geschichte eines Bildes zu Ende erzählt: Ob Pigment, Silber, Carbon, Cyanotypie oder Platinum – die Künstler wählen für jedes Werk aus einer breiten Palette von Verfahren und Materialien, die dem Print eine für die Technik typische Textur und Farbqualität verleihen.
In ihren eigenen Worten: «At first we photographed with the simple intention of recording what we saw. But soon our interest shifted from capturing the superficial appearance of reality to investigating its ‘underlying structure’. Thus, photography has in this way become the perfect philosophical tool with which to understand the world and our images are the by-product of that investigation, the notebooks of our research.»
Albarrán Cabreras Werke faszinieren Kunst- und Fotografiesammler/innen weltweit: sie sind hoch ästhetisch, voller philosophischer und kunsthistorischer Referenzen und darüber hinaus von taktiler und sinnlicher Qualität. Nach fast 8-jähriger Repräsentanz des Künstlerduos, freuen wir uns, eine zweite umfassend Einzelausstellung in Zürich zu präsentieren.
Anna Cabrera et Angel Albarrán sont de brillants chimistes photographiques dans la chambre noire : en tant qu'inventeurs de nouvelles techniques d'impression et à l'aide de processus expérimentaux, ils élargissent en permanence leur "syntaxe photographique" : la photographie leur sert d'instrument pour explorer les concepts d'identité, de mémoire et de temps et pour mieux comprendre les subtilités de la conscience.
Les œuvres présentées couvrent les dix dernières années de leur travail créatif : des tirages au gélatino-argent et au platine-palladium à leurs célèbres paysages aux couleurs vives sur papier japonais Gampi, en passant par les feuilles d'or. On peut également y voir ses travaux les plus récents : des impressions complexes au carbone ainsi que des abstractions prismatiques de lumière polarisée.
L'exposition témoigne de la force d'investigation du duo d'artistes, tant sur le plan technique que sur celui du contenu. Car en fin de compte, c'est aussi le choix de la technique d'impression qui raconte l'histoire d'une image jusqu'au bout : Pigment, argent, carbone, cyanotype ou platine - pour chaque œuvre, les artistes choisissent parmi une large palette de procédés et de matériaux qui confèrent à l'impression une texture et une qualité de couleur typiques de la technique.
Selon leurs propres termes : "Au début, nous avons photographié avec la simple intention d'enregistrer ce que nous voyions. Mais très vite, notre intérêt s'est détourné de la capture de l'aspect superficial de la réalité pour examiner sa 'structure sous-jacente'. Ainsi, la photographie est devenue l'outil philosophique parfait pour comprendre le monde et nos images sont le produit dérivé de cette investigation, les carnets de notes de notre recherche".
Les œuvres d'Albarrán Cabrera fascinent les collectionneurs d'art et de photographies du monde entier : elles sont hautement esthétiques, pleines de références philosophiques et à l'histoire de l'art et, en outre, d'une qualité tactile et sensuelle. Après presque 8 ans de représentation du duo d'artistes, nous sommes heureux de présenter une deuxième exposition individuelle complète à Zurich.
Anna Cabrera e Angel Albarrán sono brillanti fotochimici in camera oscura: come inventori di nuove tecniche di stampa e con l'aiuto di processi sperimentali, ampliano costantemente la loro "sintassi fotografica": la fotografia serve loro come strumento per esplorare i concetti di identità, memoria e tempo e per comprendere meglio le sottigliezze della coscienza.
Le opere in mostra abbracciano gli ultimi 10 anni del loro lavoro creativo: dalle stampe alla gelatina d'argento e al platino-palladio ai loro famosi paesaggi luminosi a colori su carta giapponese gampi con foglia d'oro. In mostra anche i suoi lavori più recenti: complesse stampe al carbonio e astrazioni prismatiche di luce polarizzata.
La mostra testimonia il potere investigativo del duo di artisti, sia dal punto di vista tecnico che da quello dei contenuti. In fondo, è la scelta della tecnica di stampa che racconta la storia di un'immagine fino in fondo: Che si tratti di pigmento, argento, carbone, cianotipia o platino, per ogni opera gli artisti scelgono tra un'ampia gamma di processi e materiali che conferiscono alla stampa la consistenza e la qualità cromatica tipiche della tecnica.
Nelle loro stesse parole: "All'inizio fotografavamo con la semplice intenzione di registrare ciò che vedevamo. Ma ben presto il nostro interesse si è spostato dalla cattura dell'aspetto superficiale della realtà all'indagine della sua 'struttura sottostante'. In questo modo, la fotografia è diventata il perfetto strumento filosofico con cui comprendere il mondo e le nostre immagini sono il sottoprodotto di questa indagine, i quaderni della nostra ricerca."
Le opere di Albarrán Cabrera affascinano i collezionisti d'arte e di fotografia di tutto il mondo: sono altamente estetiche, ricche di riferimenti filosofici e storico-artistici, e hanno anche una qualità tattile e sensuale. Dopo quasi 8 anni di rappresentanza del duo di artisti, siamo lieti di presentare una seconda mostra personale completa a Zurigo.
Anna Cabrera and Angel Albarrán are photochemists working in the darkroom: as inventors of new printing techniques and with the help of experimental processes, they are constantly expanding their “photographic syntax”: photography serves them as a tool to explore the concepts of identity, memory and time and the subtleties of consciousness to understand reality better.
The works on display span the last 10 years of their creative work: from gelatin silver and platinum palladium prints to their famous luminous color landscapes on Japanese Gampi paper and gold leaf. Also on view are their most recent works: complex carbon prints and prismatic abstractions of polarized light.
The exhibition testifies to the investigative power of the artist duo, both technically and in terms of content. After all, it is also the choice of print technique that tells the story of a picture to the end: Whether pigment, silver, carbon, cyanotype or platinum - the artists choose for each work from a wide range of processes and materials that give the print a special touch and for the technique typical texture and color quality.

Albarrán Cabrera’s works fascinate art and photography collectors worldwide: they are highly aesthetic, full of philosophical and art-historical references and, moreover, of tactile and sensual quality. After almost 8 years of representation of the artist duo, we are pleased to present a second comprehensive solo exhibition in Zurich.
