Back up the future - Fotografien aus der Kunstsammlung der Stadt Biel

23 Jahre jung war der Fotograf Peter Maurer, als er 1986 in Biel/Bienne die Fotoserie «Reise in die Zukunftsstadt» realisierte. Es war seine Eingabe für einen Wettbewerb zum Thema «Zukunft», möglicherweise ausgeschrieben von der Stadt – ganz sicher ist sich Peter Maurer nicht mehr, nicht nach so langer Zeit. Er habe sogar in der Gegend von Biel gewohnt in jenem Jahr, erinnert sich Maurer, er habe ein Praktikum absolviert bei einem Meister der Schweizer Fotografie-Szene, bei Heini Stucki. Mit seiner verträumt-dynamischen Selbstinszenierung als Handelsreisender auf dem Sprung in die Bieler Stadtlandschaft – in eine lichtdurchflutete Zukunftsvision – entschied Peter Maurer den Wettbewerb für sich und konnte CHF 3000 Preisgeld einstreichen – «damals eine Menge Geld», lacht Maurer. Die Fotos wurden dann im Photoforum Pasquart ausgestellt, das gerade sein dreijähriges Bestehen feierte, und in der Folge von der Kunstkommission der Stadt Biel/Bienne angekauft.
Nun ziert eine Fotografie aus Maurers Serie das Plakat der Sommerausstellung des Photoforums mit dem Titel BACK UP THE FUTURE, die in Zusammenarbeit mit der Dienststelle für Kultur entstanden ist. Das Photoforum hat den Bieler Künstler und Fotograf Thalles Piaget, selber kaum älter als es Peter Maurer 1986 war, mit der Aufgabe betraut, eine subjektive Auswahl aus den 2485 fotografischen Werken zu treffen, die in der Kunstsammlung der Stadt Biel/Bienne gelistet sind. Mit seinem frischen und professionellen Blick sowie einem untrüglichen Gespür für fotografische Qualitäten hat er einen ebenso reichhaltigen wie überraschenden Bilderbogen gespannt, von Porträts aus dem 19. Jahrhundert bis zu zeitgenössischer Fotokunst. Vor dem Hintergrund der Stadt Biel/Bienne vereint die Ausstellung sowohl bekannte Bieler Namen wie Christian Staub, Heini Stucki, Jeanne Chevalier, Alexander Jaquemet, Guadeloupe Ruiz Françoise und Daniel Cartier, Rolf Neeser oder Eric Sandmeier mit internationalen Grössen wie Christian Vogt, Mathieu Gafsou, Raphael Hefti, Oscar Wiggli, Ernst und Margrit Baumann sowie weniger bekannten oder schon wieder vergessenen künstlerischen Positionen. Zudem hat Thalles Piaget einige überraschende Entdeckungen gemacht, so eine Portraitfotografie aus der Kamera der ehemaligen Direktorin des Photoforums und jetzigen Leiterin des Centre de la Photographie in Genf, Danaé Panchaud, oder eine Diaserie von Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, entstanden für und ausgestellt an den Bieler Fototagen vor einigen Jahren. Die Kunstsammlung der Stadt Biel/Bienne entpuppt sich so als reichhaltiges lokales «Back-Up» eines Mediums, das wie kaum ein anderes unsere Gesellschaft geprägt hat und sich stetig weiterentwickelt.

Le photographe Peter Maurer avait 23 ans lorsqu’il a réalisé la série de photos « Voyage dans la ville du futur » à Biel/Bienne en 1986. C’était son projet pour un concours sur le thème de l’avenir, peut-être organisé par la ville – Peter Maurer n’en est plus tout à fait sûr après tant de temps. Il habitait dans la région de Bienne cette année-là et faisait un stage chez un maître de la scène photographique suisse, Heini Stucki. Avec sa mise en scène rêveuse et dynamique de lui-même en tant que voyageur de commerce sur le point d’entrer dans le paysage urbain de Bienne – dans une vision d’avenir inondée de lumière – Peter Maurer a remporté le concours et a pu empocher 3000 CHF de prix – « beaucoup d’argent à l’époque », rit Maurer. Les photos ont ensuite été exposées au Photoforum Pasquart, qui venait de fêter ses trois ans d’existence, avant d’être achetées par la commission artistique de la ville de Biel/Bienne.
Aujourd’hui, une photographie de la série de Maurer orne l’affiche de l’exposition d’été du Photoforum intitulée BACK UP THE FUTURE, réalisée en collaboration avec le Service de la culture. Le Photoforum a confié à l’artiste et photographe biennois Thalles Piaget (à peine plus âgé que Peter Maurer en 1986) la tâche de faire une sélection subjective parmi les 2485 œuvres photographiques répertoriées dans la collection d’art de la ville de Biel/Bienne. Avec son regard frais et professionnel ainsi qu’un flair infaillible pour les qualités photographiques, il a tissé un arc d’images aussi riche que surprenant, des portraits du 19ème siècle à l’art photographique contemporain. Avec la ville de Biel/Bienne en toile de fond, l’exposition réunit aussi bien des noms biennois connus comme Christian Staub, Heini Stucki, Jeanne Chevalier, Alexander Jaquemet, Raphael Hefti, Françoise et Daniel Cartier, Rolf Neeser ou Eric Sandmeier que des grands noms internationaux comme Christian Vogt, Matthieu Gafsou, Oscar Wiggli, Ernst et Margrit Baumann ainsi que des positions artistiques moins connues ou déjà oubliées. De plus, Thalles Piaget a fait quelques découvertes surprenantes, comme une photographie de portrait prise par l’ancienne directrice du Photoforum et actuelle directrice du Centre de la Photographie à Genève, Danaé Panchaud, ou une série de diapositives de Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, réalisées pour les Journées photographiques de Bienne il y a quelques années. La collection d’art de la ville de Biel/Bienne se révèle ainsi être un riche « back-up » local d’un média qui a façonné notre société comme peu d’autres et qui continue à évoluer.

Il fotografo Peter Maurer aveva 23 anni quando realizzò la serie fotografica "Viaggio nella città del futuro" a Biel/Bienne nel 1986. Si trattava della sua partecipazione a un concorso sul tema "Futuro", forse indetto dalla città - Peter Maurer non ne è più sicuro, non dopo tanto tempo. Quell'anno, ricorda Maurer, visse addirittura nella zona di Bienne, dove fece uno stage con un maestro della scena fotografica svizzera, Heini Stucki. Con il suo ritratto sognante e dinamico di un commesso viaggiatore che balza nel paesaggio urbano di Bienne, in una visione del futuro inondata di luce, Peter Maurer vinse il concorso e incassò un premio di 3000 franchi svizzeri: "un sacco di soldi a quei tempi", ride Maurer. Le foto furono esposte al Photoforum Pasquart, che aveva appena festeggiato il suo terzo anniversario, e successivamente acquistate dalla Commissione artistica della città di Biel/Bienne.
Ora una fotografia della serie di Maurer adorna il poster della mostra estiva del Photoforum intitolata BACK UP THE FUTURE, realizzata in collaborazione con il Dipartimento della Cultura. Il Photoforum ha affidato all'artista e fotografo biellese Thalles Piaget, lui stesso poco più anziano di Peter Maurer nel 1986, il compito di effettuare una selezione soggettiva tra le 2485 opere fotografiche presenti nella collezione d'arte della città di Biel/Bienne. Con il suo occhio fresco e professionale e un senso infallibile per le qualità fotografiche, ha spaziato su un arco di immagini altrettanto ricco e sorprendente, dai ritratti del XIX secolo all'arte fotografica contemporanea. Sullo sfondo della città di Biel/Bienne, la mostra riunisce nomi noti di Biel/Bienne come Christian Staub, Heini Stucki, Jeanne Chevalier, Alexander Jaquemet, Guadalupe Ruiz Françoise e Daniel Cartier, Rolf Neeser o Eric Sandmeier con grandi nomi internazionali come Christian Vogt, Mathieu Gafsou, Raphael Hefti, Oscar Wiggli, Ernst e Margrit Baumann e posizioni artistiche meno note o già dimenticate. Inoltre, Thalles Piaget ha fatto alcune scoperte sorprendenti, come un ritratto fotografico proveniente dalla macchina dell'ex direttore del Photoforum e attuale direttore del Centre de la Photographie di Ginevra, Danaé Panchaud, o una serie di diapositive di Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, create per il Bieler Fototage ed esposte qualche anno fa. La collezione d'arte della città di Biel/Bienne si rivela quindi un ricco "back-up" locale di un mezzo che ha plasmato la nostra società come nessun altro ed è in continua evoluzione.

23 years young, photographer Peter Maurer realized the photo series “Journey to the Future City” in 1986 in Biel/Bienne. It was his entry for a competition on the theme of “Future”, possibly announced by the city – Peter Maurer is no longer quite sure, not after so long. He even lived in the Biel area that year, Maurer remembers, and did an internship with a master of the Swiss photography scene, Heini Stucki. With his dreamy, dynamic self-staging as a traveling salesman leaping into the Biel cityscape – into a light-flooded vision of the future – Peter Maurer won the competition and collected CHF 3,000 in prize money – “a lot of money in those days,” Maurer laughs. The photos were then exhibited at Photoforum Pasquart, which had just celebrated its third anniversary, and subsequently purchased by the art commission of the city of Biel/Bienne.
Now, a photograph from Maurer’s series adorns the poster for the Photoforum’s summer exhibition titled BACK UP THE FUTURE, produced in collaboration with the Office of Culture. The Photoforum has entrusted Biel artist and photographer Thalles Piaget, himself barely older than Peter Maurer was in 1986, with the task of making a subjective selection from the 2485 photographic works listed in the art collection of the city of Biel/Bienne. With his fresh and professional eye as well as an unerring sense for photographic qualities, he has spanned an arch of images that is as rich as it is surprising, from portraits from the 19th century to contemporary photographic art. Against the backdrop of the city of Biel/Bienne, the exhibition brings together well-known Biel/Bienne names such as Christian Staub, Heini Stucki, Jeanne Chevalier, Alexander Jaquemet, Guadeloupe Ruiz Françoise and Daniel Cartier, Rolf Neeser or Eric Sandmeier with international greats such as Christian Vogt, Mathieu Gafsou, Raphael Hefti, Oscar Wiggli, Ernst and Margrit Baumann as well as lesser-known or already forgotten artistic positions. In addition, Thalles Piaget has made some surprising discoveries, such as a portrait photograph from the camera of the former director of the Photoforum and current director of the Centre de la Photographie in Geneva, Danaé Panchaud, or a slide series by Taiyo Onorato & Nico Krebs, created for and exhibited at the Bieler Fototage a few years ago. The art collection of the city of Biel/Bienne thus turns out to be a rich local “back-up” of a medium that has shaped our society like hardly any other and is constantly evolving.
