Sein Werk, das das Medium der Fotografie, das Genre des Selbstporträts und die Performance miteinander verbindet, nimmt heute einen zentralen Platz in der zeitgenössischen internationalen Kunstszene ein.
Samuel Fosso wurde 1962 in Kamerun geboren. Er zog nach Bangui in der Zentralafrikanischen Republik zu seinem Onkel und begann bereits im Alter von 13 Jahren eine Karriere als Studiofotograf. Neben seiner Auftragsarbeit schuf er sich eine Reihe von Avataren, die die Codes der Repräsentation herausforderten. Von diesem Zeitpunkt an erfindet sich Fosso in Selbstporträts immer wieder neu, mit denen er Grenzen überschreitet, seien sie sozialer, geografischer oder zeitlicher Art. Seine Werke stellen Identitätsnormen auf die Probe und feiern unsere Freiheit zur Selbstbestimmung.
Die Ausstellung mit über 300 Abzügen vereint symbolträchtige Serien und vertraulichere Arbeiten, alte und unveröffentlichte Fotografien in einem überwiegend seriellen Parcours. Sie berichtet über die künstlerische Arbeit von Samuel Fosso, aber auch über seinen persönlichen Werdegang, indem sie diese beiden Perspektiven in einen Dialog bringt.
Die Ausstellung wird in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac realisiert.
Sie wird international auf Wanderschaft gehen und unter anderem im Huis Marseille in Amsterdam, Niederlande, und in der Walther Collection in Neu-Ulm, Deutschland, zu sehen sein.
Anlässlich der Ausstellung und in Zusammenarbeit mit der MEP veröffentlicht der Steidl-Verlag die französische Version des Buches Autoportrait, das erste monografische Werk, das dem Künstler gewidmet ist.
Samuel Fosso widmet diese Ausstellung dem Gedenken an Okwui Enwezor.
Mêlant le médium photographique, le genre de l’autoportrait et la performance, son œuvre occupe aujourd’hui une place centrale sur la scène artistique internationale contemporaine.
Né au Cameroun en 1962, Samuel Fosso s’installe à Bangui, en Centrafrique, chez son oncle et débute une carrière de photographe de studio dès l’âge de 13 ans. En dehors de son travail de commande, il se crée une série d’avatars défiant les codes de la représentation. À partir de cette époque, Fosso n’aura de cesse de se réinventer dans des autoportraits qui lui permettent de traverser les frontières, qu’elles soient sociales, géographiques ou temporelles. Ses œuvres éprouvent les normes identitaires et célèbrent notre liberté à l’autodétermination.
Cette exposition, de plus de 300 tirages, rassemble des séries emblématiques et des travaux plus confidentiels, des photographies anciennes et inédites, dans un parcours majoritairement sériel. Elle rend compte du travail artistique de Samuel Fosso mais également de son parcours personnel par une mise en dialogue de ces deux perspectives.
L’exposition est réalisée avec la participation du musée du quai Branly – Jacques Chirac.
Elle fera l’objet d’une itinérance à l’internationale et sera notamment présentée à Huis Marseille à Amsterdam, Pays-Bas et à la Walther Collection à Neu-Ulm, Allemagne.
À l’occasion de l’exposition et en collaboration avec la MEP, les éditions Steidl publient la version française du livre Autoportrait, premier ouvrage monographique dédié à l’artiste.
Samuel Fosso dédie cette exposition à la mémoire d’Okwui Enwezor.

Nato in Camerun nel 1962, Samuel Fosso si trasferì a Bangui nella Repubblica Centrafricana per vivere con suo zio e iniziò la sua carriera di fotografo in studio all'età di 13 anni. Oltre ai suoi lavori su commissione, ha creato una serie di avatar che sfidano i codici della rappresentazione. Da quel momento in poi, Fosso non ha mai smesso di reinventarsi in autoritratti che gli hanno permesso di attraversare le frontiere, siano esse sociali, geografiche o temporali. Le sue opere mettono alla prova le norme di identità e celebrano la nostra libertà di autodeterminazione.
Questa mostra di più di 300 stampe riunisce serie emblematiche e opere più confidenziali, fotografie vecchie e inedite, in un formato prevalentemente seriale. Riflette il lavoro artistico di Samuel Fosso e il suo percorso personale attraverso un dialogo tra queste due prospettive.
La mostra è organizzata con la partecipazione del musée du quai Branly - Jacques Chirac.
Sarà in tournée a livello internazionale e sarà presentato al Huis Marseille di Amsterdam, Paesi Bassi, e alla Walther Collection di Neu-Ulm, Germania.
In occasione della mostra e in collaborazione con il MEP, Steidl Editions pubblica la versione francese del libro Autoportrait, la prima opera monografica dedicata all'artista.
Samuel Fosso dedica questa mostra alla memoria di Okwui Enwezor.
Working between photography, self-portraiture and performance, his work occupies a central position in the international contemporary art world. Born in 1962 in Kumba, Cameroon, Fosso survived the civil war in Nigeria, before settling to live with his uncle in Bangui in the Central African Republic, where he began his career as a studio photographer at the age of 13. It was here that, outside of his daily work making portraits to order, he began making self-portraits for his own pleasure, creating a series of alternate identities challenging representational conventions. Ever since this time Fosso has continued to reinvent himself through his self-portraits which have allowed him to reach beyond the limitations usually imposed by society, geography and time. Above all his work questions what is at stake in accepted codes of representation and identity, as well as celebrating freedom of expression.
Comprising more than 300 prints, the exhibition brings together iconic series, lesser-known works, as well as archival material and previously unpublished, unseen images, displayed principally in large-scale ensembles. By offering overviews of both Fosso’s artistic practice and his personal story, and indeed the relationship between the two, the show offers a complete account of the artist.
The exhibition has been produced by the MEP with the support of Art Mentor Foundation Lucerne and in collaboration with our international touring partner.
The exhibition is the occasion to a collaboration between the MEP and the Steidl publishing house through the production of the French version of the first monographic work devoted to Samuel Fosso; Autoportrait, collective, ed Steidl, 2020.
Samuel Fosso dedicates this exhibition to the memory of Okwui Enwezor.
