The Discipline of the Senses ist der Titel der ersten großen Retrospektive, die dem deutschen Künstler Hans Georg Berger gewidmet ist, dessen Fotografie stets auf die Erforschung persönlicher und kultureller Identitäten ausgerichtet war. Ein Titel, der die tiefgreifenden intellektuellen Erfahrungen und Forschungen, die über einen Zeitraum von fast fünfzig Jahren, von den 1970er Jahren bis heute, gemacht wurden, in einem einzigen Diskurs vereinigt.
Der rote Faden des Projekts kristallisierte sich langsam durch einen langen Dialog mit der Künstlerin heraus. Der Kurator Francesco Paolo Campione erklärt: "Hans Georg Berger hat sich bewusst für die Fotografie als existenzielles Mittel entschieden, als solides Instrument, um seiner eigenen Identität und seinem eigenen Universum der Sinne und Träume Substanz zu verleihen; etwas, das durch die Kunst das Leiden mildert, das durch einen feindseligen sozialen Kontext erzeugt wird.
Seine unablässige Recherche hat es Berger ermöglicht, den Reichtum seiner eigenen inneren Welt ins Spiel zu bringen. So hat sich seine Erkundung allmählich von der Intimität seiner Beziehung mit dem französischen Schriftsteller Hervé Guibert (1955-1991) über die soziale Dimension der Bewohner von Rio nell'Elba bis hin zur Darstellung des Theravāda-Buddhismus und des schiitischen Islams nach einer langen Reise durch Asien ausgeweitet. Sowohl die Reise als auch die Landung sind von der Ausübung einer strengen intellektuellen Disziplin geprägt, die sich, vor allem auf sein eigenes Leben angewandt, in eine Sprache verwandelt hat, die in der Lage ist, die wesentlichen Merkmale der Realität zu erfassen.
Bergers Ansatz basiert auf der ethischen, und nicht nur ästhetischen, Zentralität des fotografierten Objekts. Eine außergewöhnliche Reise, wahrscheinlich einzigartig, innerhalb der großen zeitgenössischen Fotografie.
La discipline des sens est le titre de la première grande rétrospective consacrée à l'artiste allemand Hans Georg Berger, dont la photographie a toujours été axée sur l'investigation des identités, tant personnelles que culturelles. Un titre qui réunit en un seul discours les expériences intellectuelles profondes et les recherches menées sur une période de près de cinquante ans, des années 1970 à nos jours.
Le fil conducteur du projet a lentement émergé d'un long dialogue avec l'artiste. Comme l'explique le commissaire, Francesco Paolo Campione, "Hans Georg Berger a consciemment choisi la photographie comme remède existentiel, comme instrument solide, pour donner corps à sa propre identité et à son propre univers de sens et de rêves ; quelque chose qui atténue, par l'art, la souffrance générée par un contexte social hostile.
Ses recherches incessantes ont permis à Berger de mettre en jeu la richesse de son propre monde intérieur. Son exploration s'est ainsi progressivement élargie de l'intimité de sa relation avec l'écrivain français Hervé Guibert (1955-1991), à la dimension sociale des habitants de Rio nell'Elba, et enfin, après un long voyage en Asie, à la représentation du bouddhisme Theravāda et de l'islam chiite. Tant le voyage que l'atterrissage sont marqués par l'exercice d'une discipline intellectuelle stricte qui, appliquée avant tout à sa propre vie, s'est transformée en un langage capable de saisir les traits essentiels de la réalité.
L'approche de Berger est fondée sur la centralité éthique, et pas seulement esthétique, de l'objet photographié. Un voyage extraordinaire, probablement unique, au sein de la grande photographie contemporaine.
La disciplina dei sensi è il titolo della prima grande retrospettiva dedicata all’artista tedesco Hans Georg Berger, la cui fotografia è da sempre volta all’indagine delle identità, sia personali sia culturali. Un titolo che unisce in un unico discorso le profonde esperienze intellettuali e le ricerche condotte nell’arco di quasi cinquant’anni, dagli anni ’70 a oggi.
Il filo conduttore del progetto è emerso lentamente attraverso un lungo dialogo con l’artista. Come spiega il curatore, Francesco Paolo Campione, «Hans Georg Berger ha scelto consapevolmente la fotografia come rimedio esistenziale, come solido strumento, per dare corpo alla propria identità e al proprio universo di sensi e di sogni; qualcosa che attenua, attraverso l’arte, la sofferenza generata da un contesto sociale ostile».
La sua incessante ricerca ha permesso a Berger di mettere in gioco la ricchezza del proprio mondo interiore. La sua esplorazione si è così progressivamente allargata dall’intimo della sua relazione con lo scrittore francese Hervé Guibert (1955-1991), alla dimensione sociale degli abitanti di Rio nell’Elba, sino ad approdare, dopo un lungo viaggio attraverso l’Asia, alla rappresentazione del buddhismo theravāda e dell’Islam sciita. Sia il viaggio sia l’approdo sono contraddistinti dall’esercizio di una ferrea disciplina intellettuale che, applicata innanzi tutto alla propria vita, si è trasformata in un linguaggio capace di cogliere i tratti essenziali della realtà.
Un approccio, quello di Berger, che si fonda sulla centralità etica, e non soltanto estetica, dell’oggetto fotografato. Un viaggio straordinario, probabilmente unico, all’interno della grande fotografia contemporanea.
The Discipline of the Senses is the title of the first major retrospective dedicated to the German artist Hans Georg Berger, whose photography has always focused on the investigation of identities, both personal and cultural. A title that unites in a single discourse the profound intellectual experiences and research conducted over a period of almost fifty years, from the 1970s to the present.
The thread of the project has slowly emerged through a long dialogue with the artist. As the curator, Francesco Paolo Campione, explains, "Hans Georg Berger has consciously chosen photography as an existential remedy, as a solid instrument, to give body to his own identity and to his own universe of senses and dreams; something that attenuates, through art, the suffering generated by a hostile social context".
His incessant research has allowed Berger to bring into play the richness of his own inner world. His exploration has thus progressively widened from the intimacy of his relationship with the French writer Hervé Guibert (1955-1991), to the social dimension of the inhabitants of Rio nell'Elba, and finally, after a long journey through Asia, to the representation of Theravāda Buddhism and Shiite Islam. Both the journey and the landing are marked by the exercise of a strict intellectual discipline that, applied first of all to his own life, has become a language capable of capturing the essential features of reality.
Berger's approach is based on the ethical, and not only aesthetic, centrality of the photographed object. An extraordinary journey, probably unique, within the great contemporary photography.
