German Theater 2010-2020 bildet die erste Retrospektive des Werks von Calla Henkel (*1988, Minneapolis) und Max Pitegoff (*1987, Buffalo). Sie bietet eine Übersicht ihrer Arbeit während des letzten Jahrzehnts, in dem das Duo einen neuen Zugang zur konzeptuellen Fotografie und, parallel dazu, die Konstruktion sozialer Situationen, ausgehend von Bar- und Theaterbetrieben innerhalb der Berliner Kunstszene entwickelte. Neben einer Auswahl aus ihren markantesten Bilderserien, würdigt die Ausstellung den gemeinschaftlichen Charakter ihrer Unterfangen.
Berlin, als etablierte Hauptstadt der Boheme, bietet in der jüngsten Zeit auch der neuen digitalen Ökonomie und ihren Konsumformen einen fruchtbaren Boden. Das Werk von Henkel und Pitegoff bildet eine Allegorie eines historischen Moments, mit Präkarisierung und Gentrifizierung als zwei Seiten derselben Medaille.
Die Ausstellung ist in Zusammenarbeit mit dem Gastkurator Fabrice Stroun entstanden.

German Theater 2010-2020 est la première rétrospective de l’œuvre de Calla Henkel (*1988, Minneapolis) et Max Pitegoff (*1987, Buffalo). Elle offre un aperçu d’une décennie de production dans laquelle les artistes ont développé en parallèle une approche conceptuelle renouvelée de la photographie et la construction de situations au sein de la scène culturelle berlinoise à partir d’une gestion de bars et de théâtres. Au côté d'une sélection extraite de leurs séries d’images les plus remarquables, l’exposition rend hommage au caractère social et communautaire de leur entreprise.
Berlin, capitale culturelle bohème établie, est devenu plus récemment un environnement fertile pour la nouvelle économie digitale et ses formes de consommation. Le travail de Henkel et Pitegoff se présente comme l’allégorie d’un moment historique où précarisation et gentrification forment les deux faces d'une même pièce.

German Theater 2010-2020 is the first survey of the work of Calla Henkel (*1988, Minneapolis) and Max Pitegoff (*1987, Buffalo). The exhibition offers an insight into a decade of production during which the artists developed both a renewed conceptual approach to photography and the construction of social situations within the Berlin cultural scene, including running bars and staging theater plays. Alongside a large selection from their most significant photo series, the exhibition pays tribute to the collaborative character of their enterprise.
Berlin, already an established bohemian cultural capital, has more recently become a fertile environment for the new digital economy and its forms of consumption. Henkel and Pitegoff’s oeuvre spins the allegory of a historical moment in which precarity and gentrification function as two sides of the same coin.
The exhibition is realized in collaboration with guest curator Fabrice Stroun.
