Die Reise der gebürtigen Italienerin Modotti führte sie in das Epizentrum der Kunst und Politik des frühen 20. Jahrhunderts, von ihren Anfängen als Stummfilmschauspielerin in Hollywood bis hin zu ihren Verbindungen zu den mexikanischen Kunstbewegungen, in denen Frida Kahlo und Diego Rivera eine zentrale Rolle spielten. Mit ihrer Kamera hielt Modotti die Sehenswürdigkeiten und Menschen Mexikos fest und konzentrierte sich dabei auf Frauen, Folklore und religiöse Kunst. Mit ihrem rohen fotografischen Werk wurde sie zu einer zentralen Figur in der Welt der modernistischen Fotografie. Modottis Geschichte reicht jedoch weit über den künstlerischen Rahmen hinaus. Ihre Verbundenheit mit revolutionären Idealen bringt sie an die vorderste Front des sozialen Wandels. Nachdem sie sich in Moskau niedergelassen und sich der Kommunistischen Partei der Sowjetunion angeschlossen hatte, gab sie 1931 die Fotografie ganz auf, um sich der Politik zu widmen. Modotti verstarb 1942 im Alter von 45 Jahren. Noch Jahrzehnte nach ihrem Tod wurde ihr Talent von Geheimnissen und dem Fehlen biografischer Informationen überschattet. Das machte ihr Leben zu einer Legende.
Die Ausstellung versammelt fast 250 alte Drucke als Leihgaben von 9 bedeutenden internationalen Institutionen und verschiedenen privaten Leihgebern und Sammlungen, darunter illustrierte Zeitschriften und Originalwerke von Fotografen aus Modottis engstem Umfeld, wie Edward Weston.
Unerzählte Geschichten von unbekannten Ikonen
Die Ausstellung Tina Modotti ist die dritte in einer Reihe, in der Foam den unbekannten Geschichten unbekannter Ikonen eine Plattform bietet. Ähnlich wie Ernest Cole und Ara Güler zu Beginn dieses Jahres wählt Foam einen anderen Blickwinkel auf die Geschichte, indem es Künstlern eine Plattform bietet, die in der bestehenden Geschichte der Fotografie übersehen oder vergessen wurden. Die meiste Zeit ihres Lebens und auch danach stand das Werk von Tina Modotti im Schatten des einflussreichen und renommierten Fotografen Edward Weston, der sie in das Feld der Fotografie eingeführt hatte. Neuere Forschungen haben ergeben, dass die Fotografien von Weston und Modotti oft nur schwer voneinander zu unterscheiden sind und manchmal fälschlicherweise der berühmte Weston einer Fotografie zugeordnet wird. Mit dieser Ausstellung bietet Foam Tina Modotti eine Bühne, um sie als eine der engagiertesten und herausragendsten Künstlerinnen ihrer Zeit zu würdigen.
Née en Italie, le parcours de Modotti l'a conduite à l'épicentre de l'art et de la politique du début du XXe siècle, depuis ses débuts en tant qu'actrice de films muets à Hollywood jusqu'à ses relations avec les mouvements artistiques mexicains, où Frida Kahlo et Diego Rivera ont joué un rôle central. Avec son appareil photo, Modotti a capturé les paysages et les gens du Mexique, en se concentrant sur les femmes, le folklore et l'art religieux. Son travail photographique brut la positionne fermement comme une figure centrale dans le monde de la photographie moderniste. Cependant, l'histoire de Modotti dépasse largement le cadre artistique. Son attachement aux idéaux révolutionnaires l'a poussée à se placer à l'avant-garde du changement social. Après s'être installée à Moscou et avoir rejoint le Parti communiste de l'Union soviétique, elle abandonne complètement la photographie en 1931 pour se consacrer à la politique. Modotti est décédée en 1942 à l'âge de 45 ans. Pendant des décennies après sa mort, son talent a été éclipsé par des mystères et l'absence d'informations biographiques. Cela a fait de sa vie une légende.
L'exposition rassemble près de 250 tirages anciens prêtés par neuf grandes institutions internationales et par divers prêteurs et collections privés, y compris des magazines illustrés et des œuvres originales de photographes du cercle proche de Modotti, tels qu'Edward Weston.
Histoires inédites d'icônes inconnues
L'exposition Tina Modotti est la troisième d'une série dans laquelle Foam offre une plateforme aux histoires inédites d'icônes inconnues. Comme Ernest Cole et Ara Güler au début de l'année, Foam choisit d'aborder l'histoire sous un angle différent en offrant une tribune à des artistes qui ont été négligés ou oubliés dans l'histoire de la photographie. Pendant la majeure partie de sa vie et par la suite, le travail de Tina Modotti a été éclipsé par l'influent et célèbre photographe Edward Weston, qui l'avait initiée à la photographie. Des recherches plus récentes ont montré que les photographies de Weston et de Modotti ont souvent été difficiles à distinguer les unes des autres, attribuant parfois à tort une photographie au célèbre Weston. Avec cette exposition, Foam offre à Tina Modotti une scène où elle est reconnue comme l'une des artistes les plus dévouées et les plus remarquables de son temps.

Storie inedite di icone sconosciute
La mostra su Tina Modotti è la terza di una serie in cui Foam offre una piattaforma a storie inedite di icone sconosciute. Come Ernest Cole e Ara Güler all'inizio di quest'anno, Foam sceglie di guardare alla storia da una prospettiva diversa, offrendo una piattaforma ad artisti che sono stati trascurati o dimenticati dalla storia della fotografia. Per la maggior parte della sua vita e dopo, il lavoro di Tina Modotti è stato messo in ombra dall'influente e famoso fotografo Edward Weston, che l'aveva introdotta nel campo della fotografia. Born in Italy, Modotti's journey led her to the epicenter of early 20th-century art and politics, from her early days as a silent film actress in Hollywood to her connections within the Mexican art movements where Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera played a central role. With her camera, Modotti captured the sights and people of Mexico, focusing on women, folklore and religious art. Her raw photographic work firmly positions her as a central figure in the world of Modernist photography. However, Modotti's story extends far beyond artistic frameworks. Her connection to revolutionary ideals pushes her to the forefront of social change. After settling in Moscow and joining the Communist Party of the Soviet Union, she gave up photography altogether in 1931 to devote herself to politics. Modotti passed away in 1942 at the age of 45. For decades after her life her talent was overshadowed by mysteries and the absence of biographical information. It turned her life into a legend.
The exhibition brings together close to 250 vintage prints on loan from 9 important international institutions and various private lenders and collections including illustrated magazines and original works by photographers from Modotti’s close circle, such as Edward Weston.
Untold stories by unknown icons
The exhibition Tina Modotti is the third in a series where Foam provides a platform to untold stories by unseen icons. Similar to Ernest Cole and Ara Güler earlier this year, Foam chooses to view history from a different perspective by providing a platform to artists who were overlooked or forgotten within the existing history of photography. For most of her life and after, the work by Tina Modotti was overshadowed by the influential and renowned photographer Edward Weston, who had introduced her to the field of photography. More recent research has found that photography by Weston and Modotti has often been difficult to distinguish from one another, sometimes wrongly assigning the famous Weston to a photograph. With this exhibition Foam provides Tina Modotti a stage to acknowledge her as one of the most dedicated and outstanding artists of her time.
