Arch of Hysteria. Zwischen Wahnsinn und Ekstase

Unter dem Titel Arch of Hysteria: Zwischen Wahnsinn und Ekstase widmet das Museum der Moderne Salzburg dem Motiv der Rückbeuge eine große Themenausstellung mit Werken u. a. von Auguste Rodin, Gustav Klimt, Alfred Kubin, Max Ernst, Louise Bourgeois, VALIE EXPORT und Robert Longo.
Der sogenannte „arc de cercle“, der „große Bogen“, ist mit seiner Ambivalenz zwischen Kontrollverlust und Beherrschung ein verführerisches Motiv, das eine lange Tradition in der Kunst- und Kulturgeschichte hat. Es findet sich einerseits in Darstellungen von Tanz und Akrobatik, andererseits in solchen von physischer oder psychischer Krankheit: Der überstreckte (Frauen-)Körper kann ekstatische Entrückung oder psychotische Gestörtheit ebenso wie virtuose Körperbeherrschung und Expressivität ausdrücken.
Arch of Hysteria ist die erste Ausstellung, die sich ganz auf dieses bild-mächtige Motiv konzentriert. Kunstwerke der letzten rund 100 Jahre aus ver-schiedenen Kontexten zeigen die Vielfalt der Ausdrucksmöglichkeiten, die der Pose innewohnen – bis hin zu ihrer Umwandlung in abstrakte, aber dennoch expressive und unverkennbare Formen. Die Ausstellung beleuchtet die (kunst-)geschichtlichen Wurzeln des Motivs ebenso wie aktuelle Fortschreibungen in Malerei, Zeichnung, Skulptur, Fotografie sowie Video- und Performancekunst; mehrere Arbeiten werden eigens für die Ausstellung konzipiert.

Avec son ambivalence entre perte de contrôle et maîtrise, ce que l'on appelle "l'arc de cercle" est un motif séduisant qui a une longue tradition dans l'histoire de l'art et de la culture. On le retrouve d'une part dans les représentations de la danse et de l'acrobatie, d'autre part dans celles de la maladie physique ou psychique : le corps (de femme) tendu peut exprimer le ravissement extatique ou la perturbation psychotique tout comme la maîtrise virtuose du corps et l'expressivité.
Arch of Hysteria est la première exposition qui se concentre entièrement sur ce motif visuel puissant. Des œuvres d'art des quelque 100 dernières années, issues de différents contextes, montrent la diversité des possibilités d'expression inhérentes à la pose - jusqu'à sa transformation en formes abstraites, mais néanmoins expressives et reconnaissables. L'exposition met en lumière les racines (artistiques) historiques du motif ainsi que ses prolongements actuels dans la peinture, le dessin, la sculpture, la photographie, la vidéo et l'art de la performance ; plusieurs œuvres sont spécialement conçues pour l'exposition.

Con il titolo Arch of Hysteria: Between Madness and Ecstasy (L'arco dell'isteria: tra follia ed estasi), il Museum der Moderne di Salisburgo dedica una grande mostra tematica al motivo della curva all'indietro con opere di Auguste Rodin, Gustav Klimt, Alfred Kubin, Max Ernst, Louise Bourgeois, VALIE EXPORT e Robert Longo, tra gli altri.
Il cosiddetto "arc de cercle", il "grande arco", con la sua ambivalenza tra perdita di controllo e dominio, è un motivo di seduzione che ha una lunga tradizione nella storia dell'arte e della cultura. Si ritrova da un lato nelle rappresentazioni della danza e dell'acrobazia, dall'altro in quelle della malattia fisica o mentale: il corpo (femminile) iperesteso può esprimere un rapimento estatico o uno squilibrio psicotico, così come un controllo e un'espressività virtuosi del corpo.
Arch of Hysteria è la prima mostra interamente dedicata a questo potente motivo pittorico. Opere d'arte degli ultimi 100 anni, provenienti da contesti diversi, mostrano la varietà di possibilità espressive insite nella posa, fino alla sua trasformazione in forme astratte, ma espressive e inconfondibili. L'esposizione illumina le radici storiche (artistiche) del motivo e gli aggiornamenti attuali in pittura, disegno, scultura, fotografia, video e performance art. Diverse opere saranno concepite appositamente per la mostra.

The so-called "arc de cercle", the "great arch", with its ambivalence between loss of control and domination, is a seductive motif that has a long tradition in the history of art and culture. It can be found on the one hand in depictions of dance and acrobatics, and on the other hand in those of physical or mental illness: the overstretched (female) body can express ecstatic rapture or psychotic derangement as well as virtuoso body control and expressiveness.
Arch of Hysteria is the first exhibition to focus entirely on this image-powerful motif. Works of art from the last 100 years from different contexts show the variety of expressive possibilities inherent in the pose - up to its transformation into abstract, yet expressive and unmistakable forms. The exhibition illuminates the (art) historical roots of the motif as well as current updates in painting, drawing, sculpture, photography, and video and performance art; several works are conceived especially for the exhibition.
