Michael Schäfer thematisiert in seinen Fotografien den Umgang mit unseren gegenwärtigen digitalen Bildwelten, die zum Ausgangspunkt, Gegenstand und Material seiner Arbeiten werden. Der Künstler hinterfragt in seinem Werk den Gebrauch von Bildern im Spektrum zwischen Authentizität und Projektion, Realität und Desinformation und verweist damit auf die Macht visueller Rollenspiele und Systeme. In seinen fotografischen Montagen aus medialen Fundstücken und eigenen Fotografien wie seinen Inszenierungen fokussiert der Künstler auf zeitgenössisch relevante Themen. Das Haus am Kleistpark zeigt in der Großen Ausstellungshalle Werkgruppen der letzten Jahre, denen ein konzeptionelles Verständnis von Fotografie zugrunde liegt, welches das reflexive Potential des Mediums im Bedeutungsrahmen der Kunst zeigt.
Für das Projekt „Invasive Links“ (2016-2019) arbeitete Michael Schäfer mit Bildmaterial von LifeLeak.com, einer Plattform, auf der unzensiert Handyvideos bzw. Stills aus Krisensituationen veröffentlicht wurden. Mit Motiven aus dieser Serie inszeniert der Künstler einen eigenen Ausstellungsraum, in dem großformatige Tapeten, ein Sofa, eine Leseecke installiert sind. Er stellt dem Rauschen der Krisenaufnahmen den Stillstand entgegen, montiert Situationen von in unserer Gesellschaft gelebter Normalität in die Bilder hinein. Schäfer erkundet so, welche Inhalte sich durch mediale Bilder in unsere Vorstellungswelt eingeschrieben haben.
2021 entstanden 53 Bilderwürfel, einer pro Woche des Jahres. Jede Seite der Würfel zeigt unterschiedliche Screenshots von weltweiten Krisensituationen. Die Würfel sind jeweils aufgefaltet auf Meeresansichten montiert, die einen weiten Assoziationsraum bieten. Fragen, die der Künstler mit dieser Arbeit stellt, sind: Erreicht uns die Realität hinter den konsumierten Bildern? Inwieweit erfahren wir Bilder im Netz als abstrahiert? Welche Rolle spielen Emotionen und Generalisierungen? Diese und andere Fragen können, sollen in der Ausstellung gestellt werden, in der zahlreiche weitere Arbeiten des Künstlers zu sehen sind.
Michael Schäfer hat an der FH Dortmund und anschließend an der Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst Leipzig in der Klasse von Joachim Brohm Fotografie studiert. Nach seinem Diplom verbrachte er ein Studienjahr an der Simon Fraser University in Kanada. Einer künstlerischen Assistenz an der HGB folgten Lehraufträge an der Hartford Art School, Connecticut, USA und der UdK Berlin. Der Künstler wurde durch zahlreiche Ausstellungen bekannt und betreibt neben seiner eigenen künstlerischen Arbeit den Ausstellungsort „Villa Heike“ in Berlin.
Dans ses photographies, Michael Schäfer aborde le thème de l'utilisation de nos mondes d'images numériques actuels, qui deviennent le point de départ, l'objet et le matériau de ses travaux. Dans son œuvre, l'artiste remet en question l'utilisation des visuels dans le spectre entre authenticité et projection, réalité et désinformation, et renvoie ainsi au pouvoir des jeux de rôles et des systèmes visuels. Dans ses montages photographiques réalisés à partir d'objets trouvés dans les médias et de ses propres photographies, ainsi que dans ses mises en scène, l'artiste se concentre sur des thèmes contemporains pertinents. La Haus am Kleistpark présente dans la grande salle d'exposition des groupes d'œuvres de ces dernières années, sur lesquels repose une compréhension conceptuelle de la photographie qui montre le potentiel réflexif du médium dans le cadre de signification de l'art.
Pour le projet "Invasive Links" (2016-2019), Michael Schäfer a travaillé avec des visuels de LifeLeak.com, une plateforme sur laquelle ont été publiées sans censure des vidéos de téléphones portables ou des arrêts sur image de situations de crise. Avec des motifs de cette série, l'artiste met en scène son propre espace d'exposition, dans lequel sont installés des papiers peints grand format, un canapé, un coin lecture. Il oppose l'immobilité au bruit des prises de vue de crise, monte dans les visuels des situations de normalité vécues dans notre société. Schäfer explore ainsi les contenus qui se sont inscrits dans notre monde imaginaire par le biais des visuels des médias.
En 2021, 53 cubes d'images ont été créés, un par semaine de l'année. Chaque face du cube montre différentes captures d'écran de situations de crise mondiales. Les cubes sont à chaque fois dépliés et montés sur des vues de mer qui offrent un vaste espace d'association. Les questions que l'artiste transmet avec ce travail sont les suivantes : La réalité nous atteint-elle derrière les visuels que nous consommons ? Dans quelle mesure faisons-nous l'expérience de visuels abstraits sur la toile ? Quel rôle jouent les émotions et les généralisations ? Ces questions et d'autres peuvent, doivent être transmises dans l'exposition, où l'on peut voir de nombreux autres travaux de l'artiste.
Michael Schäfer a étudié la photographie à la FH Dortmund, puis à la Hochschule für Grafik und Buchkunst de Leipzig dans la classe de Joachim Brohm. Après son diplôme, il a passé une année d'études à la Simon Fraser University au Canada. Une assistance artistique à la HGB a été suivie de missions d'enseignement à la Hartford Art School, Connecticut, USA et à la UdK Berlin. L'artiste s'est fait connaître par de nombreuses expositions et gère, en plus de son propre travail artistique, le lieu d'exposition "Villa Heike" à Berlin.
Nelle sue fotografie, Michael Schäfer affronta il modo in cui ci rapportiamo ai nostri attuali mondi visivi digitali, che diventano il punto di partenza, il soggetto e il materiale delle sue opere. Nel suo lavoro, l'artista esamina l'uso delle immagini nello spettro tra autenticità e proiezione, realtà e disinformazione, indicando così il potere dei giochi di ruolo e dei sistemi visivi. Nei suoi montaggi fotografici di artefatti mediatici e di proprie fotografie, così come nelle sue messe in scena, l'artista si concentra su temi di rilevanza contemporanea. Nella grande sala espositiva, Haus am Kleistpark presenta gruppi di opere degli ultimi anni che si basano su una concezione concettuale della fotografia che dimostra il potenziale riflessivo del mezzo nel quadro del significato dell'arte.
Per il progetto "Invasive Links" (2016-2019), Michael Schäfer ha lavorato con il materiale fotografico di LifeLeak.com, una piattaforma su cui sono stati pubblicati video e fotogrammi non censurati di telefoni cellulari provenienti da situazioni di crisi. L'artista utilizza i motivi di questa serie per allestire il proprio spazio espositivo, in cui sono installati carta da parati di grande formato, un divano e un angolo lettura. L'artista contrappone il rumore delle immagini di crisi a quello della stasi e inserisce nelle immagini situazioni di normalità vissute nella nostra società. Schäfer esplora così quali contenuti sono stati inscritti nel nostro immaginario attraverso le immagini dei media.
Nel 2021 sono stati creati 53 cubi di immagini, uno per ogni settimana dell'anno. Ogni lato dei cubi mostra diverse immagini di situazioni di crisi globale. I cubi sono montati dispiegati su vedute del mare, che offrono un'ampia gamma di associazioni. Le domande che l'artista si pone con quest'opera sono: La realtà dietro le immagini che consumiamo ci raggiunge? In che misura viviamo le immagini in rete come astratte? Che ruolo hanno le emozioni e le generalizzazioni? Queste e altre domande possono e devono essere poste nella mostra, in cui si possono ammirare numerose altre opere dell'artista.
Michael Schäfer ha studiato fotografia all'Università di Scienze Applicate e Arti di Dortmund e poi all'Accademia di Arti Visive di Lipsia nella classe di Joachim Brohm. Dopo la laurea, ha trascorso un anno di studio alla Simon Fraser University in Canada. Un assistentato artistico presso l'HGB è stato seguito da incarichi di insegnamento presso la Hartford Art School, Connecticut, USA e l'UdK di Berlino. L'artista è stato riconosciuto attraverso numerose mostre e gestisce lo spazio espositivo "Villa Heike" a Berlino, oltre al proprio lavoro artistico.
In his photographs, Michael Schäfer addresses the way we deal with our contemporary digital visual worlds, which become the starting point, subject and material of his works. In his work, the artist questions the use of visuals in the spectrum between authenticity and projection, reality and disinformation, thus pointing to the power of visual role-playing games and systems. In his photographic montages of media finds and his own photographs, as well as his stagings, the artist focuses on contemporary issues. In the large exhibition hall, Haus am Kleistpark is showing groups of works from recent years that are based on a conceptual understanding of photography, which shows the reflective potential of the medium within the framework of art's meaning.
For the project "Invasive Links" (2016-2019), Michael Schäfer worked with visuals from LifeLeak.com, a platform on which uncensored cell phone videos and stills from crisis situations were published. The artist uses motifs from this series to stage his own exhibition space, in which large-format wallpaper, a sofa and a reading corner are installed. He contrasts the noise of the crisis shots with the stillness, mounting situations of normality lived in our society into the visuals. Schäfer thus explores what content has been inscribed into our imagination through media images.
In 2021, 53 picture cubes were created, one for each week of the year. Each side of the cubes shows different screenshots of global crisis situations. The cubes are each mounted unfolded on views of the sea, offering a wide range of associations. The questions the artist poses with this work are: Does the reality behind the visuals we consume reach us? To what extent do we experience visuals on the net as abstracted? What role do emotions and generalizations play? These and other questions can and should be asked in the exhibition, in which numerous other works by the artist can be seen.
Michael Schäfer studied photography at the Dortmund University of Applied Sciences and Arts and then at the Academy of Visual Arts Leipzig in the class of Joachim Brohm. After graduating, he spent a year studying at Simon Fraser University in Canada. An artistic assistantship at the HGB was followed by teaching assignments at the Hartford Art School, Connecticut, USA and the UdK Berlin. The artist became known through numerous exhibitions and runs the exhibition space "Villa Heike" in Berlin alongside his own artistic work.
