Die Einzelausstellung mit dem Titel ‘14 Spells (to save your life)‘ zeigt 13 grossformatige unikale Fotografien sowie eine Gruppierung von Polaroid Vergrösserungen, die teilweise mit Handmalerei verziert wurden und während ihrer Auszeit in der schottischen Wildnis und in New York City im Sommer 2023 entstanden sind. In Verbindung mit ihrem weltbekannten Stil des Surrealismus, der Mythologie und der Erotik ist dies eine Rückkehr zu ihren frühen Werken und Einflüssen als junge Frau in Australien am Anfang ihrer Karriere, die sie schnell zu einer der führenden Modefotografinnen ihrer Zeit machen sollte. Seit dem Beginn ihrer Partnerschaft mit der Christophe Guye Galerie in 2018 hatte die Künstlerin ihre erste Soloausstellung ‘LANDED‘ in Zürich und hat seitdem an mehreren Gruppenausstellungen teilgenommen. Eine spezielle Publikation wird die neue Ausstellung begleiten.
Nach einem turbulenten und introspektiven Jahr verbrachte Summerton einige Zeit damit, allein zu arbeiten, während sie ihre ersten Bilder, die sie als aufstrebende Künstlerin schuf, wieder aufgriff und reflektierte. Diese intime Auseinandersetzung mit ihrer Vergangenheit, Gegenwart und Zukunft brachte sie auf einer viel tieferen Ebene wieder mit ihren ursprünglichen Impulsen in Verbindung. ‘Die Kunst zu nutzen, um sich selbst zu verstehen, ist der Schlüssel‘, erklärt sie. ‘Deine Arbeit wird dich immer beschützen.‘
Der meditativen Essenz, die dieser neuen Serie zugrunde liegt, fehlt es keineswegs an der verblüffenden Schönheit, der schalkhaften Wirkung und dem visuellen Reichtum, für die Summerton bekannt ist; diese Bilder entfalten sich und atmen mit neu entdeckter Sensibilität, Verletzlichkeit und Humor. Beeinflusst von der Kunst und dem Leben weiblicher Surrealisten wie Leonora Carrington, Vali Myers und Remedios Varo, ist das Werk von einer stärkeren Sensibilität für ihren Körper, ihre inneren Charaktere und das Selbst, das sie nie gelebt hat, durchdrungen. Die Verbindung mit den vitalen, zeitlosen Kräften der Natur war ein grundlegender Impuls. Auslöser dafür war ein früherer Besuch in Schottland auf einem alten Landgut, das von Bäumen, Flüssen und Wasserfällen umgeben war. Auf der Suche nach Abgeschiedenheit kehrte Summerton dorthin zurück, um Ruhe, Freiheit, Einssein und "einen Zugang zur Mutter Natur" zu finden. Indem sie all diese Ideen zusammenbrachte, schuf sie eine folkloristische Welt, die sie selbst entworfen hat und die den Betrachter mit einer tiefgründigen, instinktiven Anziehungskraft in ihren Bann zieht.
Summerton, die abwechselnd einen Latex-Body, eine Schwangerschaftsprothese, rote Absätze, ein weisses Kleid oder einen schwarzen Hut trägt, nähert sich ihrer eigenen Darstellung als Symbol für diese starken emotionalen Zustände und die Selbstbefragung, die Fragen über Liebe, Geburt, Selbstsein, den Schatten, Mutterschaft, das Weibliche, den Tod und das Mystische aufwirft.’
L'exposition individuelle, intitulée '14 Spells (to save your life)', présente 13 photographies uniques grand format ainsi qu'un regroupement d'agrandissements Polaroid, dont certains ont été décorés de peinture à la main, réalisés lors de son séjour dans la nature sauvage écossaise et à New York durant l'été 2023. Associé à son style mondialement connu de surréalisme, de mythologie et d'érotisme, c'est un retour à ses premières œuvres et influences de jeune femme en Australie au début de sa carrière, qui fera rapidement d'elle l'une des principales photographes de mode de son époque. Depuis le début de son partenariat avec la galerie Christophe Guye en 2018, l'artiste a eu sa première exposition solo 'LANDED' à Zurich et a depuis participé à plusieurs expositions collectives. Une publication spéciale accompagnera cette nouvelle exposition.
Après une année turbulente et introspective, Summerton a passé du temps à travailler seule, tout en reprenant et en réfléchissant aux premiers visuels qu'elle a créés en tant qu'artiste émergente. Cette exploration intime de son passé, de son présent et de son avenir l'a reconnectée à ses pulsions originelles à un niveau beaucoup plus profond. 'Utiliser l'art pour se comprendre soi-même est la clé', explique-t-elle, 'votre travail vous protégera toujours'.
L'essence méditative qui sous-tend cette nouvelle série ne manque en rien de la beauté stupéfiante, de l'effet espiègle et de la richesse visuelle qui ont fait la réputation de Summerton ; ces visuels se déploient et respirent avec une sensibilité, une vulnérabilité et un humour redécouverts. Influencée par l'art et la vie de surréalistes féminins tels que Leonora Carrington, Vali Myers et Remedios Varo, son œuvre est imprégnée d'une plus grande sensibilité à son corps, à ses personnages intérieurs et au soi qu'elle n'a jamais vécu. La connexion avec les forces vitales et intemporelles de la nature a été une impulsion fondamentale. L'élément déclencheur a été une visite antérieure en Écosse dans un vieux domaine entouré d'arbres, de rivières et de cascades. En quête d'isolement, Summerton y est retournée pour trouver le calme, la liberté, l'unité et "un accès à la mère nature". En rassemblant toutes ces idées, elle a créé un univers folklorique qu'elle a elle-même conçu et qui captive le spectateur par un attrait profond et instinctif.
Summerton, qui porte tour à tour un body en latex, une prothèse de grossesse, des talons rouges, une robe blanche ou un chapeau noir, approche sa propre représentation comme un symbole de ces états émotionnels forts et de ce questionnement sur soi qui soulève des questions sur l'amour, la naissance, l'être soi, l'ombre, la maternité, le féminin, la mort et le mystique'.

The solo exhibition, entitled “14 Spells (to save your life),” features 13 large-format unique photographs (as well as a grouping of Polaroid enlargements), embellisdhed with ink, watercolour and oil pastels, made during an escape to the Scottish wilderness and in New York City in the summer of 2023. Mixed in with her world-renowned signature style of surrealism, mythology, and the erotic is a return to her early creations and influences as a young woman in Australia just beginning to embark on a career that would quickly identify her as one of the leading fashion photographers of her time. Summerton has participated in one solo exhibition, “LANDED” in 2019 at Christophe Guye Galerie since their partnership began the previous year, including other group shows. A special publication will accompany this event.
Following a tumultuous and introspective year, Summerton spent a period of time working alone while revisiting and reflecting on the earliest imagery she created as an emerging talent. This intimate inquiry into her past, present, and future reconnected her to her original impulses on a much deeper level. “Using your art to understand yourself is key,” she explains. “Your work will always save you.”
The meditative essence underpinning this new series lacks none of the startling beauty, mischievous quality, and visual richness for which Summerton is known; these images expand and breathe with newfound awareness, vulnerability, and humor. Much influenced by the art and lives of female Surrealists such as Leonora Carrington, Vali Myers, and Remedios Varo, the work is infused with a stronger sensibility of her body, her inner characters, and the selves she has never lived. Communing with the vital, timeless energies of nature was a primal draw. This was sparked by a previous visit to Scotland, to an ancient estate surrounded by trees, rivers, and waterfalls. Seeking remoteness, Summerton returned there to find quiet, freedom, oneness, “an entrance to the Earth.” Gathering all these ideas together, she has produced a folkloric world strictly of her own design, pulling viewers in with a profound instinctive allure.
In turns wearing a latex bodysuit, a prosthetic pregnancy bump, red heels, a white dress, and a black hat, Summerton approaches her own representation as symbolic of these potent emotional states and self-interrogation, raising questions about love, birth, selfhood, the shadow, motherhood, the feminine, death, and the mystical.’
