Die Galerie Le Château d'Eau präsentiert Arno Brigons fotografische Reise "Us", die er von 2018 bis 2022 mit seiner Familie in die zwölf gleichnamigen Städte der historischen Hauptstädte Europas und durch die USA unternommen hat.
Von diesem Roadtrip nimmt er 60 Farb- und NB-Silberfotografien auf abgelaufenen Filmen mit, um diese Ausstellung zu realisieren.
Amsterdam, Kopenhagen, Berlin, Lissabon, London, Dublin, Brüssel, Luxemburg, Rom, Athen, Paris, Madrid. Anders als es diese Liste der Hauptstädte vermuten lassen könnte, hat Arno Brignon keine große Zickzack-Tour durch Europa unternommen. Er ist ab 2018 in die Vereinigten Staaten gereist und hat eine unterhaltsame Route aufgebaut, die ihn in drei Etappen in zwölf Städte führte, die nach europäischen Hauptstädten benannt sind.
Er ist nicht der Erste, der sich auf einen Roadtrip als Echo auf Robert Frank, Jack Kerouac und Wim Wenders - unter anderem - begibt. Die Vereinigten Staaten sind sicherlich das Land, das weltweit am meisten fotografiert wurde. Zunächst von den Amerikanern selbst, die die Fotografie in einem Land, das damals keine bedeutende Bildtradition hatte, zur wichtigsten Kunstform erhoben, und dann von Tausenden von Ausländern, die von der Weite der Räume, ihrer Vielfalt, den Bevölkerungskontrasten und dem geschickt aufgebauten Mythos einer Nation, die die Welt beherrschen will, angezogen wurden.
Arno Brignon hat diese amerikanische Reise auf eine einzigartige Weise unternommen. Die Fotografie ist eine einsame Übung par excellence, aber um den Zusammenhalt einer Familie zu wahren, die durch seine wiederholte Abwesenheit erschüttert wurde, reiste er mit Caroline und Josephine, seiner Lebensgefährtin und seiner Tochter, ab. Keine einfache Aufgabe, erst recht nicht, wenn man seine Legitimität in Frage stellt und nicht immer weiß, ob man in Amerika Urlaub macht oder als Fotograf unterwegs ist. Wie er es schön formuliert: "Ich muss lernen, miteinander zu spielen".
In diesem Land, in dem es "schwierig ist, nicht von der Geschichte der Fotografie eingeholt zu werden", hat er, indem er Schwarzweiß- und Farbfotografien mischt und es schafft, Familienfotos und Reiseeindrücke nebeneinander zu stellen, eine ebenso literarische wie filmische Erzählung aufgebaut, eine Erzählung, die eine Erfahrung ebenso wiedergibt wie sie ein fiktionales Amerika erfindet. Landschaften und Porträts, Momente der Begegnung, Straßen und Momente des Lichts fassen zusammen, was natürlich nicht den Anspruch hat, ein Porträt der neuen Welt zu sein. Arno Brignon lädt uns sowohl dazu ein, eine intime und subjektive Reise zu teilen, die ihre Wurzeln in seiner persönlichen Geschichte hat, als auch dazu, die großen amerikanischen Städte zu vergessen. Und schließlich: "Diese Städte im Inneren, banal, intim, zerbrechlich, von Leere und Verschwinden bedroht, sind letztlich nur eine Metapher. Das Subjekt ist nicht draußen, sondern in mir. Das Subjekt ist wir".
La Galerie Le Château d’Eau présente le voyage photographique d’Arno Brigon « Us » effectué de 2018 à 2022 avec sa famille dans les douze villes éponymes des capitales historiques Européennes, à travers les Etats-Unis.
De ce road trip, il retiendra 60 photographies couleur et NB argentiques sur films périmés, pour réaliser cette exposition.
Amsterdam, Copenhagen, Berlin, Lisbon, London, Dublin, Brussels, Luxemburg, Rome, Athens, Paris, Madrid. Contrairement à ce que pourrait laisser penser cette liste de villes capitales, Arno Brignon n’a pas effectué un grand tour d’Europe en zigzags. Il est parti, à partir de 2018, pour les États-Unis, en construisant un parcours amusé qui, en trois étapes, l’a amené dans douze villes portant des noms de capitales européennes.
Il n’est pas le premier à se lancer dans un road trip en écho à Robert Frank, Jack Kerouac et Wim Wenders – entre autres. Les États-Unis sont certainement le pays qui a été le plus photographié au monde. D’abord par les américains eux-mêmes qui ont porté la photographie au rang d’art majeur dans un pays qui n’avait alors aucune tradition picturale importante, puis par des milliers d’étrangers attirés par l’immensité des espaces, leur diversité, les contrastes de population et le mythe, savamment construit, d’une nation voulant dominer le monde.
Arno Brignon a fait ce parcours américain d’une façon singulière. La photographie est un exercice solitaire par excellence mais, pour préserver la cohésion d’une famille ébranlée par ses absences répétées, il est parti avec Caroline et Joséphine, sa compagne et sa fille. Pas simple, encore moins lorsque l’on s’interroge sur sa légitimité et que l’on ne sait pas toujours si l’on est en Amérique en vacances ou en tant que photographe. Comme il le dit joliment : « Il faut que j’apprenne à jouer ensemble ».
Dans ce pays où il est « difficile de ne pas être rattrapé par l’histoire de la photographie », il a, en mêlant noir et blanc et couleur, en réussissant à faire cohabiter photographies de famille et impressions de voyage, construit un récit aussi littéraire que cinématographique, une narration qui restitue une expérience autant qu’elle invente une Amérique de fiction. Paysages et portraits, moments de rencontres, routes et instants de lumière résument ce qui n’a évidemment pas la prétention d’être un portrait du nouveau monde. Arno Brignon nous invite autant à partager un voyage intime et subjectif qui puise ses racines dans son histoire personnelle qu’à oublier les grandes cités américaines. Et, au final, « Ces villes de l’intérieur, banales, intimes, fragiles, menacées par le vide et la disparition, ne sont finalement qu’une métaphore. Le sujet n’est pas dehors, mais en moi. Le sujet est nous. »

Contrariamente a quanto potrebbe far pensare questo elenco di capitali, Arno Brignon non ha intrapreso un tour a zig zag dell'Europa. A partire dal 2018 è partito per gli Stati Uniti, costruendo un divertente itinerario che, in tre tappe, lo ha portato in dodici città che portano i nomi di capitali europee.
Non è il primo a intraprendere un viaggio on the road che riecheggia Robert Frank, Jack Kerouac e Wim Wenders - tra gli altri. Gli Stati Uniti sono certamente il Paese più fotografato al mondo. In primo luogo dagli americani stessi, che hanno elevato la fotografia al rango di una forma d'arte importante in un Paese che all'epoca non aveva una grande tradizione pittorica, e poi da migliaia di stranieri attratti dall'immensità degli spazi, dalla loro diversità, dai contrasti tra le popolazioni e dal mito, abilmente costruito, di una nazione intenzionata a dominare il mondo.
Arno Brignon ha compiuto questo viaggio americano in modo singolare. La fotografia è un'attività solitaria per eccellenza, ma per preservare la coesione di una famiglia scossa dalle sue ripetute assenze, è partito con Caroline e Joséphine, la sua compagna e la figlia. Non è facile, soprattutto quando si mette in dubbio la propria legittimità e non si sa sempre se si è in America in vacanza o come fotografo. Come dice lui stesso: "Devo imparare a giocare insieme".
In un Paese in cui è "difficile non farsi coinvolgere dalla storia della fotografia", egli ha costruito, mescolando bianco e nero e colore, e riuscendo a far convivere fotografie di famiglia e impressioni di viaggio, una narrazione tanto letteraria quanto cinematografica, una narrazione che ricrea un'esperienza tanto quanto inventa un'America immaginaria. Paesaggi e ritratti, momenti di incontro, strade e momenti di luce riassumono quello che chiaramente non vuole essere un ritratto del Nuovo Mondo. Arno Brignon ci invita a condividere un viaggio intimo e soggettivo che affonda le radici nella sua storia personale, così come a dimenticare le grandi città americane. E, alla fine, "queste città dell'entroterra, banali, intime, fragili, minacciate dal vuoto e dalla scomparsa, non sono altro che una metafora. Il soggetto non è fuori, ma dentro di me. Il soggetto siamo noi.
Galerie Le Château d'Eau presents Arno Brigon's photographic journey "Us", made from 2018 to 2022 with his family in the twelve eponymous cities of Europe's historic capitals, across the United States.
From this road trip, he will retain 60 color photographs and NB silver on out-of-date film, to create this exhibition.

Contrary to what this list of capital cities might suggest, Arno Brignon did not embark on a zigzag tour of Europe. Starting in 2018, he set off for the United States, constructing an amusing itinerary that, in three stages, took him to twelve cities bearing the names of European capitals.
He's not the first to embark on a road trip echoing Robert Frank, Jack Kerouac and Wim Wenders - among others. The United States is certainly the most photographed country in the world. Firstly by the Americans themselves, who elevated photography to the status of a major art form in a country that had no major pictorial tradition at the time, and then by thousands of foreigners attracted by the immensity of the spaces, their diversity, the contrasts in population and the myth, skilfully constructed, of a nation bent on world domination.
Arno Brignon has made this American journey in a singular way. Photography is a solitary exercise par excellence, but to preserve the cohesion of a family shaken by his repeated absences, he left with Caroline and Joséphine, his partner and daughter. It's not easy, especially when you're questioning your legitimacy and not always sure whether you're in America on vacation or as a photographer. As he puts it, "I have to learn to play together".
In this country, where it's "hard not to be caught up in the history of photography", he has, by mixing black & white and color, and by successfully combining family photographs and travel impressions, constructed a narrative that is as literary as it is cinematographic, a narrative that recounts an experience as much as it invents a fictional America. Landscapes and portraits, moments of encounters, roads and moments of light sum up what is obviously not intended to be a portrait of the New World. Arno Brignon invites us to share an intimate, subjective journey rooted in his personal history, as much as to forget the great American cities. And, in the end, "These inland cities, banal, intimate, fragile, threatened by emptiness and disappearance, are ultimately no more than a metaphor. The subject is not outside, but inside me. The subject is us."
