Europe Matters: visioni di un'identità inquieta
Für die Ausgabe 2023 hat sich die künstlerische Leitung des Festivals - bestehend aus Tim Clark, Walter Guadagnini und Luce Lebart - mit der Idee von Europa und den Völkern, die es bewohnen und ausmachen, auseinandergesetzt.
Kann man sagen, dass es eine gemeinsame Identität gibt? Inwieweit formen oder festigen Mythos und Erinnerung unser Gefühl der kollektiven Zugehörigkeit? Und wie trägt die zeitgenössische Fotografie dazu bei, auf die Herausforderungen und Situationen zu reagieren, die die europäischen Bürger erleben?
In Anbetracht des Verhältnisses zwischen nationaler Identität und demokratischer Gemeinschaft sowie der multikulturellen Gegebenheiten in den einzelnen europäischen Ländern befinden wir uns im Spannungsfeld zwischen der Zugehörigkeit zu verschiedenen Nationen und einer kulturell homogenen Bevölkerung. Wie Peter Gowan und Perry Anderson geschrieben haben, "drohen sich die Imperien der Vergangenheit in postmoderne Moore aufzulösen, die nur noch von der Welle des Marktes überspült werden "*. Außerdem wird Europa nicht mehr als der Ort gesehen, an dem Geschichte geschrieben wird.
Wie komplex und schwierig es ist, Europa als Gemeinschaft zu begreifen, ist Gegenstand einer Reihe von Fotoprojekten, die sich in erster Linie auf Menschen und Identitäten konzentrieren, um die Politik der Ein- und Ausgrenzung und das Fortbestehen von Vorstellungen von Geschichte und Kultur in der Gegenwart zu erzählen.
Die Projekte, die Teil dieser Ausgabe sind, werden unter anderem die Begriffe Zugehörigkeit und Solidarität sowie Zerbrechlichkeit und Angst untersuchen: werden wir ein demokratisierendes Porträt des Vereinigten Königreichs in unruhigen Zeiten sehen; Menschenrechtsproteste in Polen; fiktionale Dokumentarfilme, die in deutschen Kleinstädten spielen und historische Gegebenheiten aufzeigen; das Leben der afrikanischen Diaspora, die die koloniale Vergangenheit Portugals heraufbeschwört; Sammler von essbaren Wildpflanzen am Rande von Paris, die unsere Wertschätzung für die Natur, aber auch unsere Abhängigkeit von ihr radikal neu erfinden; und schließlich visuelle Liebesbriefe an die Stadt Odessa.
Die Identitäten bleiben, aber die Geister sind unruhig.
Pour l'édition 2023, la direction artistique du Festival - composée de Tim Clark, Walter Guadagnini et Luce Lebart - a raisonné sur l'idée de l'Europe et des peuples qui l'habitent et la composent.
Peut-on dire qu'il existe une identité commune ? Dans quelle mesure le mythe et la mémoire façonnent-ils ou consolident-ils notre sentiment d'appartenance collective ? Et comment la photographie contemporaine contribue-t-elle à répondre aux défis et aux situations vécus par les citoyens européens ?
Compte tenu de la relation entre l'identité nationale et la communauté démocratique, ainsi que des réalités multiculturelles des différents pays européens, nous sommes pris entre l'appartenance à des nations distinctes et une population culturellement homogène. Comme l'ont écrit Peter Gowan et Perry Anderson, "les empires du passé menacent de se dissoudre dans des landes postmodernes balayées uniquement par la vague du marché "*. En outre, l'Europe n'est plus considérée comme le lieu d'où s'écrit l'histoire.
La complexité et la difficulté de saisir la nature de l'Europe en tant que communauté est le sujet d'une série de projets photographiques qui se concentrent principalement sur les personnes et les identités, pour raconter les politiques d'inclusion et d'exclusion et la persistance des idées d'histoire et de culture dans le moment présent.
Les projets qui feront partie de cette édition s'intéresseront, entre autres, aux notions d'appartenance et de solidarité, ainsi qu'à celles de fragilité et d'anxiété : nous verrons un portrait démocratisant du Royaume-Uni en ces temps troublés ; des manifestations en faveur des droits de l'homme en Pologne ; des documentaires fictifs se déroulant dans de petites villes allemandes et illustrant des circonstances historiques ; des vies de la diaspora africaine évoquant le passé colonial au Portugal ; des cueilleurs de plantes sauvages comestibles en bordure de Paris réinventant radicalement notre appréciation de la nature, ainsi que notre dépendance à son égard ; et enfin des lettres d'amour visuelles à la ville d'Odessa.
Les identités demeurent, mais les esprits sont agités.
Per l'edizione 2023 la direzione artistica del Festival - composta da Tim Clark, Walter Guadagnini e Luce Lebart - ha ragionato sull’idea di Europa e dei popoli che la abitano e la compongono.
Possiamo affermare che esiste un’identità comune? In che misura mito e memoria modellano o consolidano il nostro senso di appartenenza collettiva? E in che modo la fotografia contemporanea contribuisce a dare una risposta alle sfide e alle situazioni che vivono i cittadini europei?
Considerando la relazione fra identità nazionale e comunità democratica, così come le realtà multiculturali dei singoli paesi europei, ci troviamo in bilico fra l’appartenere a nazioni distinte e a una popolazione culturalmente omogenea. Come hanno scritto Peter Gowan e Perry Anderson, «gli imperi del passato minacciano di dissolversi in lande postmoderne spazzate solo dall'ondata del mercato». Inoltre, l'Europa non è più considerata il luogo da cui si scrive la storia.
Quanto sia complesso e difficile cogliere la natura dell'Europa come comunità è il tema di una serie di progetti fotografici che si soffermano soprattutto sulle persone e sulle identità, per raccontare le politiche di inclusione ed esclusione e la persistenza delle idee di storia e di cultura nel momento presente.
I progetti che faranno parte di questa edizione indagheranno tra le altre le nozioni di appartenenza e solidarietà, così come quelle di fragilità e inquietudine: si vedranno un ritratto democratizzante del Regno Unito in tempi difficili; le proteste per i diritti umani in Polonia; i documentari immaginari ambientati in piccole cittadine tedesche che mostrano circostanze storiche; vite della diaspora africana che evocano il passato coloniale in Portogallo; raccoglitori di piante selvatiche commestibili ai margini di Parigi che reinventano in maniera radicale la nostra riconoscenza per la natura, così come la nostra dipendenza da essa e infine lettere d'amore visive alla città di Odessa.
Le identità rimangono, ma gli spiriti sono inquieti.
For the 2023 edition, the Festival's artistic direction-composed of Tim Clark, Walter Guadagnini and Luce Lebart-has reasoned about the idea of Europe and the peoples who inhabit and compose it.
Can we say that there is a common identity? To what extent do myth and memory shape or consolidate our sense of collective belonging? And how does contemporary photography contribute to the challenges and situations experienced by European citizens?
Considering the relationship between national identity and democratic community, as well as the multicultural realities of individual European countries, we are caught between belonging to distinct nations and a culturally homogeneous population. As Peter Gowan and Perry Anderson have written, "the empires of the past threaten to dissolve into postmodern moors swept only by the wave of the market. "* Moreover, Europe is no longer seen as the place from which history is written.
How complex and difficult it is to grasp the nature of Europe as a community is the theme of a series of photographic projects that focus primarily on people and identities, to chronicle the politics of inclusion and exclusion and the persistence of ideas of history and culture in the present moment.
The projects that will be part of this edition will investigate notions of belonging and solidarity, as well as those of fragility and disquiet, among others: one will see a democratizing portrait of the United Kingdom in troubled times; human rights protests in Poland; fictional documentaries set in small German towns showing historical circumstances; lives of the African diaspora evoking the colonial past in Portugal; gatherers of wild edible plants on the edge of Paris radically reinventing our appreciation for nature, as well as our dependence on it; and finally visual love letters to the city of Odessa.
Identities remain, but spirits are restless.
