Handel wird seit Menschengedenken getrieben. Auch wenn die Finanzbranche vielleicht den prägenden Handelstyp unserer Zeit hervorgebracht hat, werden noch immer täglich Güter auf der ganzen Welt von Produzierenden zu Endverbraucher*innen transportiert. Die Seidenstraße steht als sagenumwobenes Symbol nicht nur für den Transfer von Handels-, sondern auch von Kulturgütern.
Dagegen weckt die „Neue Seidenstraße“, ein infrakstrukturelles Megaprojekt in unserer globalisierten Welt, wenig romantische Ideen jenseits reiner Marktinteressen. Maßgeblich durch China finanziert und vorangetrieben, verbindet es die Volksrepublik mit ihren Märkten.
Paul Kolling hat sich während eines Stipendienaufenhalts diesem Projekt gewidmet. Entstanden sind mehrere Arbeiten darunter die Installation ‚Break of Gauge‘. In ihr befasst sich der Künstler mit der Komplexität der eurasischen Güterverkehrsnetze zwischen Zhengzhou und Hamburg. Bis auf die wichtigsten Knotenpunkte und Transportzeiten sind wenige Informationen der Zugstrecke bekannt. Kolling versucht diesem Mangel mittels Satellitenbildern aus Datenbanken zu begegnen, die er digital zu einem Panorama der Strecke zusammengefügt hat. Dieses Bildmaterial hat er auf 35mm-Film belichtet. Der 300 Meter lange Film wird durch Motoren quer durch den Raum bewegt und das Bildmaterial über fünf Projektoren projiziert. Bei genauerem Hinsehen sind Verzerrungen und Qualitätsunterschiede im Bildmaterial zu erkennen, die an der scheinbaren Linearität zweifeln lassen und die Darstellung als abstrakte Fiktion der Wirklichkeit ausweisen. Unweigerlich stellt sich die Frage, welche ganz realen – ökonomischen, politischen und sozialen – Auswirkungen derartige Projekte für die globalisierte Welt und die bestehenden Machtverhältnisse mit sich bringen.
Paul Kolling (*1993) ) beschäftigt sich mit infrastrukturellen und ökonomischen Prozessen und deren geopolitischen, ökologischen und sozialen Implikationen. Zusammen mit Paul Seidler und Max Hampshire initiierte Kolling u. a. das Projekt „terra0“, welches mittels Ethereum Blockchain Technologie die Selbstverwaltung eines Waldes organisiert. Kollings Arbeiten und Projekte wurden u. a. bei der transmediale, Ars Electronica, Biennale de Lyon, Furtherfield Gallery, Drugo More, re:publica, Schinkel Pavillon und der Wiener Biennale präsentiert.

Le commerce existe depuis la nuit des temps. Même si le secteur financier a peut-être donné naissance au type de commerce le plus marquant de notre époque, des marchandises sont encore transportées quotidiennement dans le monde entier, des producteurs aux consommateurs finaux. La Route de la Soie, symbole légendaire, n'est pas seulement synonyme de transfert de biens commerciaux, mais aussi de biens culturels.
En revanche, la "nouvelle route de la soie", un méga-projet infra-structurel dans notre monde globalisé, n'éveille guère d'idées romantiques au-delà des purs intérêts du marché. Financée et promue en grande partie par la Chine, elle relie la République populaire à ses marchés.
Paul Kolling s'est consacré à ce projet lors d'un séjour de bourse. Plusieurs travaux ont vu le jour, dont l'installation 'Break of Gauge'. L'artiste s'y penche sur la complexité des réseaux de transport de marchandises eurasiens entre Zhengzhou et Hambourg. Peu d'informations sont connues sur la ligne ferroviaire, à l'exception des principaux nœuds et des temps de transport. Kolling tente de remédier à ce manque au moyen d'images satellites issues de bases de données, qu'il a assemblées numériquement pour former un panorama de la ligne. Il a exposé ces images sur un film de 35 mm. Le film de 300 mètres de long est déplacé à travers la pièce par des moteurs et les images sont projetées par cinq projecteurs. En y regardant de plus près, on constate des distorsions et des différences de qualité dans le matériel d'image qui font douter de l'apparente linéarité et qui montrent que la représentation est une fiction abstraite de la réalité. Inévitablement, la question se transmet de l'impact bien réel - économique, politique et social - de tels projets sur le monde globalisé et les rapports de force existants.
Paul Kolling (*1993) s'intéresse aux processus infrastructurels et économiques et à leurs implications géopolitiques, écologiques et sociales. Avec Paul Seidler et Max Hampshire, Kolling a notamment lancé le projet "terra0", qui organise l'autogestion d'une forêt au moyen de la technologie Ethereum Blockchain. Les travaux et projets de Kolling ont été présentés entre autres à la transmediale, Ars Electronica, Biennale de Lyon, Furtherfield Gallery, Drugo More, re:publica, Schinkel Pavillon et à la Biennale de Vienne.

Il commercio va avanti da tempo immemorabile. Anche se il settore finanziario ha forse creato il tipo di commercio che definisce il nostro tempo, le merci vengono ancora trasportate in tutto il mondo dal produttore al consumatore su base giornaliera. La Via della Seta è un simbolo leggendario non solo per il trasferimento del commercio ma anche dei beni culturali.
Al contrario, la "Nuova Via della Seta", un megaprogetto infrastrutturale nel nostro mondo globalizzato, risveglia poche idee romantiche al di là dei puri interessi di mercato. In gran parte finanziato e guidato dalla Cina, collega la Repubblica Popolare con i suoi mercati.
Paul Kolling si è dedicato a questo progetto durante una borsa di studio. Sono state create diverse opere, tra cui l'installazione "Break of Gauge". In esso l'artista affronta la complessità della rete di trasporto merci eurasiatica tra Zhengzhou e Amburgo. A parte i nodi più importanti e gli orari di trasporto, si conoscono poche informazioni sul percorso del treno. Kolling cerca di ovviare a questa mancanza con immagini satellitari provenienti da banche dati, che ha assemblato digitalmente in un panorama del percorso. Ha esposto questo materiale d'immagine su una pellicola da 35 mm. La pellicola, lunga 300 metri, viene spostata da una parte all'altra della sala grazie a dei motori e il materiale d'immagine viene proiettato tramite cinque proiettori. Uno sguardo più attento rivela distorsioni e differenze di qualità nel materiale dell'immagine che mettono in dubbio l'apparente linearità e identificano la rappresentazione come una finzione astratta della realtà. È inevitabile chiedersi quali effetti reali - economici, politici e sociali - abbiano questi progetti sul mondo globalizzato e sui rapporti di forza esistenti.

Trade has been going on since time immemorial. Even though the financial sector may have created the defining type of trade of our time, goods are still transported around the world from producers to end consumers on a daily basis. The Silk Road, as a legendary symbol, stands not only for the transfer of trade goods, but also for cultural goods.
In contrast, the "New Silk Road," an infra-structural mega-project in our globalized world, does not evoke romantic ideas beyond pure market interests. Largely financed and driven by China, it connects the People's Republic with its markets.
Paul Kolling has dedicated himself to this project during a scholarship. Several works were created, including the installation 'Break of Gauge'. In it, the artist deals with the complexity of the Eurasian freight transport networks between Zhengzhou and Hamburg. Except for the most important junctions and transport times, little information of the train route is known. Kolling attempts to address this deficiency by means of satellite images from databases, which he has digitally assembled into a panorama of the route. He has exposed this image material on 35mm film. The 300-meter-long film is moved across the room by motors and the image material is projected via five projectors. A closer look reveals distortions and differences in quality in the visual material that cast doubt on the apparent linearity and identify the representation as an abstract fiction of reality. Inevitably, the question arises as to the very real - economic, political and social - implications of such projects for the globalized world and the existing power relations.

Together with Paul Seidler and Max Hampshire, Kolling initiated, among others, the project "terra0", which uses Ethereum Blockchain technology to organize the self-management of a forest. Kolling's work and projects have been presented at transmediale, Ars Electronica, Biennale de Lyon, Furtherfield Gallery, Drugo More, re:publica, Schinkel Pavillon, and the Vienna Biennale, among others.
