WEST ist ein Forschungsprojekt, das vom Aufstieg und Niedergang des amerikanischen Jahrhunderts erzählt und die Ursprünge der aktuellen Krise des liberalen Modells und des Westens im Allgemeinen in einem Bogen zwischen dem Beginn des Goldrauschs (1848) und dem Bankrott von Lehman Brothers (2008) untersucht. Das 2014 begonnene WEST besteht aus drei langen Reisen durch einige der Staaten, in denen der Goldrausch stattfand: Kalifornien, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nebraska, Texas, wobei auch angrenzende mexikanische Gebiete einbezogen wurden.
Der Schwerpunkt des gesamten Werks liegt an der Schnittstelle zwischen der besonderen Geologie dieser Region (eine der ältesten geologischen Strukturen der Erde) und den archäologischen Ruinen (Minen, Geisterstädte, Utopien, Komplexe und verlassene Infrastruktur) dieser Jahreszeit, die von einem unbändigen Streben nach unmittelbarem Reichtum angetrieben wird.
Das mit Unterstützung des italienischen Kulturministeriums realisierte WEST wurde als einer der Preisträger der X. Ausgabe des Italian Council (2021) ausgewählt, einem Programm zur internationalen Förderung der italienischen Kunst der Generaldirektion für zeitgenössische Kreativität des Kulturministeriums.
Das Projekt wird vom Museum für zeitgenössische Fotografie in Mailand Cinisello (MUFOCO) präsentiert.

Viele europäische Fotografen sind in die USA gegangen, im Hinterkopf die nicht immer zutreffende, sondern meist nostalgische Lektüre von Robert Franks Amerikaner. Und es gibt unzählige subjektive oder sogar sentimentale Roadmovies, Notizbücher, die von den großen Weiten, den kleinen Städten, den verlorenen Motels am Ende der Welt und den Holzhäusern aus einem anderen Jahrhundert fasziniert sind.
Francesco Jodices Ansatz ist das Gegenteil von all dem. Er betrachtet die Fotografie nicht als Träger von Erinnerungen an eine intime Erfahrung, sondern als Werkzeug im Dienste einer Analyse. Die Analyse folgt einem akribisch festgelegten Weg, der sich auf historische Daten stützt und über einen Zeitraum von 160 Jahren die Entwicklung und den Niedergang der größten Weltmacht abbildet. Diese Zeitspanne liegt zwischen dem Beginn des Goldrauschs im Jahr 1848 und dem spektakulären Zusammenbruch der Lehman Brothers Bank im Jahr 2008, der das gesamte amerikanische Bankensystem und darüber hinaus die ganze Welt in Mitleidenschaft zog.
Francesco Jodice fotografiert und hebt eines der vergessenen Elemente dessen hervor, was die Macht der Vereinigten Staaten ausmachte: eine Ikonografie, oder genauer gesagt, eine Mischung aus Ikonografien, die unter anderem die Naturlandschaft und Hollywood mit der Eroberung des Weltraums verbinden und kombinieren und Mythologien und Macht begründen. Doch heute sagt die amerikanische Landschaft einen Bankrott aus und ist mit Ruinen übersät. Und das, obwohl wir uns immer noch im Land des Königs Geld befinden.
WEST est un projet de recherche qui raconte l’essor et le déclin du siècle américain, en enquêtant sur les origines de la crise actuelle du modèle libéral et, plus généralement, de l’Occident dans un arc compris entre le début de la ruée vers l’or (1848) et la faillite de Lehman Brothers (2008). Commencé en 2014, WEST consiste en trois longs voyages à travers certains des États où la ruée vers l’or a eu lieu : Californie, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, Colorado, Nouveau-Mexique, Nebraska, Texas, avec l’inclusion de zones contiguës mexicaines.
Le point central de l’ensemble de l’oeuvre se trouve au carrefour entre la géologie particulière de cette région (l’une des plus anciennes structures géologiques de la planète) et les ruines archéologiques (mines, villes fantômes, utopies, complexes et infrastructures abandonnées) de cette saison animée par une quête irrépressible de richesses immédiates.
Réalisé avec le soutien du Ministère de la Culture italien, WEST a été sélectionné parmi les lauréats de la Xème édition de l’Italian Council (2021) un programme de promotion internationale de l’art italien de la Direction générale de la créativité contemporaine du ministère de la Culture.

Beaucoup de photographes européens sont partis pour les États-Unis avec en tête des lectures, pas toujours justes mais la plupart du temps nostalgiques, des Américains de Robert Frank. Et l’on ne compte plus les road movies subjectifs voire sentimentaux, carnets de notes fascinés par les grands espaces, les petites villes, les motels perdus au bout du monde et les maisons en bois venues d’un autre siècle.
L’approche de Francesco Jodice est à l’opposé de tout cela. Elle ne considère pas la photographie comme porteuse des souvenirs d’une expérience intime mais comme outil au service d’une analyse. Cette dernière se déroule selon un parcours méticuleusement établi qui se fonde sur des données historiques et va permettre de lire, sur une durée de 160 années l’évolution et le déclin de la plus grande puissance mondiale. Cette durée temporelle est celle qui sépare le début de la ruée vers l’or en 1848 de la faillite spectaculaire de la banque Lehman Brothers en 2008 qui affecta tout le système bancaire américain, et au-delà mondial.
Francesco Jodice photographie et met en évidence un des éléments oubliés de ce qui a fait la puissance des États-Unis : une iconographie, ou plus justement un mélange d’iconographies qui associent et combinent le paysage naturel et Hollywood à la conquête de l’espace, entre autres, et fondent des mythologies et un pouvoir. Mais aujourd’hui le paysage américain dit une faillite et est jonché de ruines. Alors que nous sommes toujours au pays de l’argent roi.
WEST è un progetto di ricerca che racconta la storia dell'ascesa e del declino del secolo americano, indagando le origini dell'attuale crisi del modello liberale e, più in generale, dell'Occidente in un arco di tempo compreso tra l'inizio della corsa all'oro (1848) e il fallimento di Lehman Brothers (2008). Iniziato nel 2014, WEST consiste in tre lunghi viaggi attraverso alcuni degli Stati in cui si svolse la Corsa all'Oro: California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nebraska, Texas, con l'inclusione di aree messicane contigue.
Il fulcro dell'intera opera è l'incrocio tra la particolare geologia di questa regione (una delle strutture geologiche più antiche del pianeta) e le rovine archeologiche (miniere, città fantasma, utopie, complessi e infrastrutture abbandonate) di questa stagione guidata da un'irrefrenabile ricerca di ricchezza immediata.
Realizzato con il sostegno del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali, WEST è stato selezionato come uno dei vincitori della decima edizione dell'Italian Council (2021), programma di promozione internazionale dell'arte italiana della Direzione Generale per la Creatività Contemporanea del Ministero per i Beni e le Attività Culturali.

Molti fotografi europei sono partiti per gli Stati Uniti con letture, non sempre accurate ma il più delle volte nostalgiche, degli americani di Robert Frank. E ci sono innumerevoli road movie soggettivi e persino sentimentali, taccuini affascinati da grandi spazi aperti, piccole città, motel sperduti alla fine del mondo e case di legno di un altro secolo.
L'approccio di Francesco Jodice è l'opposto di tutto questo. Non considera la fotografia come portatrice di ricordi di un'esperienza intima, ma come strumento di analisi. Questa analisi segue un percorso meticolosamente stabilito, basato su dati storici, che ci permette di leggere l'evoluzione e il declino della più grande potenza mondiale in un periodo di 160 anni. Questo arco di tempo è quello che separa l'inizio della corsa all'oro nel 1848 dallo spettacolare fallimento della banca Lehman Brothers nel 2008, che ha colpito l'intero sistema bancario americano e non solo.
Francesco Jodice fotografa e mette in luce uno degli elementi dimenticati di ciò che ha reso potenti gli Stati Uniti: un'iconografia, o più precisamente una miscela di iconografie che associano e combinano il paesaggio naturale e Hollywood con la conquista dello spazio, tra l'altro, e fondano mitologie e potere. Ma oggi il paesaggio americano dice bancarotta ed è disseminato di rovine. Mentre siamo ancora nella terra del re del denaro.
WEST is a research project that tells the story of the rise and fall of the American century, investigating the origins of the current crisis of the liberal model and, more broadly, of the West in an arc between the beginning of the Gold Rush (1848) and the bankruptcy of Lehman Brothers (2008). Begun in 2014, WEST consists of three long journeys through some of the states where the Gold Rush took place-California, Nevada, Utah, Wyoming, Arizona, Colorado, New Mexico, Nebraska, Texas, with the inclusion of contiguous Mexican areas.
The focus of the entire work lies at the crossroads between the particular geology of this region (one of the oldest geological structures on the planet) and the archaeological ruins (mines, ghost towns, utopias, complexes and abandoned infrastructures) of this season driven by an irrepressible quest for immediate wealth.
Produced with the support of the Italian Ministry of Culture, WEST has been selected as one of the winners of the 10th edition of the Italian Council (2021), a program for the international promotion of Italian art of the General Directorate for Contemporary Creativity of the Ministry of Culture.

Many European photographers have left for the United States with in mind readings, not always accurate but most of the time nostalgic, of Robert Frank's Americans. And there are countless subjective and even sentimental road movies, notebooks fascinated by wide open spaces, small towns, motels lost at the end of the world and wooden houses from another century.
Francesco Jodice's approach is the opposite of all this. He does not consider photography as the bearer of memories of an intimate experience but as a tool at the service of an analysis. The latter unfolds according to a meticulously established path that is based on historical data and will allow us to read, over a period of 160 years, the evolution and decline of the greatest world power. This time span is the one that separates the beginning of the gold rush in 1848 from the spectacular bankruptcy of the Lehman Brothers bank in 2008, which affected the entire American banking system, and beyond.
Francesco Jodice photographs and highlights one of the forgotten elements of what made the power of the United States: an iconography, or more precisely a mixture of iconographies that associate and combine the natural landscape and Hollywood with the conquest of space, among others, and found mythologies and power. But today the American landscape says bankruptcy and is littered with ruins. While we are still in the land of the money king.
