Das MEP - Maison Européenne de la Photographie präsentiert die erste Retrospektive der niederländischen Künstlerin Viviane Sassen in Frankreich. Die Ausstellung umfasst mehr als 200 Werke und zeichnet die 30-jährige Produktion eines proteiformen Werks nach, in dem die Fotografie mit der Collage, der Malerei und dem Video vereint ist.
Die Ausstellung erstreckt sich über die beiden Hauptebenen des MEP und umfasst ihre ikonischen Serien, darunter "Umbra", "Parasomnia", "Flamboya" und "Roxane", unveröffentlichte Archive, ihre Werke in Mischtechniken aus Fotoabzügen, Malerei, Collagen und Videos sowie eine Auswahl ihrer Modefotografien. Die Ausstellung soll den kreativen Prozess von Viviane Sassen beleuchten und dabei zwei Hauptachsen verfolgen: die ständige Suche nach Erneuerung der fotografischen Formen und die Bedeutung der Intimsphäre in ihrem Werk. Bei Sassen ist die Fotografie nicht einfach nur eine Oberfläche, sondern ein offener Ort, an dem sie ihre Träume, Wünsche und Ängste mit der greifbaren Realität der Welt zusammenbringt.
Nachdem sie einige Jahre Mode studiert hatte, wandte sich Viviane Sassen schnell der Fotografie zu, wo sie sich an der Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU) ausbilden ließ. Nach Abschluss ihres Studiums wechselte sie zwischen persönlichen Projekten und kommerziellen Aufträgen. Ihr fotografischer Stil - mit seinen intensiven Farben, dem grafischen Spiel mit Licht und Schatten und dem einzigartigen Blick auf den Körper - fand schnell Anklang. Sassen erlangte internationales Ansehen, sowohl in der Modebranche als auch in kulturellen Einrichtungen.
Anlässlich dieser Ausstellung wird ein über 400 Seiten starkes Buch mit Essays und Fotografien im Prestel-Verlag und in Zusammenarbeit mit der MEP veröffentlicht. Das Buch wird von der niederländischen Grafikdesignerin Irma Boom gestaltet.

La MEP – Maison Européenne de la Photographie présente la première rétrospective en France de l’artiste néerlandaise Viviane Sassen. L'exposition réunit plus de 200 créations et retrace 30 ans de production d’une œuvre protéiforme où la photographie côtoie le collage, la peinture et la vidéo.
Déployée sur les deux principaux niveaux de la MEP, cette exposition réunit ses séries iconiques, parmi lesquelles « Umbra », « Parasomnia », « Flamboya » ou « Roxane », des archives inédites, ses oeuvres aux techniques mixtes mêlant tirages photographiques, peintures, collages et vidéos ainsi qu’une sélection de ses photographies de mode. L'exposition ambitionne d’éclairer le processus créatif de Viviane Sassen en suivant deux grands axes : la recherche constante de renouvellement des formes photographiques et l’importance de la sphère intime dans son oeuvre. Chez Sassen, la photographie n’est pas une simple surface mais un lieu ouvert où elle fait cohabiter ses rêves, ses désirs et ses craintes avec la réalité tangible du monde.
Après quelques années passées à étudier la mode, Viviane Sassen se tourne rapidement vers la photographie où elle se forme à la Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU). Dès la fin de ses études, elle alterne entre projets personnels et commandes commerciales. Son style photographique – aux couleurs intenses, aux jeux graphiques sur l’ombre et la lumière ainsi que le regard singulier qu’elle porte sur les corps – est rapidement plébiscité. Sassen acquiert une renommée internationale, aussi bien dans la sphère de la mode qu’au sein des institutions culturelles.
Un ouvrage de plus de 400 pages, mêlant essais et photographies, sera publié à l’occasion de cette exposition aux éditions Prestel et en collaboration avec la MEP. La conception du livre est assurée par la graphiste néerlandaise Irma Boom.

Distribuita sui due livelli principali del MEP, la mostra riunisce le sue serie iconiche, tra cui "Umbra", "Parasomnia", "Flamboya" e "Roxane", oltre ad archivi inediti, opere a tecnica mista che combinano stampe fotografiche, dipinti, collage e video, e una selezione delle sue fotografie di moda. La mostra intende far luce sul processo creativo di Viviane Sassen, concentrandosi su due temi principali: la sua costante ricerca di nuove forme fotografiche e l'importanza della sfera intima nel suo lavoro. Per Sassen, la fotografia non è solo una superficie, ma uno spazio aperto in cui far coesistere i suoi sogni, i suoi desideri e le sue paure con la realtà tangibile del mondo.
Dopo alcuni anni di studi di moda, Viviane Sassen si è rapidamente dedicata alla fotografia, dove si è formata alla Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU). Dalla fine degli studi, alterna progetti personali a commissioni commerciali. The MEP – Maison Européenne de la Photographie – is proud to present the first retrospective in France by Dutch artist Viviane Sassen. Under the title This exhibition, which comprises more than 200 works, reveals over thirty years of multifaceted creation bringing together photography, collage, painting and video.
Taking up the two main floors of the MEP, the exhibition gathers together emblematic series, including "Umbra", "Parasomnia", "Flamboya" and "Roxane", as well as unseen archives, mixed-media works incorporating photography, painting, collage and video, and fashion photography. This exhibition will shed light on Viviane Sassen's creative process by focusing on two main themes: the incessant search for new photographic forms and the importance of intimacy in her work. For Sassen, photography is more than a mere surface: it is an opening onto a place where her dreams, desires and fears co-exist with the world in all its tangible reality.
Initially studying fashion design, Viviane Sassen quickly turned to photography, pursuing her education at the Utrecht School of the Arts (HKU). After completing her studies, she alternated between personal projects and commercial work. Her photographic style – with its saturated colours, interplay of light and shadow and unique portrayals of the human body – was soon in great demand. Viviane Sassen rapidly gained worldwide recognition, both in the fashion industry and in the cultural world.
On the occasion of this exhibition, a 400-page, fully illustrated book comprising several essays and designed by Dutch graphic artist Irma Boom, will be published by Prestel in collaboration with the MEP.
