Ugo Mulas / I graffiti di Saul Steinberg a Milano
1961 schuf Saul Steinberg im Auftrag des Studio BBPR, das die Renovierung der Palazzina Mayer in Mailand leitete, eine außergewöhnliche Graffitodekoration des Atriums. Ein bedeutendes Werk, das auf andere ähnliche Arbeiten des großen Designers und Illustrators in den Vereinigten Staaten im vorangegangenen Jahrzehnt folgte.
Als die Arbeiten abgeschlossen waren, bat Steinberg den jungen Ugo Mulas, das Werk in seiner Gesamtheit und im Detail zu begutachten. Um den Fotografen bei seiner Arbeit zu unterstützen, schrieb der Künstler auch einen kurzen Text, in dem er die Ikonographie und die Bedeutung seines Werks erläuterte, eine Reflexion über das Labyrinth, das mit der Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Mailand beginnt, der Stadt, in der Steinberg vor dem Krieg gelebt hatte. Im Jahr 1997 wurde das Gebäude erneut renoviert und die Graffiti zerstört: Heute sind von diesem großartigen Eingriff nur noch die Fotografien von Ugo Mulas übrig, die sowohl das Dokument des Werks als auch seine Interpretation wiederherstellen können.
Die Ausstellung Ugo Mulas / Saul Steinbergs Graffiti in Mailand, kuratiert vom Ugo Mulas Archiv und Walter Guadagnini, wird vom 14. Februar bis zum 14. April 2024 im Projektraum von CAMERA zu sehen sein und erzählt von diesem Ereignis, indem sie die gesamte Dekoration ausgehend von Mulas' Fotografien neu skaliert. Eine Auswahl von etwa fünfzehn Fotografien - einige alt, andere für diesen Anlass gedruckt - ermöglicht es uns, tief in das Werk dieser beiden großen Vertreter der Kunst des 20. Jahrhunderts einzutauchen, die ikonografische Fantasie von Steinbergian und die poetische Klarheit von Mulas' Auge zu schätzen.
Die Ausstellung wird von einem von Dario Cimorelli Editore herausgegebenen Band begleitet, der von Dario Borso, dem Autor des kritischen Textes und der Recherchen, die die Rekonstruktion dieser einzigartigen Episode der italienischen Nachkriegskultur ermöglichten, herausgegeben wird und die Bilder von Mulas sowie das von Steinberg an den Fotografen gesandte Typoskript enthält.
En 1961, Saul Steinberg réalise une extraordinaire décoration en graffitis de l'atrium de la Palazzina Mayer à Milan, à la demande du Studio BBPR qui en assure la rénovation. Il s'agit d'une œuvre importante, qui fait suite à d'autres travaux similaires réalisés par le grand designer et illustrateur aux États-Unis au cours de la décennie précédente.
Une fois les travaux terminés, Steinberg demande au jeune Ugo Mulas d'observer l'œuvre dans son ensemble et dans ses moindres détails. Pour aider le photographe dans son travail, l'artiste a également rédigé un court texte expliquant l'iconographie et la signification de son œuvre, une réflexion sur le labyrinthe qui commence à la Galleria Vittorio Emanuele de Milan, la ville où Steinberg avait vécu avant la guerre. En 1997, le bâtiment a été à nouveau rénové et les graffitis détruits : aujourd'hui, il ne reste de cette splendide intervention que les photographies d'Ugo Mulas, capables de restituer à la fois le document de l'œuvre et son interprétation.
L'exposition Ugo Mulas / Saul Steinberg's graffiti in Milan, organisée par les Archives Ugo Mulas et Walter Guadagnini, sera présentée dans la Project Room de CAMERA du 14 février au 14 avril 2024 et raconte cet événement, en reproposant à l'échelle toute la décoration à partir des photographies de Mulas. Une sélection d'une quinzaine de photographies - certaines anciennes, d'autres imprimées pour l'occasion - permet d'entrer en profondeur dans l'œuvre de ces deux grands représentants de l'art du XXe siècle, d'apprécier l'imagination iconographique de Steinberg et la lucidité poétique de l'œil de Mulas.
L'exposition sera accompagnée d'un volume publié par Dario Cimorelli Editore, édité par Dario Borso, auteur du texte critique et des recherches qui ont permis de reconstruire cet épisode singulier de la culture italienne d'après-guerre, contenant les images de Mulas et le texte dactylographié envoyé par Steinberg au photographe.

Un lavoro importante, che seguiva altre analoghe imprese compiute dal grande disegnatore e illustratore negli Stati Uniti nel corso del decennio precedente.
A lavoro compiuto, Steinberg chiede a un giovane Ugo Mulas di testimoniare l’opera, nella sua interezza e nei particolari. Per aiutare il fotografo nel suo lavoro, l’artista redige anche un breve testo che spiega l’iconografia e il senso del suo lavoro, una riflessione sul labirinto a partire dalla Galleria Vittorio Emanuele di Milano, città nella quale Steinberg aveva vissuto prima della guerra. Nel 1997 la palazzina sarà nuovamente ristrutturata, e i graffiti distrutti: oggi, di quello splendido intervento rimangono solo le fotografie di Ugo Mulas, capaci di restituire insieme il documento dell’opera e la sua interpretazione.
La mostra Ugo Mulas / I graffiti di Saul Steinberg a Milano, a cura di Archivio Ugo Mulas e Walter Guadagnini, sarà nella Project Room di CAMERA a partire dal 14 febbraio al 14 aprile 2024 e racconta quella vicenda, riproponendo in scala l’intera decorazione a partire dalle fotografie di Mulas. Una selezione di una quindicina di fotografie – alcune vintage altre stampate per questa occasione – permettono di entrare in profondità nel lavoro di questi due grandi rappresentanti dell’arte del XX secolo, di apprezzare la fantasia iconografica steinberghiana e la lucidità poetica dell’occhio di Mulas.
La mostra sarà accompagnata da un volume edito da Dario Cimorelli Editore, curato da Dario Borso, autore del testo critico e della ricerca che ha permesso la ricostruzione di questo singolare episodio della cultura italiana del dopoguerra, contenente le immagini di Mulas e il dattiloscritto inviato da Steinberg al fotografo.
In 1961 Saul Steinberg produced an extraordinary graffiti decoration of the atrium of the Palazzina Mayer in Milan, commissioned by Studio BBPR, which was overseeing its renovation. It was an important work, which followed other similar undertakings accomplished by the great draftsman and illustrator in the United States during the previous decade.
When the work was completed, Steinberg asked a young Ugo Mulas to witness the work, in its entirety and in detail. To aid the photographer in his work, the artist also drafts a short text explaining the iconography and meaning of his work, a reflection on the labyrinth starting with the Galleria Vittorio Emanuele in Milan, the city in which Steinberg had lived before the war. In 1997 the building would be renovated again, and the graffiti destroyed: today, only Ugo Mulas' photographs remain of that splendid intervention, capable of restoring both the document of the work and its interpretation.
The exhibition Ugo Mulas / Saul Steinberg's Graffiti in Milan, curated by the Ugo Mulas Archive and Walter Guadagnini, will be in CAMERA's Project Room from February 14 to April 14, 2024, and recounts that event, re-proposing to scale the entire decoration from Mulas' photographs. A selection of about fifteen photographs-some vintage others printed for this occasion-allow us to enter deeply into the work of these two great representatives of 20th-century art, to appreciate the iconographic imagination of Steinbergian and the poetic lucidity of Mulas' eye.
The exhibition will be accompanied by a volume published by Dario Cimorelli Editore, edited by Dario Borso, author of the critical text and research that enabled the reconstruction of this singular episode in postwar Italian culture, containing Mulas' images and the typescript sent by Steinberg to the photographer.
