Der Ostkreuz-Fotograf Sebastian Wells untersucht in der Ausstellung „Typ/Traube/Tross“ das Identitätskonstrukt nationalistischer Bewegungen, hier exemplarisch in Flandern. Mit seinen Fotografien geht er der Frage nach, wie mittels sozialer Praktiken, Uniformen und Bildsymbolik eine Vorstellung von Gemeinschaft geschaffen wird, die an Nationalismen festhält und sich auf eine kollektiv imaginierte Geschichte stützt.
Mal mit, mal ohne Uniform: Zwei Porträtfolgen von Mitgliedern einer ultranationalistischen Studierendenverbindung in Flandern werden einander gegenübergestellt. Mit ihrer strengen Ästhetik schärfen die Fotografien den Blick für die Wirkung von Kleidung und die Hierarchien, die durch sie vermittelt werden. Darüber hinaus sind Eindrücke von Sebastian Wells‘ Reisen durch Flandern zu sehen. Eine überwucherte Mauer, Schützengräben, ein Stapel Zeitungen, Demonstrierende gegen Corona-Maßnahmen, die sich in die flämisch-nationalistische Flagge hüllen: Die Bilder weben ein komplexes Netz aus Spuren der Vergangenheit und Zeichen der Gegenwart. Sebastian Wells widmet sich auch der buchstäblichen Geschichtsschreibung: In der künstlerischen Überarbeitung einer historischen Publikation, die das „germanische Volksgesicht“ auszumachen suchte, deckt er rassistische Diskurse auf und reflektiert über die Macht von Text und Bild.
Mitten in Europa ist rechtsradikales Gedankengut weit verbreitet. Mit seinen Arbeiten zeigt Sebastian Wells auf, wie Vorstellungen von Identität und Geschichte visuell inszeniert und kommuniziert werden. Dabei sieht der Künstler seine Rolle als die eines Archäologen, der in der Gegenwart nach den Spuren von gestern sucht.
Sebastian Wells (geb. 1996 in Königs Wusterhausen) studierte Fotografie an der Ostkreuzschule in Berlin, der Hochschule Bielefeld und der KASK (Königlichen Akademie der Bildenden Künste) in Gent. Seit 2019 ist er Mitglied der Agentur Ostkreuz. Sebastian Wells ist außerdem Mitbegründer des ukrainisch-deutschen Kunstmagazins „soлomiya“, dessen dritte Ausgabe im Frühling 2024 erscheint. Er lebt und arbeitet in Berlin.
Dans l'exposition "Type/Traube/Tross", le photographe d'Ostkreuz Sebastian Wells examine la construction identitaire des mouvements nationalistes, ici de manière exemplaire en Flandre. Avec ses photographies, il s'interroge sur la manière dont, au moyen de pratiques sociales, d'uniformes et de symbolisme pictural, on crée une idée de communauté qui s'accroche aux nationalismes et s'appuie sur une histoire imaginée collectivement.
Tantôt avec, tantôt sans uniforme : deux séries de portraits de membres d'une association d'étudiants ultranationalistes en Flandre sont mises en parallèle. Avec leur esthétique austère, les photographies aiguisent le regard sur l'effet des vêtements et les hiérarchies qu'ils véhiculent. On y voit en outre des impressions des voyages de Sebastian Wells en Flandre. Un mur envahi par la végétation, des tranchées, une pile de journaux, des manifestants contre les mesures de Corona qui se drapent dans le drapeau nationaliste flamand : Les visuels tissent un réseau complexe de traces du passé et de signes du présent. Sebastian Wells se consacre également à l'écriture littérale de l'histoire : en retravaillant artistiquement une publication historique qui cherchait à repérer le "visage populaire germanique", il met à jour des discours racistes et réfléchit au pouvoir du texte et du visuel.
Au cœur de l'Europe, les idées d'extrême droite sont très répandues. Avec ses travaux, Sebastian Wells montre comment les idées d'identité et d'histoire sont mises en scène et communiquées visuellement. Ce faisant, l'artiste considère son rôle comme celui d'un archéologue qui cherche dans le présent les traces d'hier.
Sebastian Wells (né en 1996 à Königs Wusterhausen) a étudié la photographie à l'école Ostkreuz de Berlin, à l'université de Bielefeld et à la KASK (Académie royale des beaux-arts) de Gand. Depuis 2019, il est membre de l'agence Ostkreuz. Sebastian Wells est également cofondateur du magazine d'art ukrainien-allemand "soлomiya", dont le troisième numéro paraîtra au printemps 2024. Il vit et travaille à Berlin.
Nella mostra "Typ/Traube/Tross", il fotografo di Ostkreuz Sebastian Wells esamina la costruzione identitaria dei movimenti nazionalisti, qui esemplificati nelle Fiandre. Con le sue fotografie, esplora la questione di come le pratiche sociali, le uniformi e il simbolismo visivo siano utilizzati per creare un'idea di comunità che si aggrappa al nazionalismo e si basa su una storia immaginata collettivamente.
A volte con, a volte senza uniforme: vengono accostate due serie di ritratti di membri di una confraternita studentesca ultranazionalista delle Fiandre. Con la loro estetica austera, le fotografie acuiscono lo sguardo sull'effetto dell'abbigliamento e sulle gerarchie che esso trasmette. Sono esposte anche le impressioni dei viaggi di Sebastian Wells attraverso le Fiandre. Un muro incolto, trincee, una pila di giornali, manifestanti contro le misure corona avvolti nella bandiera nazionalista fiamminga: Le immagini tessono una complessa trama di tracce del passato e segni del presente. Sebastian Wells si dedica anche alla scrittura letterale della storia: nella revisione artistica di una pubblicazione storica che cercava di identificare il "volto germanico del popolo", scopre discorsi razzisti e riflette sul potere del testo e dell'immagine.
Le idee estremiste di destra sono diffuse nel centro dell'Europa. Con le sue opere, Sebastian Wells mostra come le idee di identità e di storia siano messe in scena e comunicate visivamente. L'artista vede il suo ruolo come quello di un archeologo alla ricerca di tracce di ieri nel presente.

In the exhibition "Typ/Traube/Tross", Ostkreuz photographer Sebastian Wells examines the identity construct of nationalist movements, here exemplified in Flanders. With his photographs, he explores the question of how social practices, uniforms and visual symbolism are used to create an idea of community that clings to nationalisms and is based on a collectively imagined history.
Sometimes with, sometimes without uniform: two series of portraits of members of an ultra-nationalist student fraternity in Flanders are juxtaposed. With their austere aesthetics, the photographs sharpen the eye for the effect of clothing and the hierarchies it conveys. Impressions of Sebastian Wells' travels through Flanders are also on display. An overgrown wall, trenches, a pile of newspapers, demonstrators against corona measures wrapped in the Flemish nationalist flag: The visuals weave a complex web of traces of the past and signs of the present. Sebastian Wells also devotes himself to the literal writing of history: in the artistic revision of a historical publication that sought to identify the "Germanic face of the people", he uncovers racist discourses and reflects on the power of text and visuals.
Right-wing extremist ideas are widespread in the middle of Europe. With his works, Sebastian Wells shows how ideas of identity and history are visually staged and communicated. The artist sees his role as that of an archaeologist searching for traces of yesterday in the present.
