Viele Künstler haben ein starkes und anhaltendes Interesse an der Druckgrafik. Es genügt, sich an Pablo Picasso zu erinnern, dessen Arbeiten bemerkenswert sind, sowohl in Bezug auf seine Themen als auch auf seine Beherrschung der Prozesse. Die MBAL verfügt über eine schöne Sammlung von Drucken und verfolgt die Bedeutung dieser Kunst im In- und Ausland. Eine Triennale zeitgenössischer Druckkunst wurde Anfang der 90er Jahre in Le Locle geboren und hat seitdem eine lange Liste von Künstlern zusammengeführt, die sich für die Technik der Druckgrafik entschieden haben. Für diese neunte Ausgabe würdigt die MBAL Verlage und Druckereien, die ihr Know-How den Künstlerinnen und Künstlern, aber auch ihrer Sammlung mit einer Auswahl von Vorzeigewerken zur Verfügung stellen. Die Triennale feiert den Druck in all seinen Formen - klassische Verfahren (Fotogravüre, Radierung, Cyanotypie, Siebdruck, Lithographie, etc.), aber auch die neuesten Forschungen zum Digitaldruck - und bringt fast 50 Künstlerinnen und Künstler zusammen. Dazu gehören die Schweizer Emmanuelle Antille, Marc Bauer, Claudia Comte, Demain Conard, Philippe Decrauzat, Silvie Defraoui, Urs Fischer, Peter Fischli & David Weiss, Fabrice Gygi, Christian Marclay sowie Mama Andersson, Alfredo & Isabel Aquilizan, Kim Beom, John Chiara, Tacita Dean, Olafur Eliasson, Carsten Höller, Dinh Q. Lê, Annette Lenz, Matt Saunders, Penelope Umbrico oder John Zurier
Après un printemps photographique, l’été sera consacré à l’estampe contemporaine avec une nouvelle édition de la Triennale de l’art imprimé contemporain qui réunira des artistes du monde entier. Largement présente dans les collections, la gravure fait partie de l’ADN du MBAL. Résolument tourné vers la diversité du champ de l’art imprimé contemporain et des nouveaux territoires de la création, le musée s’intéresse dans cette exposition aux ateliers d’impression et éditeurs. En effet, c’est grâce au savoir-faire de ces lieux et à leur passion que nombre d’artistes ont l’occasion de produire des éditions et d’expérimenter de nouvelles techniques d’impression, de nouveaux supports, papiers et encres.
A l’occasion de la 9e édition de la Triennale de l’art imprimé contemporain, le MBAL a ainsi invité trois des plus grands imprimeurs / éditeurs internationaux à présenter une sélection d’œuvres réalisées par des artistes venus dans leurs ateliers :
STPI – Creative Workshop Gallery, établi depuis 2002 à Singapour, est un lieu unique en Asie qui permet à ses artistes de mener de riches expérimentations autour de l’impression et du papier. Niels Borch Jensen, qui a fondé Borch Editions à Copenhague en 1979, est considéré comme l’un des plus grands producteurs et éditeurs en art graphique et travaille avec des artistes de renommée mondiale. Enfin, l’atelier Crown Point Press, ouvert en 1962 à San Francisco, offre la possibilité aux artistes de graver les plaques et travailler les encres dans des conditions exceptionnelles.
La Triennale est également l’occasion de rappeler le fort intérêt que la Suisse et le musée portent à l’art imprimé. Une salle est consacrée à la Société Suisse de Gravure, dont on célèbre le centenaire en 2018. Membre depuis 1976, le MBAL a ainsi acquis de nombreuses œuvres réalisées par des artistes suisses et internationaux invités à réaliser une gravure. L’exposition présente une sélection de la collection des années 2000 à nos jours. De plus, un espace est dédié à la collection qui présente plusieurs chefs-d’œuvres abrités au musée et rarement exposés.
Enfin, souhaitant montrer les recherches actuelles autour des nouvelles technologies graphiques, une double carte blanche est offerte au Center for Future Publishing, fondé par le designer Demian Conrad en 2017, et abrité par la Haute école d’art et de design de Genève, ainsi qu’à l’artiste américaine Penelope Umbrico invitée par le MBAL à expérimenter dans ce laboratoire unique en son genre. Pour compléter cet état des lieux célébrant l’art imprimé contemporain, le musée produit une édition limitée réalisée par la graphiste Anette Lenz. Le travail – une sérigraphie imprimée à 200 exemplaires – sera disponible dans notre boutique.
L’exposition a reçu le soutien de la Loterie Romande, la Ville du Locle, la Société des beaux-arts et du musée du Locle, la Fondation Bonhôte pour l’art contemporain, la Fondation de Famille Sandoz, Swiss Life, la Fondation Erna et Curt Burgauer, Dr. Georg und Josi Guggenheim-Stiftung et la Fondation Art en jeu. After a photographic spring, the summer will be dedicated to the contemporary print with a new edition of the Triennial of Contemporary Prints which will gather artists of the whole world. Widely present in collections, the engraving is a part of the DNA of MBAL. Resolutely turned to the diversity of the field of the contemporary printed art and the new territories of the creation, the museum is interested in this exhibition in the workshops of printing and publishing. Indeed, it is thanks to the know-how of these places and to their passion that number of artists has the opportunity to produce publishing and to experiment new techniques of impression, new supports, papers and ink.
On the occasion of the 9th edition of the Triennial of Contemporary Prints, MBAL has then invited printers and publishers to present a selection of works by artists who worked in close collaboration with them:
STPI – Creative Workshop & Gallery, established since 2002 in Singapore, is a unique place in Asia that allows artists to conduct rich experiments on printing and paper. Niels Borch Jensen, who founded Borch Editions in Copenhagen in 1979, is considered one of the world’s leading producers and publishers of graphic art and works with world-renowned artists. Finally, the Crown Point Press workshop, opened in San Francisco in 1962, offers artists the opportunity to engrave plates and use inks in exceptional conditions.
The Triennial is also an opportunity to commemorate Switzerland’s strong interest in print making. A room is devoted to the Swiss Engraving Society, which celebrates its centenary in 2018. MBAL has been a member since 1976 and has therefore acquired many works made by Swiss and international artists that were commissionned by this Society. The exhibition presents a selection of prints made in the 21st century. In addition, a space is dedicated to our collection which presents several masterpieces owned by MBAL and rarely displayed to the public.
Finally, wishing to display research around new graphic technologies, a double carte blanche is given to the Center for Future Publishing, founded in 2017 by designer Demian Conrad and hosted by the Geneva School of Art and Design, as well as to American artist Penelope Umbrico, who was invited by MBAL to experiment in this unique laboratory. To complete this rich survey dedicated to contemporary print making, the museum commissioned graphic designer Anette Lenz to make a limited edition print. The work – a silkscreen printed in 200 copies – will be available in our bookshop.
