Die CHAUSSEE 36 Photo Foundation freut sich, die Einzelausstellung „Tokyo is yours“ von der australischen Fotografin Meg Hewitt zu zeigen und somit das Werk der Künstlerin zum ersten Mal in Deutschland zu präsentieren.
Meg Hewitt, geboren 1973 in Sydney, Australien, studierte Bildhauerei, Malerei und Medien. Seit 2010 widmet sie sich der Fotografie.
"Tokyo is yours" ist eine Schwarz-Weiß-Serie, die zwischen 2015 und 2017 in Tokio entstanden ist. Der Zyklus zeigt Hewitts tiefe Reflexion über Japan und über dessen Unsicherheit und Zerbrechlichkeit nach der Katastrophe in Fukushima. Die Umweltkatastrophe von 2011 führte beinahe zur Evakuierung von Tokyo, dieser Stadt mit mehr 13 Mio. Einwohnern. Der Titel „Tokyo is yours“ stammt wiederum von einem Graffiti, das auf die Mauern der Stadt geschrieben wurde.
Die Fotografin findet ihre Inspirationen in Mangas und Filmen. Es ist vor allem das Leben in den Straßen von Tokio, das sie interessiert.
Die Szenen, die Meg Hewitt auf ihren Film bannt, haben filmische Qualitäten. Menschen treffen aufeinander, seltsame Situationen tauchen auf und verschwinden wieder. Meg reiste zwischen 2015 und 2017 sieben Mal nach Japan. Täglich lief sie zwölf Stunden lang durch die Stadt, spazierte durch Parks, Nachtbars und den Tierpark, reiste nach Fukushima oder besuchte die Uferpromenade. Sie fing kleine Details ein, die spontan ihre Aufmerksamkeit erregten und verewigte die Einwohner, denen sie begegnete. Die Tatsache, dass sie kein Japanisch spricht oder liest, keine Konversation verstand, gab ihr ein Gefühl völliger Freiheit und Kreativität. Die Menschen, denen sie begegnete und die Szenen, denen sie beiwohnte, wurden dadurch zu Symbolen, Archetypen und Metaphern. Der Fotograf Daido Moriyama, dessen Werk Meg Hewitt als Inspirationsquelle ansieht, beschreibt ihre Fotografien als „gefährlich“.
Mit ihren Fotos erforscht Meg Hewitt den Raum zwischen den Dingen, Erinnerungen, zwischenmenschlichen Beziehungen und Angst. Oft fotografiert sie nachts mit Blitzlicht, wodurch sie ihr Motiv vom Kontext isolieren kann. Die Verwendung von Silberfilm betont die Kontraste der Schwarztöne beim Entwickeln der Filme.
Ihr 68 Fotografien umfassendes Buch Tokyo is yours (erste Edition 2017, Nayana Press Verlag) ist ein fulminanter Beweis für die starke Anziehungskraft, die das Absurde auf Hewitt ausübt.

Meg Hewitt, née en 1973 à Sydney, en Australie, a étudié la sculpture, la peinture et les médias. Depuis 2010, elle se consacre à la photographie.
"Tokyo is yours" est une série en noir et blanc réalisée à Tokyo entre 2015 et 2017. Ce cycle illustre la profonde réflexion de Hewitt sur le Japon, son incertitude et sa fragilité après la catastrophe de Fukushima. La catastrophe écologique de 2011 a failli entraîner l'évacuation de Tokyo, cette ville de plus de 13 millions d'habitants. Le titre "Tokyo is yours" provient à son tour d'un graffiti inscrit sur les murs de la ville.
La photographe trouve son inspiration dans les mangas et les films. C'est surtout la vie dans les rues de Tokyo qui l'intéresse.
Les scènes que Meg Hewitt fixe sur sa pellicule ont des qualités cinématographiques. Les gens se rencontrent, des situations étranges apparaissent et disparaissent. Meg s'est rendue sept fois au Japon entre 2015 et 2017. Chaque jour, elle a marché pendant douze heures dans la ville, s'est promenée dans les parcs, les bars de nuit et le parc animalier, s'est rendue à Fukushima ou a visité le front de mer. Elle a capturé des petits détails qui ont spontanément attiré son attention et a immortalis les habitants qu'elle a rencontrés. Le fait qu'elle ne parle ni ne lise le japonais, qu'elle ne comprenne aucune conversation, lui a donné un sentiment de liberté totale et de créativité. Les personnes qu'elle a rencontrées et les scènes auxquelles elle a assisté sont ainsi devenues des symboles, des archétypes et des métaphores. Le photographe Daido Moriyama, dont Meg Hewitt considère l'œuvre comme une source d'inspiration, décrit ses photographies comme "dangereuses".
Avec ses photos, Meg Hewitt explore l'espace entre les choses, les souvenirs, les relations interpersonnelles et la peur. Elle prend souvent des photos de nuit au flash, ce qui lui permet d'isoler son sujet du contexte. L'utilisation de films argentiques accentue les contrastes des noirs lors du développement des films.

"Tokyo is yours" is a black-and-white series created in Tokyo between 2015 and 2017. Through her photographs, Meg Hewitt explores the space between things, memories, interpersonal relationships, and fear. She often photographs at night with a flash, which allows her to isolate her subject from the context. The use of silver film emphasizes the contrasts of blacks as the films are developed.
Her 68-photograph book Tokyo is yours (first edition 2017, Nayana Press Publishers) is a brilliant testament to the powerful attraction that the absurd holds for Hewitt.
