Die Bildhalle Zürich freut sich, die erste Einzelausstellung der international erfolgreichen holländischen Fotografin Ilona Langbroek zu präsentieren.
TERRA INCOGNITA basiert auf Langbroeks familiären Geschichte, die eng verbunden ist mit der kolonialen Vergangenheit ihres Landes und der Geschichte von Niederländisch-Ostindien. Es geht um die Entwurzelung und die gespaltene Identität von Menschen, die gezwungen waren, ihr Heimatland überstürzt zu verlassen – so wie Ilonas Langbroeks indonesische Grossmutter, die durch ihre Ehe mit einem holländischen Soldaten nach der Unabhängigkeit Indonesiens in ihrem eigenen Land nicht mehr willkommen war.
Die Künstlerin versetzt sich in ihrer Arbeit in die Lebenswelt ihrer Grosseltern, versucht aber auch, über intensive Recherche und das Studium von historischen Bildern und Literatur, das kollektive Trauma einer ganzen Generation zu verstehen und in metaphorisch-poetische Bilder zu übersetzen. In ihren Stillleben und inszenierten Porträts arbeitet sie mit Objekten und Stoffen, die – ob historisch oder durch sie selbst entworfen – die alte und neue Heimat ihrer Grossmutter verbinden und visuell manifestieren.
Ilona Langbroek bedient sich der Ästhetik des «Chiaroscuro», der starken Kontraste von Hell und Dunkel, wie man sie auf den Gemälden des Barocks und der Spätrenaissance findet – insbesondere auch in der holländischen Malerei jener Zeit. Durch Licht und Schatten schafft die Künstlerin eine Atmosphäre des Übergangs, symbolisch für jene Zwischenwelt, in der sich Menschen befinden, die vertrautes Terrain zurücklassen und sich an einem neuen unbekannten Ort – Terra Incognita – nicht zuhause fühlen.
Zelda Cheatle, eine renommierte britische Kuratorin für Fotografie, bezeichnete Langbroek 2021 als die „Entdeckung des Jahres“. Dass Ilona Langbroek nicht nur in den Niederlanden, sondern auch international Erfolge feiert, ist sicher auch dem Umstand zu verdanken, dass sie ihre persönliche Geschichte zwischen den Zeilen erzählt. Für die Betrachter:in bleibt Raum, die unerzählten Geschichten hinter den Bildern zu enträtseln und mit eigenen Erinnerungen in Verbindung zu bringen.
La Bildhalle de Zurich a le plaisir de présenter la première exposition individuelle de la photographe hollandaise Ilona Langbroek, qui connaît un succès international.
TERRA INCOGNITA est basée sur l'histoire familiale de Langbroek, qui est étroitement liée au passé colonial de son pays et à l'histoire des Indes orientales néerlandaises. Il s'agit du déracinement et de l'identité divisée de personnes qui ont été contraintes de quitter précipitamment leur pays d'origine - comme la grand-mère indonésienne d'Ilonas Langbroek, qui n'était plus la bienvenue dans son propre pays suite à son mariage avec un soldat hollandais après l'indépendance de l'Indonésie.
Dans son travail, l'artiste se transpose dans l'univers de ses grands-parents, mais elle tente également, par le biais de recherches intensives et de l'étude d'images et de littérature historiques, de comprendre le traumatisme collectif de toute une génération et de le traduire en visuels métaphoriques et poétiques. Dans ses natures mortes et ses portraits mis en scène, elle travaille avec des objets et des tissus qui - qu'ils soient historiques ou conçus par elle-même - relient et manifestent visuellement l'ancienne et la nouvelle patrie de sa grand-mère.
Ilona Langbroek utilise l'esthétique du "clair-obscur", les forts contrastes de clair et d'obscur que l'on retrouve dans les tableaux de l'époque baroque et de la fin de la Renaissance - notamment aussi dans la peinture hollandaise de cette époque. Par la lumière et l'ombre, l'artiste crée une atmosphère de transition, symbolique de ce monde intermédiaire dans lequel se trouvent les personnes qui laissent derrière elles un terrain familier et ne se sentent pas chez elles dans un nouveau lieu inconnu - Terra Incognita.
Zelda Cheatle, une conservatrice britannique de renom spécialisée dans la photographie, a qualifié Langbroek de "découverte de l'année" en 2021. Si Ilona Langbroek connaît un succès non seulement aux Pays-Bas, mais aussi à l'international, c'est certainement parce qu'elle raconte son histoire personnelle entre les lignes. Les spectateurs ont ainsi la possibilité de décrypter les histoires non racontées qui se cachent derrière les visuels et de les mettre en relation avec leurs propres souvenirs.

TERRA INCOGNITA si basa sulla storia della famiglia della Langbroek, strettamente legata al passato coloniale del suo Paese e alla storia delle Indie Orientali Olandesi. Si tratta dello sradicamento e della scissione dell'identità di persone che sono state costrette a lasciare la loro patria in fretta e furia, come la nonna indonesiana di Ilonas Langbroek, che dopo l'indipendenza dell'Indonesia non era più gradita nel suo Paese a causa del suo matrimonio con un soldato olandese.
Nel suo lavoro, l'artista si colloca nel mondo dei suoi nonni, ma cerca anche di comprendere il trauma collettivo di un'intera generazione attraverso un'intensa ricerca e lo studio di immagini storiche e letteratura, e di tradurlo in immagini metaforiche e poetiche. Nelle sue nature morte e nei suoi ritratti in scena, l'artista lavora con oggetti e tessuti che - siano essi storici o di sua creazione - collegano e manifestano visivamente la vecchia e la nuova patria di sua nonna.
Ilona Langbroek utilizza l'estetica del "chiaroscuro", i forti contrasti di luce e buio presenti nei dipinti barocchi e del tardo Rinascimento, soprattutto nella pittura olandese dell'epoca. L'artista usa la luce e l'ombra per creare un'atmosfera di transizione, simboleggiando il mondo intermedio in cui si trovano le persone quando si lasciano alle spalle il territorio familiare e non si sentono a casa in un luogo nuovo e sconosciuto - terra incognita.
Zelda Cheatle, rinomata curatrice britannica di fotografia, ha definito Langbroek la "scoperta dell'anno" nel 2021. Il successo di Ilona Langbroek non solo nei Paesi Bassi, ma anche a livello internazionale, è certamente dovuto anche al fatto che racconta la sua storia personale tra le righe. Gli spettatori hanno la possibilità di svelare le storie non raccontate che si celano dietro le immagini e di collegarle ai propri ricordi.
Bildhalle Zürich is pleased to present the first solo exhibition of the internationally successful Dutch photographer Ilona Langbroek.
TERRA INCOGNITA is based on Langbroek's family history, which is closely linked to her country's colonial past and the history of the Dutch East Indies. It is about the uprootedness and split identity of people who were forced to leave their homeland in a hurry - like Ilonas Langbroek's Indonesian grandmother, who was no longer welcome in her own country after Indonesia's independence due to her marriage to a Dutch soldier.
In her work, the artist places herself in the world of her grandparents, but also attempts to understand the collective trauma of an entire generation through intensive research and the study of historical images and literature, and to translate it into metaphorical and poetic visuals. In her still lifes and staged portraits, she works with objects and fabrics that - whether historical or of her own design - connect and visually manifest her grandmother's old and new homeland.
Ilona Langbroek uses the aesthetics of "chiaroscuro", the strong contrasts of light and dark found in Baroque and late Renaissance paintings - especially in Dutch painting of the time. Through light and shadow, the artist creates an atmosphere of transition, symbolic of that in-between world in which people find themselves when they leave familiar terrain behind and do not feel at home in a new unknown place - terra incognita.
Zelda Cheatle, a renowned British curator of photography, described Langbroek as the "discovery of the year" in 2021. Ilona Langbroek's success not only in the Netherlands, but also internationally, is of course also due to the fact that she tells her personal story between the lines. There is room for viewers to unravel the untold stories behind the visuals and connect them to their own memories.
