Diese erste europäische Einzelausstellung des New Yorker Duos Andrea Orejarena (*1994, Kolumbien) und Caleb Stein (*1994, UK) präsentiert fotografische und filmische Arbeiten, die sich mit Praktiken der Simulation und Narrativen der Desinformation auseinandersetzen.
Das Künstlerduo Andrea Orejarena, Kognitionswissenschaftlerin und Fotografin, und Caleb Stein, Dokumentarfotograf, ist bekannt für ihre konzeptuell-dokumentarischen Projekte, zu individueller Wahrnehmung und kollektiver Wirklichkeitskonstruktion. Ihre Arbeiten werden u.a. in den New York Times, The Guardian, i-D Vice, Vogue Italia, und Wallpaper* publiziert.
Da ein wachsendes Misstrauen in die Unterscheidung von Realität und Fiktion unsere Gegenwart prägt, begab sich das Duo seit 2020 auf Social Media und fotografisch auf Erkundungstour. Entstanden ist ein erstes Archiv mit über 1.500 Fotografien und aktuellen Bildformen, das den Einfluss von Verschwörungsnarrativen auf die amerikanische Gesellschaft und die individuelle Wahrnehmung manifestiert.
Dieses Archiv fotografischer Formen von »alternative facts« tritt in der Installation American Glitch in Dialog mit den Landschaftsaufnahmen von Orejarena & Stein, die vermeintlichen Schauplätze von verschwörungstheoretischen Ereignissen dokumentieren und decodieren. Durch ihr Aufgreifen von Traditionen wie Roadtrips und Street Photography verwebt American Glitch Kontinuitäten aus der amerikanischen Fotogeschichte mit den neuen Phänomenen zeitgenössischer Online-Kultur.
Bereits seit ihrem Projekt Long Time No See (2018-2020) arbeitet das Duo an der drängenden Frage, welche Rolle die Fotografie für das Wechselverhältnis von Wahrnehmung und Imagination heute spielen kann. Long Time No See entstand zusammen mit jungen vietnamesischen Künstler*innen sowie Veteranen in Hanoi und zeichnet die künstlerische Auseinandersetzung mit den heutigen Erinnerungen und Folgen des Vietnamkrieges nach. In poetischen Porträts und Landschaftsansichten zeigt Long Time No See eine visuelle Spurensuche nach den Zwischentönen dissonanter Geschichtsschreibungen und Bildformen zwischen Dokumentation und subjektiver Wahrnehmung.
Die neue Ausstellungsreihe VIRAL HALLUCINATIONS adressiert das Spannungsfeld dokumentarischer Strategien in einer global vernetzten »Post-Wahrheit-Ära«.

Cette première exposition individuelle européenne du duo new-yorkais Andrea Orejarena (*1994, Colombie) et Caleb Stein (*1994, Royaume-Uni) présente des travaux photographiques et cinématographiques qui explorent les pratiques de simulation et les récits de désinformation.
Le duo d'artistes Andrea Orejarena, spécialiste des sciences cognitives et photographe, et Caleb Stein, photographe documentaire, est connu pour ses projets conceptuels et documentaires, sur la perception individuelle et la construction collective de la réalité. Leurs travaux sont publiés entre autres dans le New York Times, The Guardian, i-D Vice, Vogue Italia et Wallpaper*.
Comme une méfiance croissante à l'égard de la distinction entre réalité et fiction caractérise notre présent, le duo s'est lancé depuis 2020 dans une exploration des médias sociaux et de la photographie. Il en résulte une première archive de plus de 1 500 photographies et formes d'images actuelles qui manifestent l'influence des récits de conspiration sur la société américaine et la perception individuelle.
Dans l'installation American Glitch, ces archives de formes photographiques de "faits alternatifs" entrent en dialogue avec les photos de paysages d'Orejarena & Stein, qui documentent et décodent les lieux supposés d'événements conspirationnistes. En s'inspirant de traditions telles que les road-trips et la street photography, American Glitch entrelace les continuités de l'histoire de la photographie américaine avec les nouveaux phénomènes de la culture en ligne contemporaine.
Depuis leur projet Long Time No See (2018-2020), le duo travaille sur la question urgente du rôle que la photographie peut jouer aujourd'hui dans l'interaction entre la perception et l'imagination. Long Time No See a été réalisé en collaboration avec de jeunes artistes vietnamiens* ainsi que des vétérans à Hanoi et retrace la confrontation artistique avec les souvenirs et les conséquences actuelles de la guerre du Vietnam. À travers des portraits poétiques et des vues de paysages, Long Time No See montre une recherche visuelle des nuances d'écritures historiques dissonantes et de formes d'images entre documentation et perception subjective.
La nouvelle série d'expositions VIRAL HALLUCINATIONS aborde le champ de tension des stratégies documentaires dans une "ère post-vérité" globalement interconnectée.

Nell'installazione American Glitch, questo archivio di forme fotografiche di "fatti alternativi" entra in dialogo con le fotografie di paesaggio di Orejarena & Stein, che documentano e decodificano i presunti luoghi degli eventi della teoria del complotto. Riprendendo tradizioni come i viaggi su strada e la street photography, American Glitch intreccia le continuità della storia fotografica americana con i nuovi fenomeni della cultura online contemporanea.
A partire dal progetto Long Time No See (2018-2020), il duo lavora sulla pressante questione del ruolo che la fotografia può svolgere oggi nell'interazione tra percezione e immaginazione. Long Time No See è stato realizzato insieme a giovani artisti e veterani vietnamiti ad Hanoi e traccia un esame artistico dei ricordi e delle conseguenze odierne della guerra del Vietnam. Attraverso ritratti poetici e vedute paesaggistiche, Long Time No See mostra una ricerca visiva delle sfumature di storiografie e forme visive dissonanti tra documentazione e percezione soggettiva.
La nuova serie di mostre VIRAL HALLUCINATIONS affronta il campo di tensione delle strategie documentarie in una "era della post-verità" in rete a livello globale.

The artist duo Andrea Orejarena, cognitive scientist and photographer, and Caleb Stein, documentary photographer, are known for their conceptual-documentary projects on individual perception and the collective construction of reality. Their work has been published in the New York Times, The Guardian, i-D Vice, Vogue Italia, and Wallpaper*, among others.
As a growing distrust in the distinction between reality and fiction characterizes our present, the duo has been exploring social media and photography since 2020. The result is a first archive of over 1,500 photographs and current image forms that manifest the influence of conspiracy narratives on American society and individual perception.
In the installation American Glitch, this archive of photographic forms of "alternative facts" enters into a dialog with the landscape photographs by Orejarena & Stein, which document and decode the supposed locations of conspiracy theory events. By taking up traditions such as road trips and street photography, American Glitch interweaves continuities from American photographic history with the new phenomena of contemporary online culture.
Since their project Long Time No See (2018-2020), the duo has been working on the pressing question of what role photography can play in the interplay between perception and imagination today. Long Time No See was created together with young Vietnamese artists and veterans in Hanoi and traces the artistic examination of today's memories and consequences of the Vietnam War. In poetic portraits and landscape views, Long Time No See shows a visual search for traces of the nuances of dissonant historiographies and image forms between documentation and subjective perception.
The new exhibition series VIRAL HALLUCINATIONS addresses the field of tension of documentary strategies in a globally networked "post-truth era".
