Diese Ausstellung folgt auf die jüngsten Retrospektiven der Künstlerin im Museum Reina Sofia in Madrid, den Nottingham Contemporary Galleries und auf ihre Teilnahme an der Biennale Venedig 2022. Sie markiert die Wiederentdeckung dieser autodidaktischen Künstlerin, deren Karriere sich hauptsächlich am Rande des offiziellen Kunstsystems abspielte.
Charlotte Johannesson lebt und arbeitet in Skanör, Schweden. Ihr Werk erforscht die Verwandtschaften zwischen der handwerklichen Technik des Webstuhls und der Technologie der Computerprogrammierung. Nach ihrer Ausbildung zur Weberin entwickelte sie ihre künstlerische Textilpraxis in den 1970er Jahren im Zentrum der Counter-Culture-Bewegung in Malmö. 1981 gründete sie zusammen mit ihrem Partner Sture Johannesson ein experimentelles Studio für die Produktion digitaler Bilder, das Digital Theatre.
Die Ausstellung in Friart umfasst Werke aus den letzten 50 Jahren: Textilien, Plotterdrucke, digitale Diashows, Gemälde und Spitzen bilden eine Konstellation wiederkehrender Motive. Die so geschaffenen Bilder rufen ihr Engagement in der Staatssatire in Erinnerung, in der Hippiekultur, im Punk, der cyber-culture bis zu einer kosmischeren Vorstellungswelt. Die radikale Natur ihrer Werke macht sie zu einer Vorläuferin der heutigen postfeministischen digitalen Kunst.
Cette exposition fait suite à ses récentes rétrospectives au Musée Reina Sofia de Madrid, à Nottingham Contemporary et à sa participation à la Biennale de Venise de 2022. Elle marque la redécouverte d’une artiste autodidacte dont la carrière s’est déroulée principalement en marge du système de l’art officiel.
Charlotte Johannesson vit et travaille à Skanör, en Suède. Son oeuvre explore les affinités entre la technologie artisanale du métier à tisser et la technologie digitale de la programmation informatique. Suite à sa formation de tisserande, elle développe sa pratique artistique textile dans les années 1970 au coeur l’environnement contre-culturel de Malmö. En 1981, en compagnie de son partenaire Sture Johannesson, elle met en place un studio expérimental de production d’images digitales, le Digital Theatre (Théâtre digital).
L’exposition à Friart rassemble des oeuvres réalisées ces 50 dernières années: textiles, impressions au plotter, diaporamas digitaux, peintures, dentelles forment une constellation de motifs récurrents. Les images créées évoquent son engagement dans la satire de l’État, de la culture hippie, au punk, à la cyberculture, vers un imaginaire plus cosmique. La nature radicale de son oeuvre fait d’elle une précurseuse de l’art digital post-féministe actuel.
Questa mostra segue le recenti retrospettive dell'artista al Museo Reina Sofia di Madrid, alla Nottingham Contemporary Galleries e la sua partecipazione alla Biennale di Ve¬nedig del 2022, e segna la riscoperta di questa artista autodidatta la cui carriera si è svolta principalmente ai margini del sistema artistico ufficiale.
Charlotte Johannesson vive e lavora a Skanör, in Svezia. Il suo lavoro esplora il rapporto tra l'artigianato del telaio e la tecnologia della programmazione informatica. Dopo essersi formata come tessitrice, ha sviluppato la sua pratica artistica tessile negli anni Settanta al centro del movimento di controcultura di Malmö. Nel 1981, insieme al suo partner Sture Johannesson, ha fondato uno studio sperimentale per la produzione di immagini digitali, il Digital Theatre.
La mostra a Friart comprende opere degli ultimi 50 anni: Tessuti, stampe con plotter, diapositive digitali, dipinti e pizzi formano una costellazione di motivi ricorrenti. Le immagini così create richiamano il suo coinvolgimento nella satira di stato, nella cultura hippie, nel punk, nella cyber-cultura fino a un immaginario più cosmico. La natura radicale del suo lavoro la rende un precursore dell'odierna arte digitale post-femminista.
This exhibition follows her recent retrospectives at the Reina Sofia Museum in Madrid and at Nottingham Contemporary, as well her participation at the 2022 Venice Biennale. It marks the rediscovery of a self-taught artist whose career took place mainly on official art system’s fringes.
Charlotte Johannesson lives and works in Skanör, Sweden. Her work explores the affinities between the craft technology of the loom and the digital technology of computer programming. After finishing her studies in applied textiles crafts, she developed her textile artistic practice in the 1970s within Malmö’s counterculture scene. In 1981, with her partner Sture Johannesson, she created an experimental digital arts laboratory, the Digital Theatre.
The exhibition at Friart brings together works produced over the last 50 years: textiles, plotter prints, digital slideshows, paintings and laces form a constellation of recurring patterns. The images created recall her involvement in state satire, hippie culture, punk, cyberculture, towards more cosmic visions. The radical nature of her work makes her a precursor to current post-feminist digital art.
