Verschrien, verkannt, vergöttert: Paparazzi gehören ohne Zweifel zu den schillerndsten Figuren der Fotogeschichte!
Ihre mit ebenso findigen wie ruchlosen Mitteln erjagten Bilder werden von Millionen Menschen gesehen, gleichwohl sind die Namen der Fotograf:innen kaum bekannt, ihre öffentliche Reputation ist gering. Der Begriff Paparazzi geht auf den gleichnamigen Fotografen in Federico Fellinis Filmklassiker La Dolce Vita zurück und galt lange als Schimpfwort, erst in jüngerer Zeit hat sich der Blick auf die Geschichte des Genres gewandelt. Heute werden die Bilder von herausragenden Vertreter:innen wie Ron Galella oder Marcello Geppetti als unverstellte Porträts und Zeugnisse einer Ära gewürdigt.
PAPARAZZI! vereint rund 120 Arbeiten von etwa 20 Bildautor:innen und spannt einen Bogen von den späten 1950er-Jahren bis in die 2000er. Ein Schwerpunkt liegt auf den 1960er- und 1970er-Jahren, als Fotografen wie Galella, Geppetti, Tazio Secchiaroli oder Elio Sorci das Metier zwischen Rom und den USA, Cinecittà und Hollywood definierten. Auf der Suche nach dem ultimativen Scoop rückten sie mit ihren Kameras Schauspieler:innen und anderen Persönlichkeiten des öffentlichen Lebens, darunter Brigitte Bardot, Marlon Brando, Romy Schneider, Richard Burton oder Jackie Kennedy, zu Leibe – und fingen en passant den Glamour der High Society ein. Dabei kam es mitunter zu denkwürdigen Begegnungen: Anita Ekberg, Star aus La Dolce Vita, wehrte sich gegen die aufdringlichen Paparazzi mit Pfeil und Bogen, Ron Galella kostete seine hartnäckige Verfolgung von Marlon Brando mehrere Zähne.
Die Ausstellung PAPARAZZI! widmet sich der Geschichte, den Methoden und der Ästhetik der Paparazzi-Fotografie, nimmt am Beispiel von Lady Diana und Britney Spears die kontroversen Aspekte des Genres in den Blick und beleuchtet mit Serien von Helmut Newton, Anton Corbijn, Alison Jackson oder der österreichischen Künstlergruppe G.R.A.M. die Faszination, die das Phänomen immer wieder auch auf andere Bereiche der Fotografie und auf die Kunst ausgeübt hat.

Décriés, méconnus, idolâtrés : les paparazzi font sans aucun doute partie des personnages les plus hauts en couleur de l'histoire de la photographie !
Leurs photos, obtenues par des moyens aussi ingénieux qu'impitoyables, sont vues par des millions de personnes, mais les noms des photographes sont peu connus et leur réputation publique est faible. Le terme de paparazzi, qui remonte au photographe du même nom dans le film classique La Dolce Vita de Federico Fellini, a longtemps été considéré comme une insulte, mais ce n'est que récemment que le regard sur l'histoire du genre a changé. Aujourd'hui, les images d'éminents représentants comme Ron Galella ou Marcello Geppetti sont appréciées comme des portraits sans concession et des témoignages d'une époque.
PAPARAZZI ! réunit environ 120 travaux d'une vingtaine d'auteurs et couvre une période allant de la fin des années 1950 aux années 2000. L'accent est mis sur les années 1960 et 1970, lorsque des photographes comme Galella, Geppetti, Tazio Secchiaroli ou Elio Sorci ont défini le métier entre Rome et les États-Unis, Cinecittà et Hollywood. A la recherche du scoop ultime, ils ont approché avec leurs appareils photo des acteurs et autres personnalités publiques, comme Brigitte Bardot, Marlon Brando, Romy Schneider, Richard Burton ou Jackie Kennedy, et ont capturé en passant le glamour de la haute société. Des rencontres mémorables ont parfois eu lieu : Anita Ekberg, la star de La Dolce Vita, s'est défendue contre les paparazzi importuns avec un arc et des flèches, Ron Galella a perdu plusieurs dents en poursuivant Marlon Brando avec acharnement.
L'exposition PAPARAZZI ! est consacrée à l'histoire, aux méthodes et à l'esthétique de la photographie de paparazzi. Elle met en lumière les aspects controversés du genre à travers l'exemple de Lady Diana et Britney Spears et met en lumière la fascination que le phénomène a toujours exercée sur d'autres domaines de la photographie et de l'art avec des séries de Helmut Newton, Anton Corbijn, Alison Jackson ou le groupe d'artistes autrichiens G.R.A.M..

Famosi, incompresi, idolatrati: i paparazzi sono senza dubbio alcune delle figure più colorate della storia della fotografia!
Le loro immagini, a cui danno la caccia con mezzi ingegnosi e nefasti, sono viste da milioni di persone, ma i nomi dei fotografi sono poco conosciuti e la loro reputazione pubblica è bassa. Il termine paparazzi risale all'omonimo fotografo del classico film di Federico Fellini La Dolce Vita ed è stato a lungo considerato una parolaccia, ma solo recentemente la visione della storia del genere è cambiata. Oggi, le immagini di rappresentanti di spicco come Ron Galella e Marcello Geppetti sono onorate come candidi ritratti e testimonianze di un'epoca.
PAPARAZZI! raccoglie circa 120 opere di una ventina di autori di immagini e copre un arco temporale che va dalla fine degli anni Cinquanta agli anni Duemila. Un focus è sugli anni Sessanta e Settanta, quando fotografi come Galella, Geppetti, Tazio Secchiaroli ed Elio Sorci definirono il mestiere tra Roma e gli Stati Uniti, Cinecittà e Hollywood. Alla ricerca dello scoop definitivo, usavano le loro macchine fotografiche per avvicinarsi ad attori e personaggi pubblici, tra cui Brigitte Bardot, Marlon Brando, Romy Schneider, Richard Burton e Jackie Kennedy, e immortalare il glamour dell'alta società en passant. Questo a volte ha portato a incontri memorabili: Anita Ekberg, protagonista de La Dolce Vita, si difese dagli invadenti paparazzi con arco e frecce, Ron Galella si costò diversi denti nel suo ostinato inseguimento di Marlon Brando.
La mostra PAPARAZZI! è dedicata alla storia, ai metodi e all'estetica della fotografia dei paparazzi, utilizza gli esempi di Lady Diana e Britney Spears per esaminare gli aspetti controversi del genere e, con le serie di Helmut Newton, Anton Corbijn, Alison Jackson e del gruppo di artisti austriaci G.R.A.M., fa luce sul fascino che il fenomeno ha ripetutamente esercitato su altri settori della fotografia e dell'arte.

Notorious, misunderstood, idolized: paparazzi are without a doubt among the most enigmatic figures in the history of photography!
Their pictures, hunted down with equally resourceful and nefarious means, are seen by millions of people, yet the names of the photographers are hardly known, their public reputation is low. The term paparazzi goes back to the photographer of the same name in Federico Fellini's classic film La Dolce Vita and was long considered a dirty word; only recently has the view of the genre's history changed.
Today, the images of outstanding representatives such as Ron Galella or Marcello Geppetti are appreciated as undisguised portraits and testimonies of an era.
PAPARAZZI! brings together around 120 works by some 20 photographers and spans an arc from the late 1950s to the 2000s. The focus is on the 1960s and 1970s, when photographers such as Galella, Geppetti, Tazio Secchiaroli and Elio Sorci defined the profession between Rome and the USA, Cinecittà and Hollywood. In search of the ultimate scoop, they used their cameras to get close to actors and other public figures, including Brigitte Bardot, Marlon Brando, Romy Schneider, Richard Burton and Jackie Kennedy - and en passant captured the glamor of high society. In the process, some memorable encounters took place: Anita Ekberg, star of La Dolce Vita, defended herself against the intrusive paparazzi with bow and arrow, Ron Galella's persistent pursuit of Marlon Brando cost him several teeth.
The exhibition PAPARAZZI! is dedicated to the history, methods, and aesthetics of paparazzi photography, takes a look at the controversial aspects of the genre using the examples of Lady Diana and Britney Spears, and, with series by Helmut Newton, Anton Corbijn, Alison Jackson, and the Austrian artists' group G.R.A.M., sheds light on the fascination that the phenomenon has repeatedly exerted on other areas of photography and on art.
