Sophie Zénon ist mit dem Grand Est vertraut, wo sie mehrere Arbeiten über das Gedächtnis von Landschaften - insbesondere von Kriegslandschaften - durchgeführt hat, und hat sich in einem neuen Projekt auf obsidiale Pflanzen konzentriert. Dieser Begriff bezeichnet in der Botanik Pflanzen, die durch Kriege und Bevölkerungsverschiebungen verbreitet wurden. Die Künstlerin reist durch Lothringen, eine Region in Europa, die im 19. und 20. Jahrhundert die meisten Truppenbewegungen erlebte und heute mit 21 registrierten Arten die meisten obsidialen Pflanzen aufweist. Bei der Beschäftigung mit diesen Pflanzenwanderungen - und im Umkehrschluss mit den Wanderungen von Männern und Frauen - stellt sich die Künstlerin der Herausforderung, der Geschichte durch Bilder eine Form zu geben und zarte Spuren mit den Mitteln der Wissenschaft und Technik sichtbar zu machen. Das physische Eintauchen in die Landschaft, die erhöhte Aufmerksamkeit für das Lebendige und die direkte Verwendung gesammelter oder angebauter Pflanzen bei der Herstellung ihrer Werke lässt sowohl die Poesie als auch die tragischen Erinnerungen der Orte erklingen. Ihr vielseitiger plastischer Ansatz reicht von Pflanzenabdrücken (Fotogrammen) über Landschaftsfotografien und die Reaktivierung von Archiven bis hin zu Prägungen von Stämmen erschossener Bäume. Unterstützt von Botanikern, die sich auf das Thema spezialisiert haben, verbindet Sophie Zénon Wissensgebiete, Naturreiche und Zeiträume durch die Fäden eines organischen und symbiotischen Werks. Die mit La Chambre durchgeführte Residenz (2020-2022) und die Ausstellung bieten die Gelegenheit, sich mit den Bewohnern Lothringens und des Elsass über die künstlerischen, wissenschaftlichen und historischen Aspekte des Projekts auszutauschen.
Sophie Zénon wurde 1965 geboren, sie lebt und arbeitet in Paris. Als ausgebildete Historikerin und Ethnologin hat sie die zeitgenössischen Einstellungen zum Tod im Westen und den Schamanismus in Nordasien untersucht. Seit Anfang der 2000er Jahre entfaltet sie ein Universum, das von Poesie, Literatur, Schrecken und Schönheit, aber auch von Fragen der Erinnerung und des Vergessens, des Verlusts und der Abwesenheit bewohnt wird. Ihre Werke - Fotoserien, Künstlerbücher, Editionen, Videos und Installationen - werden in Frankreich und im Ausland ausgestellt und sind in zahlreichen Sammlungen vertreten.
Familière du Grand Est où elle a mené plusieurs travaux sur la mémoire des paysages – notamment des paysages de guerre –, Sophie Zénon s’est engagée dans un nouveau projet axé sur les plantes obsidionales. Ce terme désigne en botanique les végétaux propagés lors des guerres et des déplacements de population. L’artiste parcourt ainsi la Lorraine, région d’Europe qui a connu aux 19ème et 20ème siècles le plus de mouvements de troupes et compte aujourd’hui le plus de plantes obsidionales, avec 21 espèces répertoriées. En travaillant sur ces migrations végétales – et par ricochet sur celles des hommes et femmes –, l’artiste se confronte au défi de donner une forme à l’Histoire par l’image, de faire apparaître des traces ténues par les moyens de la science et de la technique. L’immersion physique dans le paysage, l’attention accrue au vivant et l’utilisation directe de plantes récoltées ou cultivées dans la fabrication de ses œuvres fait résonner tant la poésie que les mémoires tragiques des lieux. Son approche plastique plurielle va des empreintes de plantes (photogrammes) aux estampages de troncs d’arbres fusillés, en passant par des photographies de paysages et la réactivation d’archives. Épaulée par des botanistes spécialistes du sujet, Sophie Zénon relie des domaines de connaissance, des règnes naturels et des périodes temporelles par les fils d’une œuvre organique et symbiotique. La résidence de création (2020-2022) menée avec La Chambre et l’exposition sont l’occasion d’échanges avec les habitant·es de Lorraine et d’Alsace autour des aspects artistique, scientifique et historique du projet.
Sophie Zénon est née en 1965, elle vit et travaille à Paris. Historienne et ethnologue de formation, elle a étudié les attitudes contemporaines face à la mort en Occident et le chamanisme en Asie septentrionale. Depuis le début des années 2000, elle déploie un univers habité par la poésie, le littéraire, l’effroi et la beauté, mais aussi par les questions de la mémoire et de l’oubli, de la perte et de l’absence. Ses œuvres – séries photographiques, livres d’artiste, éditions, vidéos, installations – sont exposées en France et à l’étranger et figurent dans de nombreuses collections.
Sophie Zénon conosce bene la regione del Grand Est, dove ha realizzato diversi lavori sulla memoria dei paesaggi - in particolare quelli di guerra - e ha intrapreso un nuovo progetto incentrato sulle piante di ossidiana. In botanica, questo termine si riferisce alle piante propagate durante le guerre e i movimenti di popolazione. L'artista attraversa così la Lorena, la regione d'Europa che ha visto il maggior numero di movimenti di truppe nel XIX e XX secolo e che oggi possiede il maggior numero di piante di ossidiana, con 21 specie censite. Lavorando su queste migrazioni vegetali - e di rimbalzo su quelle di uomini e donne - l'artista si confronta con la sfida di dare forma alla Storia attraverso le immagini, di far apparire tracce tenui attraverso i mezzi della scienza e della tecnologia. L'immersione fisica nel paesaggio, la maggiore attenzione al vivente e l'uso diretto di piante raccolte o coltivate nella realizzazione delle sue opere fanno risuonare sia la poesia che la memoria tragica dei luoghi. Il suo approccio poliedrico all'arte spazia dalle stampe di piante (fotogrammi) ai timbri di tronchi d'albero abbattuti, passando per le fotografie di paesaggi e la riattivazione di archivi. Supportata da botanici specializzati in materia, Sophie Zénon collega campi di conoscenza, regni naturali e periodi temporali attraverso i fili di un lavoro organico e simbiotico. La residenza creativa (2020-2022) con La Chambre e la mostra saranno un'occasione di scambio con gli abitanti della Lorena e dell'Alsazia sugli aspetti artistici, scientifici e storici del progetto.
Sophie Zénon è nata nel 1965 e vive e lavora a Parigi. Storica ed etnologa di formazione, ha studiato gli atteggiamenti contemporanei nei confronti della morte in Occidente e lo sciamanesimo nell'Asia settentrionale. Dall'inizio degli anni Duemila, ha sviluppato un universo abitato dalla poesia, dalla letteratura, dallo spavento e dalla bellezza, ma anche dalle questioni della memoria e dell'oblio, della perdita e dell'assenza. Le sue opere - serie fotografiche, libri d'artista, edizioni, video, installazioni - sono esposte in Francia e all'estero e si trovano in numerose collezioni.
Familiar with the Grand Est where she has conducted several works on the memory of landscapes - particularly landscapes of war -, Sophie Zénon has embarked on a new project focused on obsidian plants. In botany, this term refers to plants propagated during wars and population displacements. The artist is thus traveling through Lorraine, the region of Europe that experienced the most troop movements in the 19th and 20th centuries and that today has the most obsidian plants, with 21 species listed. By working on these plant migrations - and by ricochet on those of men and women - the artist is confronted with the challenge of giving form to History through images, of making tenuous traces appear by the means of science and technique. The physical immersion in the landscape, the increased attention to the living and the direct use of harvested or cultivated plants in the making of his works makes the poetry as well as the tragic memories of the places resonate. Her multi-faceted plastic approach ranges from plant prints (photograms) to stamps of shot tree trunks, through landscape photographs and the reactivation of archives. Assisted by botanists specializing in the subject, Sophie Zénon links fields of knowledge, natural kingdoms and time periods through the threads of an organic and symbiotic work. The creative residency (2020-2022) with La Chambre and the exhibition are an opportunity to exchange with the inhabitants of Lorraine and Alsace on the artistic, scientific and historical aspects of the project.
Sophie Zénon was born in 1965 and lives and works in Paris. A historian and ethnologist by training, she has studied contemporary attitudes to death in the West and shamanism in Northern Asia. Since the early 2000s, she has developed a universe inhabited by poetry, literature, fear and beauty, but also by questions of memory and oblivion, loss and absence. Her works - photographic series, artist's books, editions, videos, installations - are exhibited in France and abroad and are included in numerous collections.
