Larry Fink – Feeling the Experience

Der im Dezember 2023 verstorbene Larry Fink arbeitete über 65 Jahre als Fotograf. Seine Arbeiten waren in Einzelausstellungen u.a. im Museum of Modern Art und Whitney Museum in New York zu sehen. Die Galerie Bene Taschen freut sich, eine Auswahl aus seinen Werkgruppen Social Graces, Somewhere There‘s Music, The Vanities und Boxing unter dem Titel Larry Fink – Feeling the Experience zu präsentieren.
Larry Fink sammelte erste fotografischen Erfahrungen in New York und zog später von Brooklyn nach Pennsylvania. Er besuchte die New Yorker New School for Social Research, die sein Interesse an soziologischen Sichtweisen weckte. Auch seine Bezüge zur Jazz-Musik haben einen frühen Ursprung; Jazz begleitete ihn seit seiner Kindheit. Er selbst spielte Piano und Harmonika. Die Bilder aus der Reihe Somewhere there’s Music zeugen von den Begegnungen zwischen dem Fotografen und den Musikerinnen und Musikern. Vor seiner Kamera standen Jazz-Legenden wie John Coltrane oder Finks großes Idol Jimmy Rushing, welchen er bereits 1957 getroffen hatte.
Ab Ende der 1980s setzte Fink die transatlantische Boxindustrie in Szene und begleitete u.a. Mike Tyson und Jimmy Jacobs. Seine Serie Boxing zeigt viele ikonische Momente aus legendären Boxkämpfen.
Seit jeher hat sich Fink mit sozialpsychologischen und politischen Themen auseinandergesetzt und die Verhältnisse, Friktionen und Entwicklungen zwischen der Arbeiterklasse und der Oberschicht eingefangen. Als geladener Gast oder offizieller Fotograf dokumentierte er in The Vanities soziale Eliten auf Partys und Galas und positionierte sich selbst dabei stets als stiller Beobachter, außerhalb des Geschehens. In teils intimen Momenten fing er die Interaktionen der Gäste – mal einen Blick über die Schulter, mal ein Lächeln oder eine ungestellte Geste - ein.
In Social Graces stehen diese Werke den Fotografien von der Familie Sabatine aus Pennsylvania gegenüber. Während eines Besuchs im kleinstädtischen Martins Creek dokumentiert er die familiären Treffen zu verschiedenen Anlässen, wie zum Beispiel einem achten Geburtstag. Seine fotografische Arbeit umfasst somit ein breites und kontrastreiches Spektrum, das von alltäglichen Familienszenen bis hin zu elitären Veranstaltungen reicht. Fink formt somit ein Gesellschaftsbild, das unvoreingenommen unterschiedliche soziale Gruppen verbindet. Sein Lebenswerk ist gleichzeitig der Spiegel seines Gesellschaftsbildes. Für ihn stand der Mensch stets im Mittelpunkt.

Larry Fink, décédé en décembre 2023, a travaillé comme photographe pendant plus de 65 ans. Ses travaux ont fait l'objet d'expositions individuelles, notamment au Museum of Modern Art et au Whitney Museum de New York. La galerie Bene Taschen est heureuse de présenter une sélection de ses groupes d'œuvres Social Graces, Somewhere There's Music, The Vanities et Boxing sous le titre Larry Fink - Feeling the Experience.
Larry Fink a fait ses premières expériences photographiques à New York et a ensuite quitté Brooklyn pour la Pennsylvanie. Il a fréquenté la New School for Social Research de New York, qui a éveillé son intérêt pour les points de vue sociologiques. Ses références à la musique de jazz ont également une origine précoce ; le jazz l'accompagnait depuis son enfance. Il jouait lui-même du piano et de l'harmonica. Les visuels de la série Somewhere there's Music témoignent des rencontres entre le photographe et les musiciens. Des légendes du jazz comme John Coltrane ou la grande idole de Fink, Jimmy Rushing, qu'il avait déjà rencontré en 1957, ont posé devant son objectif.
A partir de la fin des années 1980, Fink a mis en scène l'industrie de la boxe transatlantique et a accompagné entre autres Mike Tyson et Jimmy Jacobs. Sa série Boxing montre de nombreux moments iconiques de combats de boxe légendaires.
Depuis toujours, Fink s'est penché sur des thèmes socio-psychologiques et politiques et a capturé les rapports, les frictions et les évolutions entre la classe ouvrière et la classe supérieure. En tant qu'invité ou photographe officiel, il a documenté dans The Vanities les élites sociales lors de fêtes et de galas, se positionnant toujours comme un observateur silencieux, en dehors de l'action. Dans des moments parfois intimes, il a capturé les interactions des invités - parfois un regard par-dessus l'épaule, parfois un sourire ou un geste non posé.
Dans Social Graces, ces œuvres sont confrontées aux photographies de la famille Sabatine de Pennsylvanie. Lors d'une visite dans la petite ville de Martins Creek, il documente les réunions familiales à l'occasion de différents événements, comme un huitième anniversaire. Son travail photographique couvre ainsi un spectre large et contrasté, allant de scènes familiales quotidiennes à des événements élitistes. Fink forme ainsi une image de la société qui relie sans préjugés différents groupes sociaux. L'œuvre de sa vie est en même temps le miroir de sa vision de la société. Pour lui, l'être humain a toujours été au centre de ses préoccupations.

Fink ha sempre esplorato temi socio-psicologici e politici, catturando le relazioni, gli attriti e gli sviluppi tra le classi lavoratrici e quelle superiori. Come invitato o fotografo ufficiale, ha documentato le élite sociali a feste e serate di gala in The Vanities, ponendosi sempre come osservatore silenzioso, al di fuori dell'azione. In momenti a volte intimi, ha catturato le interazioni degli ospiti - a volte uno sguardo da sopra la spalla, a volte un sorriso o un gesto non posato.
In Social Graces, queste opere sono accostate alle fotografie della famiglia Sabatine della Pennsylvania. Durante una visita alla cittadina di Martins Creek, l'artista documenta le riunioni di famiglia in varie occasioni, come un ottavo compleanno. Il suo lavoro fotografico abbraccia quindi uno spettro ampio e contrastante, che va dalle scene familiari quotidiane agli eventi d'élite. Fink crea così un'immagine della società che collega in modo imparziale i diversi gruppi sociali. Il lavoro della sua vita è anche uno specchio della sua immagine della società. Per lui le persone erano sempre al centro.

Larry Fink, who died in December 2023, worked as a photographer for over 65 years. His work has been shown in solo exhibitions at the Museum of Modern Art and the Whitney Museum in New York, among others. The Bene Taschen Gallery is pleased to present a selection from his series Social Graces, Somewhere There's Music, The Vanities and Boxing under the title Larry Fink – Feeling the Experience.
Larry Fink gained his first photographic experiences in New York and later moved from Brooklyn to Pennsylvania. He attended the New School for Social Research in New York, which sparked his interest in sociological perspectives. His relationship to jazz music also has an early origin; jazz accompanied him since his childhood. He himself played piano and harmonica. The visuals from the series Somewhere there's Music bear witness to the encounters between the photographer and the musicians. Jazz legends such as John Coltrane and Fink's great idol Jimmy Rushing, whom he had already met in 1957, stood in front of his camera.
From the late 1980s, Fink focused on the transatlantic boxing industry, accompanying Mike Tyson and Jimmy Jacobs, among others. His Boxing series features many iconic moments from legendary boxing matches.
Fink has always been interested in socio-psychological and political issues, capturing the relationships, frictions and developments between the working and upper classes. As an invited guest or official photographer, he documented social elites at parties and galas in The Vanities, always positioning himself as a silent observer, outside of the action. He captured the interactions of the guests in sometimes intimate moments – a glance over the shoulder, a smile or an unposed gesture.
In Social Graces, these works are juxtaposed with photographs of the Sabatine family from Pennsylvania. During a visit to the small town of Martins Creek, he documented family gatherings for various occasions, such as an eighth birthday. His photographic work thus encompasses a broad and contrasting spectrum, ranging from everyday family scenes to elitist events. In this way, Fink creates a social portrait that connects different social groups in an unbiased way. His life's work is also a mirror of his social view. For him, the human being has always been at the centre of attention.
