Gotthard Schuh
Die 51 Fotografien der Ausstellung bringen diejenigen Aspekte von Gotthard Schuhs OEuvre zum Vorschein, die den Bildjournalisten als etablierten Link der Schweizer Fotografiegeschichte auszeichnen. Als Fotoreporter des 20. Jahrhunderts, dessen Bildsprache der Neuen Sachlichkeit und dem Neuen Sehen entsprang, korrelierten Schuhs Lebensdaten mit einschlägigen welthistorischen Ereignissen. Dies resultierte in einer heute noch aktuellen Dialektik von Form und Inhalt, die auch in Schuhs Italienbildern augenscheinlich heraustritt. Schuh wusste wie kaum ein anderer Fotograf seiner Zeit, die formale Bildkomposition mit aussagekräftiger Sensibilität ins Gleichgewicht zu bringen. Ferner wahrte Schuh den Zufall in seinem Schaffensprozess. Galerie 94 zelebriert mit Italien eine Komponente aus Schuhs Werk, in der sich der fotografische Reisebericht und das fotojournalistische Archiv in neuer Form zusammenschließen. Insofern lädt die Ausstellung dazu ein, Gotthard Schuhs Fotografien der italienischen Nation, losgelöst aus den Sequenzen des Fotobuchs, neu zu erleben.
In der Ausstellung Italien wird die akribische Intensität, die sich sowohl in der Produktion als auch in den Bildaussagen Gotthard Schuhs als gestalterische Konstante hindurchzieht, greifbar. Denn im Kern war und bleibt Gotthard Schuh ein Geschichtenerzähler, der zwischen resümierendem Einzelbild und komplementären Bildgruppen alterniert, um seine durchwegs an Poesie grenzenden Aussagen zu gestalten. Italien würdigt Schuhs gestalterisches Verständnis für das menschliche Moment und erzählt vom facettenreichen Leben der ruralen und städtischen Bevölkerung aus dem Land, wo die Zitronen blühen. Die Fotografien der Ausstellung Italien beschäftigen sich analog zum originären Buchprojekt Schuhs mit den übergeordneten Themen Architektur und Landschaft, Berufshandwerk und Tradition sowie Porträtaufnahmen. In Letzteren begegnen uns Frauen, Männer und Kinder in unterschiedlichsten Kombinationen. In ihrer Gesamtheit beschwört die Ausstellung ein zusammengehöriges Geflecht der gebauten und natürlichen Umgebung sowie der Menschheit Italiens herauf, das trotz seiner Spezifizität universalistische Züge annimmt. Die kuratierte Auswahl der Originaldrucke resultiert in einer bildgewordenen Conditio humana, deren lyrisches Gehalt an die fortwährende Aktualität Gotthard Schuhs attestiert.
Les 51 photographies de l'exposition mettent en lumière les aspects de l'œuvre de Gotthard Schuh qui font de ce photojournaliste un lien établi dans l'histoire de la photographie suisse. En tant que photoreporter du 20e siècle, dont le langage visuel est issu de la Nouvelle Objectivité et de la Nouvelle Vision, les dates de la vie de Schuh étaient en corrélation avec les événements historiques mondiaux correspondants. Il en résulte une dialectique de la forme et du contenu, toujours d'actualité aujourd'hui, qui transparaît également dans les photos d'Italie de Schuh. Schuh savait, comme peu d'autres photographes de son époque, équilibrer la composition formelle de l'image avec une sensibilité expressive. De plus, Schuh préservait le hasard dans son processus de création. Avec l'Italie, la Galerie 94 célèbre une composante de l'œuvre de Schuh dans laquelle le récit de voyage photographique et l'archive photojournalistique s'unissent sous une nouvelle forme. En ce sens, l'exposition invite à revivre les photographies de la nation italienne de Gotthard Schuh, détachées des séquences du livre de photos.
Dans l'exposition Italie, l'intensité méticuleuse qui traverse aussi bien la production que les déclarations d'images de Gotthard Schuh comme une constante créative devient palpable. Car au fond, Gotthard Schuh était et reste un conteur d'histoires qui alterne entre des images individuelles résumées et des groupes d'images complémentaires afin de donner forme à ses déclarations qui confinent toutes à la poésie. Italie rend hommage à la compréhension créative de Schuh pour l'instant humain et raconte la vie aux multiples facettes de la population rurale et urbaine du pays où fleurissent les citrons. Les photographies de l'exposition Italie traitent, de manière analogue au projet de livre original de Schuh, des thèmes généraux de l'architecture et du paysage, de l'artisanat professionnel et de la tradition ainsi que des portraits. Dans ces derniers, nous rencontrons des femmes, des hommes et des enfants dans les combinaisons les plus diverses. Dans son ensemble, l'exposition évoque un réseau cohérent de l'environnement bâti et naturel ainsi que de l'humanité italienne qui, malgré sa spécificité, revêt des traits universalistes. La sélection des estampes originales par le curateur aboutit à une condition humaine mise en image, dont le contenu lyrique atteste de l'actualité permanente de Gotthard Schuh.

Come fotoreporter del XX secolo, il cui linguaggio visivo è scaturito dalla Nuova Oggettività e dalla Nuova Visione, le date della vita di Schuh sono correlate a eventi storici mondiali rilevanti. Ne è scaturita una dialettica tra forma e contenuto che è ancora attuale e che è evidente anche nelle immagini dell'Italia di Schuh. Schuh sapeva meglio di quasi ogni altro fotografo del suo tempo come bilanciare la composizione formale dell'immagine con la sensibilità espressiva. Inoltre, Schuh ha preservato il caso nel suo processo creativo. La Galerie 94 celebra con l'Italia una componente dell'opera di Schuh in cui il diario di viaggio fotografico e l'archivio fotogiornalistico si fondono in una nuova forma. In questo senso, la mostra ci invita a vivere le fotografie di Gotthard Schuh sulla nazione italiana in un modo nuovo, distaccato dalle sequenze del libro fotografico.
Nella mostra italiana, l'intensità meticolosa che attraversa sia la produzione che le dichiarazioni pittoriche di Gotthard Schuh come costante creativa diventa tangibile. In sostanza, Gotthard Schuh era e rimane un narratore che alterna la sintesi di singole immagini a gruppi di immagini complementari per dare forma alle sue affermazioni, che sfiorano costantemente la poesia. In quest'ultimo, incontriamo donne, uomini e bambini nelle più diverse combinazioni. Nel suo insieme, la mostra evoca una rete coesa di ambiente costruito e naturale e di umanità che, nonostante la sua specificità, assume tratti universalistici. La selezione curata di stampe originali si traduce in una Conditio humana resa figurativa, il cui contenuto lirico testimonia la perpetua attualità di Gotthard Schuh.
The 51 photographs presented in the exhibition shed light on the distinguished aspects of Gotthard Schuh’s oeuvre that establish Schuh as an irreplaceable link in the history of Swiss photography. As a photojournalist of the 20th century whose visual language sprang from the movements of New Objectivity and New Vision, Schuh’s life correlated with significant world-historical events. This resulted in an ever-relevant dialectic of form and content which is also evident in Schuh’s images of Italy. Gotthard Schuh achieved a satisfying balance of image composition and expressive sensitivity. Furthermore, Schuh accepted and respected the unpredictability of coincidence in his creative process. With the exhibition Italy, Galerie 94 celebrated a component of Schuh’s oeuvre in which the photographic travelogue and the photojournalistic archive fuse together in a new form of visual expression. In this respect, the exhibition invites the viewer to experience Gotthard Schuh’s photographs of the Italian nation in a new way, detached from the set sequences of the photo book.
Italy explores the meticulous intensity that characterizes both the production and the photographic message of Gotthard Schuh’s work. Overall, Schuh was and remains a storyteller who alternates between conclusive singular images and interrelated groups of images to convey his oftentimes poetic statements. Italy pays tribute to Schuh’s creative understanding of the human moment and recounts the multifaceted lives of the rural and urban populations of the land where the lemons bloom. Analogous to Schuh’s original book project, the photographs in the exhibition deal with the overarching themes of architecture and landscape, professional craftsmanship and tradition, and portraiture. In the latter, we encounter women, men, and children in various constellations. In short, the exhibition evokes a cohesive web of Italy’s built and natural environment and its inhabitants. Despite the exhibition’s thematic specificity, it succeeds in taking on a sense of universality. The curated selection of original prints results in a pictorial Conditio Humana, whose lyrical content attests to Gotthard Schuh’s neverending relevance.
