Im Nahen und Mittleren Osten liegen die Wurzeln von Judentum, Christentum und Islam. Durch das Zusammenleben der Menschen entwickelte sich ein faszinierendes Geflecht von Kulturen, religiöser Praxis und ethischen Maßstäben. Mittlerweile aber wurde der Orient mehr und mehr auch zu einer Quelle von Fanatismus, Engstirnigkeit und Gewalt im Namen von Religion und staatlicher Autokratie.
Die Fotografin Katharina Eglau und ihr Ehemann, der Nahost-Korrespondent Martin Gehlen, beschäftigten sich mit der Schönheit, aber auch mit den Krisen des Orients.
Katharina Eglau verstand sich selbst nie als Nachrichtenfotografin, sondern als Mittlerin zwischen den Menschen des Nahen Ostens oder Nordafrikas und denjenigen, die ihren Bildern in Medien und Ausstellungen der westlichen Welt begegnen. Mit ihrem persönlichen Blick hält sie den Ausdruck von Emotionen fest, die allen Menschen auf dem Erdball vertraut sind.

Le Proche et le Moyen-Orient sont le berceau du judaïsme, du christianisme et de l'islam. La cohabitation des hommes a donné naissance à un fascinant réseau de cultures, de pratiques religieuses et de normes éthiques. Mais entre-temps, l'Orient est aussi devenu de plus en plus une source de fanatisme, d'étroitesse d'esprit et de violence au nom de la religion et de l'autocratie étatique.
La photographe Katharina Eglau et son mari, le correspondant au Proche-Orient Martin Gehlen, se sont intéressés à la beauté, mais aussi aux crises de l'Orient.
Katharina Eglau ne s'est jamais considérée comme une photographe d'actualités, mais comme une intermédiaire entre les habitants du Proche-Orient ou d'Afrique du Nord et ceux qui rencontrent ses images dans les médias et les expositions du monde occidental. Avec son regard personnel, elle capture l'expression d'émotions familières à tous les habitants du globe.

Le radici dell'ebraismo, del cristianesimo e dell'islam affondano nel Vicino e Medio Oriente. Grazie alla convivenza tra i popoli, si è sviluppata un'affascinante rete di culture, pratiche religiose e norme etiche. Nel frattempo, però, l'Oriente è diventato sempre più una fonte di fanatismo, grettezza e violenza in nome della religione e dell'autocrazia statale.
La fotografa Katharina Eglau e suo marito, il corrispondente dal Medio Oriente Martin Gehlen, si sono concentrati sulla bellezza, ma anche sulle crisi dell'Oriente.
Katharina Eglau non si è mai vista come una fotografa di cronaca, ma come una mediatrice tra le popolazioni del Medio Oriente o del Nord Africa e coloro che incontrano le sue immagini nei media e nelle mostre del mondo occidentale. Con il suo sguardo personale, cattura l'espressione di emozioni che sono familiari a tutti in tutto il mondo.

The roots of Judaism, Christianity and Islam lie in the Near and Middle East. As a result of people living together, a fascinating network of cultures, religious practices and ethical standards developed. In the meantime, however, the Orient has increasingly become a source of fanaticism, narrow-mindedness and violence in the name of religion and state autocracy.
The photographer Katharina Eglau and her husband, the Middle East correspondent Martin Gehlen, focused on the beauty, but also the crises of the Orient.
Katharina Eglau never saw herself as a news photographer, but as a mediator between the people of the Middle East or North Africa and those who encounter her images in the media and exhibitions of the Western world. With her personal gaze, she captures the expression of emotions that are familiar to everyone around the globe.
