Ein Flohmarktfund in den 1970er Jahren hat zur Entstehung einer einmaligen Sammlung mit nunmehr 500.000 Fotografien geführt. Heute gehören Ruth und Peter Herzog zu den wichtigsten Fotosammlern weltweit. Die Bestände der Sammlung stammen aus der Frühzeit der 1839 erfundenen Technik und reichen bis in die 1970er Jahre. Sie decken damit die gesamte Geschichte der analogen Fotografie und all ihrer Entwicklungen und Materialien, den Platten, Emulsionen, Chemikalien, Papieren und Apparaten ab. Gerade für das 19. Jahrhundert hat das Sammlerpaar wichtige Entdeckungen gemacht, die das Verständnis für die bewegte Geschichte der Fotografie erweitert haben.
Kein Bildmedium ist so gut geeignet, Geschichte und Geschichten zu erzählen, wie die Fotografie. Die Myriaden anonymer Meisterwerke aus der Fotosammlung bringen eine schier unüberschaubare Vielzahl von Motiven und Themen rund um den Globus ans Licht. So finden sich neben den bekannten Pionieren des Mediums wie Adolphe Disdéri, Gustave Le Gray, Eugène Atget, Fred Boissonnas, Charles Nègre und Felice Beato sowie anderen prominenten Fotografen – Paul Martial, Hans Hinz – vor allem bisher unbekannte Amateurfotografen. Ruth und Peter Herzog haben nichts Geringeres als eine fotografische Enzyklopädie des Lebens im Industriezeitalter zusammengetragen.
Erstmals wird ein umfassendes Portrait der Fotosammlung nun in der Schweiz gezeigt. Die Ausstellung präsentiert anhand von 400 Objekten ihre höchst individuelle Ordnung und die darin artikulierte neue Sicht auf die Geschichte der Fotografie. Verhandelt werden zentrale Schwerpunkte der Sammlung, aber auch Fragen zum Sammeln von Fotografie, zum Verhältnis von Archiv und Museum und nicht zuletzt zum Verhältnis von Fotografie und Kunst weit über die bereits kanonisierte Kunstfotografie hinaus. Dabei zeigt die Ausstellung, dass das Medium analoge Fotografie höchst aktuell ist und faszinierende Rückschlüsse auf unseren heutigen digitalen Bildgebrauch erlaubt.

Une trouvaille sur un marché aux puces dans les années 1970 a mené à la naissance d’une collection unique au monde qui réunit désormais 500 000 photographies. Aujourd’hui, Ruth et Peter Herzog comptent parmi les grands collectionneurs de photographies à l’échelle internationale. Les fonds de leur collection datent des débuts de la technique photographique en 1839 jusqu’aux années 1970. Ils couvrent ainsi entièrement l’histoire de la photographie argentique, de ses développements et de ses matériaux – plaques, émulsions, produits chimiques, papiers et appareils. Pour le XIXe siècle en particulier, le couple de collectionneurs a fait d’importantes découvertes qui ont permis d’affiner la compréhension de l’histoire mouvementée de la photographie.
La photographie est le médium visuel le plus adapté pour raconter la petite et la grande histoire. Les myriades de chef-d’œuvres anonymes de la collection photographique mettent en lumière une pluralité presque insaisissable de motifs et de thèmes aux quatre coins du monde. Ainsi, aux côtés des illustres pionniers de ce médium – Adolphe Disdéri, Gustav Le Gray, Eugène Atget, Fred Boissonnas, Charles Nègre, Felice Beato – et d’autres éminents photographes – Paul Martial, Hans Hinz – figurent pour l’essentiel des photographes amateurs jusqu’ici inconnus. Ruth et Peter Herzog ont, ni plus ni moins, constitué une encyclopédie photographique de la vie à l’ère industrielle.
C’est la première fois que leur collection de photographies est présentée dans une manière exhaustive en Suisse. À travers 400 pièces, l’exposition en montre le caractère singulier et pose un regard nouveau sur l’histoire de la photographie. Elle aborde des axes centraux de la collection, mais aussi des questions sur l’activité de collectionneur de photographies, sur le rapport entre archives et musée, et enfin sur les liens entre l’art et la photographie, au-delà des canons de la photographie artistique. L’exposition témoigne du caractère très actuel de la photographie argentique et de la capacité de ce médium à nous éclairer sur notre usage du numérique aujourd’hui.

It all started in the 1970s with a serendipitous flea market find: over the past decades, Ruth and Peter Herzog have built one of the most important photography collections, which now encompasses no fewer than five hundred thousand artifacts. Ranging from the early days of the medium, which was invented in 1839, to the 1970s, the collection’s holdings span the complete history of analog photography, reflecting its manifold developments and physical materials, its plates, emulsions, chemical agents, papers, and devices. For the nineteenth century, in particular, the Herzogs’ research led them to important discoveries that have greatly enhanced our understanding of the eventful history of photography.
No visual medium is better at telling stories and relating history than photography. The innumerable masterworks by anonymous photographers in the Herzogs’ collection throw light on an overwhelming abundance of motifs and themes from around the globe. In addition to pieces by well-known pioneers of the medium such as Adolphe Disdéri, Gustave Le Gray, Eugène Atget, Fred Boissonnas, Charles Nègre, and Felice Beato as well as other prominent practitioners—Paul Martial, Hans Hinz—the collection is a treasure trove of shots by previously obscure amateur photographers. What Ruth and Peter Herzog have gathered is nothing less than a photographic encyclopedia of life in the industrial age.
The first comprehensive presentation in Switzerland showcases four hundred objects to illustrate the unconventional organization of this eminent collection and the novel perspective on the history of photography it articulates. The exhibition spotlights key themes of the collection and addresses questions around the photography collectors’ work and the relation between archive and museum. Not least importantly, it probes the interplay between photography and art well beyond the accepted canon of fine-art photography. The selection demonstrates that the medium of analog photography is alive and as relevant as ever and offers fascinating insights into our contemporary use of digital images.
