Steve McCurry. Icons präsentiert zum ersten Mal in der Region Venetien eine Auswahl von mehr als 100 Fotografien, die eine vollständige Darstellung seines besonderen Stils und seiner exklusiven ästhetischen Vision bieten können. Der Ausstellungsrundgang begleitet den Besucher bei der Entdeckung seines Talents, mit Bildern von großer emotionaler Wirkung und sicherer Faszination. Ziel der Ausstellung ist es, die zahlreichen künstlerischen und Reportage-Erfahrungen des großen Fotografen zu beleuchten: angefangen von seinen ersten historischen Reisen nach Indien und dann nach Afghanistan, wo Steve McCurry die Gelegenheit hatte, den Mudschaheddin zur Zeit des Krieges gegen Russland zu folgen, als der Zugang zu diesem Land für westliche Besucher verboten war. Aus Afghanistan kommt Sharbat Gula, das Mädchen, das durch die Titelseite von National Geographic berühmt wurde und das der Fotograf im Flüchtlingslager von Peshawar in Pakistan kennt.
Durch seinen besonderen fotografischen Stil lenkt Steve McCurry seine Aufmerksamkeit auf die Menschlichkeit des Themas. Mit seinen Aufnahmen vermittelt er das menschliche Gesicht, das in jedem Winkel der Erde verborgen ist, selbst in den dramatischsten. Wenn Henri Cartier-Bresson "das Auge seines Jahrhunderts" (des zwanzigsten Jahrhunderts) war, so ist McCurry wahrscheinlich der zeitgenössische Fotograf, der am ehesten geneigt ist, sein Vermächtnis aufzugreifen. Dank seiner ausgeprägten Sensibilität ist er in der Lage, tief in die gewählten Themen einzudringen und die tiefe Ähnlichkeit aller Individuen auf der Erde jenseits der soziokulturellen Schwierigkeiten aufzudecken. Der Fotograf versucht immer, den Situationen ein Gesicht zu geben, in die er als Reporter eingetaucht ist, besonders wenn diese Umstände äußerst tragisch sind.
Die Neugier ist der Motor seiner Suche, die ihn seit seiner Jugend dazu brachte, jede Grenze zu überschreiten, sei es physisch, sprachlich oder kulturell. In jedem seiner Fotos erzählt uns Steve McCurry eine Geschichte, die, einmal enthüllt, in der Lage ist, die Komplexität eines ganzen Kontextes zu vermitteln. Dies sind McCurrys Worte: "Die meisten meiner Fotos sind in Menschen verwurzelt. Ich suche nach dem Moment, in dem die echteste Seele erscheint, wenn sich die Erfahrung in das Gesicht eines Menschen einprägt. Ich versuche zu vermitteln, was eine gebildete Person in einem breiteren Kontext sein kann, den wir die menschliche Existenz nennen könnten. Ich möchte das viszerale Gefühl der Schönheit und des Staunens vermitteln, das ich auf meinen Reisen vorfand, wenn sich die Überraschung, ein Fremder zu sein, mit der Freude der Vertrautheit vermischt".
"Die Stadt Conegliano - so die Kulturstadträtin Gaia Maschio - fühlt sich geehrt, einen Künstler willkommen zu heißen, der durch die Kunst der Fotografie das Wesen der Zeitgenossenschaft einzufangen vermag und sie zu einem Zeugnis historischer Momente macht.
Mit diesen Werken öffnet sich unsere Stadt wieder einmal dem internationalen Panorama und bietet Bürgern und Touristen die Möglichkeit, sich der Schönheit durch fotografische Aufnahmen zu nähern, die das Wesen des Augenblicks einfangen.
Und es ist ein Wunsch, den die Verwaltung den Menschen, die die Ausstellung sehen werden, erfüllen möchte: das Bewusstsein für die Beobachtung der Fotografie dieses großen Künstlers zu schärfen und in der Lage zu sein, die gleiche "Schönheit" im Alltag, in den Gesichtern, denen wir begegnen, und in der Landschaft, die uns umgibt, zu finden. Steve McCurry sagt: "Wenn Sie wissen, wie man darauf wartet, dass die Menschen Ihre Kamera vergessen und ihre Seele aus dem Freien kommt", denn nach dem gleichen Prinzip wünsche ich, liebe Besucher, dass Sie in der Lage sind, die Seele des Alltags einzufangen.
Steve McCurry. Icons presenta, per la prima volta nella regione Veneto, una selezione di oltre 100 fotografie, capace di fornire una completa rappresentazione del suo particolare stile e della sua esclusiva visione estetica. Il percorso espositivo accompagnerà il visitatore alla scoperta del suo talento, con immagini di grande impatto emotivo e di sicura fascinazione. L’esposizione ha l’ambizione di gettar luce sulle molteplici esperienze artistiche e di reportage del grande fotografo: a partire dai primi storici viaggi in India e poi in Afghanistan dove Steve McCurry ebbe l’opportunità di seguire i Mujaheddin al tempo della guerra contro la Russia, quando l’accesso al paese era interdetto ai visitatori occidentali. Proprio dall’Afghanistan proviene Sharbat Gula, la ragazza resa celebre dalla prima pagina del National Geographic e conosciuta dal fotografo nel campo profughi di Peshawar in Pakistan.
Attraverso il suo particolare stile fotografico, Steve McCurry pone la propria attenzione sull’umanità del soggetto. Con i suoi scatti ci trasmette il volto umano che si cela in ogni angolo della terra, anche nei più drammatici. Se Henri Cartier-Bresson è stato “l’occhio del suo secolo” (il Novecento), McCurry è probabilmente il fotografo contemporaneo più incline a raccoglierne l’eredità. Grazie alla sua spiccata sensibilità, è capace infatti di penetrare in profondità dei soggetti scelti, svelando la profonda somiglianza di tutti gli individui sulla terra, al di là delle difficoltà socio-culturali. Il fotografo cerca sempre di attribuire un volto alle situazioni in cui si trova immerso da reporter, soprattutto se tali circostanze si presentano estremamente tragiche.
La curiosità è il motore della sua ricerca, capace di spingerlo, fin da adolescente, ad attraversare ogni confine, fosse esso fisico, linguistico e culturale. In ogni sua foto Steve McCurry ci racconta una storia che, una volta svelata, è in grado di comunicare la complessità di un intero contesto.
Queste le parole di McCurry: “La maggior parte delle mie foto è radicata nella gente. Cerco il momento in cui si affaccia l’anima più genuina, in cui l’esperienza s’imprime sul volto di una persona. Cerco di trasmettere ciò che può essere una persona colta in un contesto più ampio che potremmo chiamare la condizione umana. Voglio trasmettere il senso viscerale della bellezza e della meraviglia che ho trovato di fronte a me, durante i miei viaggi, quando la sorpresa dell’essere estraneo si mescola alla gioia della familiarità.”
“La città di Conegliano –afferma l’Assessore alla Cultura, Gaia Maschio – è onorata di accogliere un artista che attraverso l’arte della fotografia riesce a cogliere l’essenza della contemporaneità facendo in modo che la stessa diventi testimonianza di momenti storici.
Ospitando queste opere la nostra città si apre ancora una volta al panorama internazionale offrendo alla cittadinanza e ai turisti un’opportunità di avvicinamento alla bellezza attraverso scatti fotografici che sanno cogliere l’essenza del momento.
Ed è un augurio questo che l’amministrazione vuole fare alle persone che vedranno la mostra: sensibilizzare all’osservazione della fotografia di questo grande artista e riuscire a trovare la stessa “bellezza” nella quotidianità, nei volti che incrociamo e nel paesaggio che ci circonda.
Dice Steve McCurry: “se sai aspettare le persone si dimenticano della tua macchina fotografica e la loro anima esce allo scoperto”, per lo stesso principio io, cari visitatori, vi auguro di riuscire a cogliere l’anima della quotidianità”.

The exhibition path will accompany the visitor to discover his talent, with images of great emotional impact and sure fascination. The exhibition has the ambition to shed light on the many artistic and reportage experiences of the great photographer: starting from the first historical trips to India and then to Afghanistan where Steve McCurry had the opportunity to follow the Mujaheddin at the time of the war against Russia, when access to the country was forbidden to Western visitors. Just from Afghanistan comes Sharbat Gula, the girl made famous by the front page of National Geographic and known by the photographer in the refugee camp of Peshawar in Pakistan.
Through his particular photographic style, Steve McCurry focuses his attention on the humanity of the subject. With his shots he transmits us the human face that is hidden in every corner of the earth, even in the most dramatic. If Henri Cartier-Bresson was "the eye of his century" (the twentieth century), McCurry is probably the contemporary photographer most inclined to take up his legacy. Thanks to his marked sensitivity, he is capable of penetrating deeply into the subjects chosen, revealing the profound similarity of all individuals on earth, beyond the socio-cultural difficulties. The photographer always tries to attribute a face to the situations in which he finds himself immersed as a reporter, especially if these circumstances are extremely tragic.
Curiosity is the engine of his search, able to push him, since he was a teenager, to cross every border, be it physical, linguistic or cultural. In each of his photos, Steve McCurry tells us a story that, once revealed, is able to communicate the complexity of an entire context. These are McCurry's words: "Most of my photos are rooted in people. I look for the moment when the most genuine soul appears, when the experience is imprinted on a person's face. I try to convey what an educated person can be in a broader context that we might call the human condition. I want to convey the visceral sense of beauty and wonder that I have found in front of me, during my travels, when the surprise of being a stranger is mixed with the joy of familiarity".

And it is a wish that the administration wants to do to the people who will see the exhibition: to raise awareness of the observation of the photography of this great artist and to be able to find the same "beauty" in everyday life, in the faces that we meet and in the landscape that surrounds us. Steve McCurry says: "if you know how to wait people forget your camera and their soul comes out of the open", for the same principle I, dear visitors, wish you to be able to capture the soul of everyday life.
