Diese Ausstellung ist dem Werk des erfolgreichsten Vertreters der "Boissonnas-Dynastie", Fred Boissonnas (1858 -1946), gewidmet. Sie beleuchtet einen Teil seiner Karriere, der sowohl wenig bekannt als auch entscheidend ist: seine Reisen im Mittelmeerraum, die er in den ersten drei Jahrzehnten des 20. Jahrhunderts auf der Suche nach Licht unternahm, Großgriechenland und das unabhängige Ägypten, homerische Stätten und biblische Landschaften. In mehrfacher Zusammenarbeit schuf er ein Werk, das die Subjektivität des fotografischen Aktes und die Fähigkeit des Mediums, das Sichtbare und das Unsichtbare, die physische Geografie und die Poesie, den wissenschaftlichen Ansatz und die Imagination zu verbinden, befürwortet. Damit schlägt er eine neue Interpretation von Landschaften und Weltgeschichte vor.
Die Mehrheit der Werke, die zum ersten Mal präsentiert werden, stammt aus den Sammlungen der Bibliothek Genf. Diese poetische und faszinierende Ausstellung soll uns auch viel über die Geschichte der ambivalenten und leidenschaftlichen Beziehungen zwischen Europa und dem Mittelmeerraum lehren.
Diese Ausstellung wird von den Museen für Kunst und Geschichte, der Bibliothek von Genf und der Universität Genf organisiert.
Cette exposition est consacrée à l’œuvre du représentant le plus fécond de la « dynastie Boissonnas », Fred Boissonnas (1858 -1946). Elle met en valeur un pan de sa carrière à la fois méconnu et crucial : ses voyages en Méditerranée qu’il parcourt durant les trois premières décennies du XXe siècle à la recherche de la lumière, de la Grande Grèce et de l’Égypte indépendante, des lieux homériques et des paysages bibliques. Grâce à de multiples collaborations, il crée un œuvre prônant la subjectivité de l’acte photographique et la capacité du médium à connecter le visible et l’invisible, la géographie physique et la poésie, la démarche scientifique et l’imagination. Il propose ainsi une interprétation nouvelle des paysages et de l’histoire du monde.
Présentées pour la première fois, la majorité des œuvres proviennent de fonds patrimoniaux conservés par la Bibliothèque de Genève. Poétique et fascinante, cette exposition se veut aussi riche en enseignements sur l’histoire des relations ambivalentes et passionnées entre l’Europe et la Méditerranée.

The exhibition is dedicated to the oeuvre of the most prolifi c member of the “Boissonnas dynasty”, Fred Boissonnas (1858-1946). It sheds light on a whole aspect of his career that is both underappreciated and crucial: his journeys on the Mediterranean Sea, which he spent the fi rst three decades of the 20th century roaming in search of light, of the Great Greece and free Egypt, of Homeric settings and Biblical landscapes. Thanks to multiple collaborations, he has created a body of work that promote the subjectivity of the photographic process and the capacity of photography to reconcile the visible with the invisible, geographic features with poetry, a scientifi c process with imagination. Through his work, he proposed a new interpretation of landscapes and our world’s history.
Most of his photographs, presented here for the fi rst time, are part of bequeathed collections now owned by the City of Geneva. Both poetic and mesmerising, this exhibition also attempts to provide insight into the ambivalent and passionate relationship between Europe and the Mediterranean.
