Belleville ist ein Stadtteil im Nordosten von Paris, der sich an der Kreuzung der Bezirke 10, 11, 19 und 20 befindet. Lange Zeit berühmt für seine Volkstänze, seine Guinguettes und seine Folies, ist Belleville heute ein gemischtes Viertel - und im Prozess der Gentrifizierung -, in dem sich sehr unterschiedliche Bevölkerungen verschiedener Herkunft mischen und vermischen.
Von 2009 bis 2019 bin ich durch dieses Viertel gereist, um seine Räume und Details zu fotografieren und die Bewohner zu porträtieren. Verbunden mit einer Fotografie, die sich mit der Welt in einer einfachen und direkten, aber dennoch anspruchsvollen Beziehung auseinandersetzt, wollte ich durch diese Bilder meine Verbundenheit mit diesem Pariser Viertel zeigen, in dem ich lebte. Ich wollte auch einen Beitrag zur Erneuerung der Ikonographie des Nordostens von Paris leisten, der in den 50er und 60er Jahren weitgehend fotografiert und seitdem etwas vernachlässigt wurde.
Diese Arbeit ist auch die meiner Lehre der Fotografie nicht als Technik, sondern als eine Erfahrung der Begegnung. Indem ich jeden Tag in denselben Straßen spazieren ging, in einem kleinen Umkreis, und jeden Tag in denselben Bars einen Kaffee trank, baute ich geduldig eine Gewohnheit auf, die in der Tat eine tägliche Erfahrung der Wiederentdeckung war. Durch diese Bilder erfuhr ich das Wertvollste, was Fotografie haben kann: die Qualität unserer Beziehung zur Welt zu vertiefen.
Belleville est un quartier du Nord-Est de Paris situé à la croisée des 10eme, 11eme, 19eme et 20eme arrondissements. Longtemps célèbre pour ses bals populaires, ses guinguettes et ses Folies, Belleville est aujourd’hui un quartier mélangé - et en voie de gentrification - où se côtoient et se mélangent des populations très diverses, et de diverses origines.
De 2009 à 2019, c’est ce quartier que j’ai parcouru pour en photographier les espaces et les détails, et faire le portrait de ses habitants. Attaché à une photographie qui engage avec le monde un rapport simple et direct, mais exigeant, j’ai voulu par ces images témoigner mon attachement à ce quartier parisien, où je vivais. J’ai voulu aussi contribuer à renouveler l’iconographie du nord-est de Paris, largement photographié dans les années 50 et 60, et quelque peu délaissé depuis.
Ce travail est aussi celui de mon apprentissage de la photographie non pas comme technique mais comme expérience de rencontre. En marchant chaque jour dans les mêmes rues, sur un petit périmètre, en prenant chaque jour le café dans les mêmes bars, j’ai construit patiemment une habitude qui fut, en fait, une expérience quotidienne de redécouverte. Au travers de ces images j’ai fait l’expérience de ce que la photographie peut avoir de plus précieux: approfondir la qualité de notre relation au monde.
Belleville è un quartiere a nord-est di Parigi, situato all'incrocio del 10, 11, 19 e 20 arrondissement. Da tempo famosa per le sue danze popolari, le sue guinguette e le sue Folies, Belleville è oggi un quartiere misto - e in via di gentrificazione - dove si mescolano e si mescolano popolazioni molto diverse e di varia origine.
Dal 2009 al 2019, ho viaggiato attraverso questo quartiere per fotografare i suoi spazi e i suoi dettagli, e per fare dei ritratti dei suoi abitanti. Attaccato a una fotografia che si impegna con il mondo in un rapporto semplice e diretto, ma esigente, ho voluto attraverso queste immagini mostrare il mio attaccamento a questo quartiere parigino, dove ho vissuto. Volevo anche contribuire al rinnovamento dell'iconografia del nord-est di Parigi, in gran parte fotografata negli anni '50 e '60, e da allora un po' trascurata.
Questo lavoro è anche quello del mio apprendistato di fotografia non come tecnica ma come esperienza di incontro. Camminando ogni giorno nelle stesse strade, su un piccolo perimetro, prendendo un caffè ogni giorno negli stessi bar, ho pazientemente costruito un'abitudine che è stata, di fatto, un'esperienza quotidiana di riscoperta. Attraverso queste immagini ho sperimentato la cosa più preziosa che la fotografia può avere: approfondire la qualità del nostro rapporto con il mondo.
Belleville is a district in the North-East of Paris located at the crossroads of the 10th, 11th, 19th and 20th districts. Long famous for its folk dances, its guinguettes and its Folies, Belleville is today a mixed neighborhood - and in the process of gentrification - where very diverse populations of various origins mix and mingle.
From 2009 to 2019, I travelled through this neighborhood to photograph its spaces and details, and to take portraits of its inhabitants. Attached to a photography that engages with the world in a simple and direct, yet demanding relationship, I wanted through these images to show my attachment to this Parisian neighborhood, where I lived. I also wanted to contribute to the renewal of the iconography of northeastern Paris, largely photographed in the 50s and 60s, and somewhat neglected since.
This work is also that of my apprenticeship of photography not as a technique but as an experience of encounter. By walking every day in the same streets, on a small perimeter, having coffee every day in the same bars, I patiently built up a habit that was, in fact, a daily experience of rediscovery. Through these images I experienced what photography can have the most precious thing: to deepen the quality of our relationship with the world.
