Die Galerie CAMERA WORK präsen[ert ab dem 11. Dezember 2021 die Ausstellung »Arthur Elgort«, die mit mehr als 40, teils großforma[gen Arbeiten des international renommierten Fotografen zeigt, wie dieser das Genre der Modefotografie ab den frühen 1970er Jahren stilprägend veränderte. Es ist die erste Einzelausstellung des Fotokünstlers in Deutschland.
Arthur Elgort wurde 1940 in New York City geboren. Als Teenager besuchte er die prestigeträchtige Stuyvesant High School und studierte im Anschluss Malerei am Hunter College. Dort stellte er alsbald fest, dass er sich künstlerisch mannigfacher ausdrücken wolle; und es folgte die Auseinandersetzung mit Fotografie. Diese mündete in die Entdeckung von Talent und Leidenschaft für das künstlerische Medium, und kurz darauf, 1971, debütierte Arthur Elgort als Fotograf in der britischen »Vogue«. Damit schuf er sich einen bleibenden Platz in der Welt der Modefotografie und beeinflusst diese in seiner nunmehr 50-jährigen Laupahn bis heute maßgeblich.
Arthur Elgort brachte zu Beginn der 1970er Jahre frischen Wind in die bis dahin starre Studiowelt der Modeshootings. Ganz im Zeichen der Impressionisten, ermutigte der einstige Malerei-Student die Models frei zu agieren und schuf mit ihnen draußen in der »wirklichen Welt« eine Schnappschuss-Ästhetik jenseits der zu der Zeit gegenwär[gen Norm. Die Ausstellung zeigt eben jene lebendigen Models, die mit wenig Make-up und in natürlichem Licht von Arthur Elgort in seiner ganz unverkennbaren Handschrift porträtiert wurden. Darunter sind mehrere weltbekannte Motive von Modeikonen und Supermodels wie Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Gia, Linda Evangelista und Beverly Johnson.
Neben diesen ikonischen Arbeiten, bietet die Ausstellung zudem Einblicke in Arthur Elgorts bestechende Vielseitigkeit als Fotokünstler, in deren Rahmen eine leidenschaftliche fotografische Auseinandersetzung mit dem klassischen BalleE erfolgte und verblüffend gelöste Künstlerporträts mit den Rolling Stones und ihrem weltberühmten Frontmann Mick Jagger entstanden.
À partir du 11 décembre 2021, la galerie CAMERA WORK présentera l'exposition "Arthur Elgort", qui montre comment le photographe de renommée internationale a changé le genre de la photographie de mode de manière déterminante à partir du début des années 1970 avec plus de 40 œuvres, en partie de grand format. Il s'agit de la première exposition personnelle de l'artiste photographe en Allemagne.
Arthur Elgort est né à New York en 1940. Adolescent, il a fréquenté la prestigieuse Stuyvesant High School et a poursuivi ses études de peinture au Hunter College. C'est là qu'il s'est rapidement rendu compte qu'il voulait s'exprimer artistiquement de manière plus diversifiée, ce qui l'a amené à explorer la photographie. C'est ainsi qu'il a découvert son talent et sa passion pour le médium artistique. Peu après, en 1971, Arthur Elgort a fait ses débuts en tant que photographe dans le magazine britannique "Vogue". Il s'est ainsi fait une place durable dans le monde de la photographie de mode, qu'il continue d'influencer de manière significative au cours de ses 50 ans de carrière.
Au début des années 1970, Arthur Elgort a apporté une bouffée d'air frais dans l'univers jusque-là rigide des studios de tournage de mode. Dans l'esprit des impressionnistes, l'ancien étudiant en peinture a encouragé les modèles à agir librement et a créé une esthétique instantanée avec eux dans le "monde réel", au-delà de la norme de l'époque. L'exposition présente ces mêmes modèles pleins de vie, représentés avec peu de maquillage et à la lumière naturelle par Arthur Elgort dans son style très particulier. Parmi eux figurent plusieurs sujets mondialement connus d'icônes de la mode et de top models tels que Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Gia, Linda Evangelista et Beverly Johnson.
Outre ces œuvres emblématiques, l'exposition offre également un aperçu de la polyvalence captivante d'Arthur Elgort en tant qu'artiste photographe, qui a notamment réalisé une exploration photographique passionnée du ballet classique et des portraits d'artistes d'un détachement étonnant avec les Rolling Stones et leur frontman mondialement connu, Mick Jagger.

The CAMERA WORK gallery will present the exhibition "Arthur Elgort" from December 11, 2021. With more than 40, partly large-format works by the internationally renowned photographer, it shows how he changed the genre of fashion photography in a style-defining way from the early 1970s. It is the first solo exhibition of the photo artist in Germany.
Arthur Elgort was born in New York City in 1940. As a teenager he attended the prestigious Stuyvesant High School and subsequently studied painting at Hunter College. There he soon realized that he wanted to express himself artistically in a more diverse way, and this was followed by an exploration of photography. This led to the discovery of his talent and passion for the artistic medium, and shortly afterwards, in 1971, Arthur Elgort made his debut as a photographer in British "Vogue. In doing so, he created a lasting place for himself in the world of fashion photography and continues to have a significant influence on it in his now 50-year laupahn.
At the beginning of the 1970s, Arthur Elgort brought a breath of fresh air into the previously rigid studio world of fashion shoots. In the spirit of the Impressionists, the former painting student encouraged the models to act freely and created a snapshot aesthetic with them out in the "real world" beyond the norm of the time. The exhibition features those same vibrant models, portrayed with little makeup and in natural light by Arthur Elgort in his signature style. Among them are several world-famous subjects of fashion icons and supermodels such as Kate Moss, Christy Turlington, Helena Christensen, Cindy Crawford, Claudia Schiffer, Gia, Linda Evangelista and Beverly Johnson.
