Nobuyoshi Araki (*1940) ist einer der einflussreichsten japanischen Künstler der Gegenwart. Seine Arbeiten sorgen weit über das klassische Fotopublikum hinaus für Aufmerksamkeit und Kontroversen.
Anlässlich seines 80. Geburtstages und entstanden in enger Kooperation mit Araki zeigt die Ausstellung ARAKISS ab 19. Mai im WestLicht erstmals Fotografien aus seiner neuesten, 2020 entstandenen Serie Paradise. Dabei werden die großformatigen Stillleben in den Kontext von Publikationen und Arbeiten aus sechs Jahrzehnten gestellt – von Arakis ersten Aufnahmen über berühmte Serien wie Sentimental Journey und Erotos bis zu seinen bekanntesten Bondage-Motiven. Beleuchtet werden so wiederkehrende Themen im Werk des Künstlers, wie die obsessive Beschäftigung mit Sexualität und Tod, die Vermischung von dokumentarischer und fiktionaler Erzählung und Arakis Auseinandersetzung mit der Zensur.
Den roten Faden der Ausstellung bilden Arakis Bücher, die einen zentralen Stellenwert in seinem Schaffen einnehmen. Viele seiner Meisterwerke sind heute begehrte Sammlerstücke und veranschaulichen auf eindrückliche Weise, wie das Medium Fotografie im Medium Buch seine kongeniale Ergänzung finden kann. Mit der Präsentation von mehr als 300 Bänden aus der Sammlung OstLicht ist die WestLicht Ausstellung die bislang umfassendste Retrospektive dieses in seinem Umfang und seiner Vielschichtigkeit einzigartigen Œuvres.
Um dem unermüdlichen künstlerischen Schaffensdrang Arakis Rechnung zu tragen, ist ARAKISS als häuserübergreifende Doppelausstellung konzipiert. Die Galerie OstLicht präsentiert ergänzend zur WestLicht Ausstellung zeitgleich weitere Aspekte in Arakis Werk.

À l'occasion de son 80e anniversaire et créée en étroite collaboration avec Araki, l'exposition ARAKISS présentera pour la première fois à WestLicht, à partir du 19 mai, des photographies de sa dernière série Paradise, créée en 2020. Les natures mortes de grand format sont placées dans le contexte de publications et d'œuvres datant de six décennies - des premières photographies d'Araki aux séries célèbres telles que Sentimental Journey et Erotos, en passant par ses motifs de bondage les plus connus. Ainsi, des thèmes récurrents dans l'œuvre de l'artiste sont éclairés, comme sa préoccupation obsessionnelle pour la sexualité et la mort, le mélange du documentaire et de la fiction, et la confrontation d'Araki avec la censure.
Le fil conducteur de l'exposition est constitué par les livres d'Araki, qui occupent une place centrale dans son œuvre. Nombre de ses chefs-d'œuvre sont aujourd'hui des pièces de collection très convoitées et illustrent de manière impressionnante la façon dont le médium de la photographie peut trouver son complément agréable dans le médium du livre. Avec la présentation de plus de 300 volumes de la collection OstLicht, l'exposition WestLicht est la rétrospective la plus complète à ce jour de cette œuvre, unique par son ampleur et sa complexité.
Afin de rendre justice à l'inlassable élan artistique d'Araki, ARAKISS a été conçue comme une double exposition inter-maison. En plus de l'exposition WestLicht, la Galerie OstLicht présente en même temps d'autres aspects de l'œuvre d'Araki.

In occasione del suo 80° compleanno e creata in stretta collaborazione con Araki, la mostra ARAKISS presenterà per la prima volta al WestLicht dal 19 maggio le fotografie della sua ultima serie Paradise, creata nel 2020. Le nature morte di grande formato sono collocate nel contesto di pubblicazioni e opere di sei decenni - dalle prime fotografie di Araki a serie famose come Sentimental Journey ed Erotos fino ai suoi motivi bondage più noti. Così, vengono illuminati i temi ricorrenti nel lavoro dell'artista, come la sua ossessiva preoccupazione per la sessualità e la morte, la fusione di narrazione documentaria e finzionale, e il confronto di Araki con la censura.
Il filo conduttore della mostra sono i libri di Araki, che occupano un posto centrale nella sua opera. Molti dei suoi capolavori sono oggi ambiti oggetti da collezione e illustrano in modo impressionante come il mezzo fotografico possa trovare il suo congeniale complemento nel mezzo del libro. Con la presentazione di più di 300 volumi della collezione OstLicht, la mostra WestLicht è la retrospettiva più completa fino ad oggi di questa opera, unica per portata e complessità.
Per rendere giustizia all'instancabile spinta artistica di Araki, ARAKISS è stata concepita come una doppia mostra inter-casa. Oltre alla mostra di WestLicht, la Galerie OstLicht presenta contemporaneamente altri aspetti del lavoro di Araki.

On the occasion of his 80th birthday and created in close cooperation with Araki, the exhibition ARAKISS will show photographs from his latest series Paradise, created in 2020, for the first time at WestLicht from 19 May. The large-format still lifes are placed in the context of publications and works from six decades – from Araki's first photographs to famous series such as Sentimental Journey and Erotos to his best-known bondage motifs. Recurring themes in the artist's work are illuminated, such as his obsessive preoccupation with sexuality and death, the blending of documentary and fictional narrative, and Araki's confrontation with censorship.
The common thread of the exhibition is Araki's books, which occupy a central place in his oeuvre. Many of his masterpieces are coveted collector's items today and impressively illustrate how the medium of photography can find its congenial complement in the medium of the book. With the presentation of more than 300 volumes from the OstLicht Collection, the WestLicht exhibition is the most comprehensive retrospective to date of this oeuvre, which is unique in its scope and complexity.
In order to do justice to Araki's tireless artistic drive, ARAKISS has been conceived as a double exhibition spanning two houses. Coinciding with the WestLicht exhibition, OstLicht Gallery will present further aspects of Araki's oeuvre.
