Joel Sternfeld zählt zu den wichtigsten Vertretern der New Color Photography, die in den 1970er-Jahren die Farbe für die Kunstfotografie entdecken. Als kritischer Beobachter reist Sternfeld über Jahre hinweg durch die USA und hält in umfangreichen Serien das Land und seine Bewohner und Bewohnerinnen in all ihren Eigenheiten und Widersprüchen fest. In seiner grandiosen Serie American Prospects (1978-86) widmet er sich der Beziehung des Menschen zu der von ihm geprägten amerikanischen Landschaft. Die in brillanten Farben festgehaltenen alltäglichen und oftmals skurrilen Begebenheiten zeigen nicht nur die zunehmend wirtschaftlich erschlossene und von Umweltschäden bedrohte Natur, sondern erlauben auch Rückschlüsse auf die sozial-politischen Zustände der Zeit. American Prospects ist Teil einer kapitalen Schenkung des Künstlers an die Albertina, die in dieser Ausstellung zum ersten Mal auszugsweise präsentiert wird.

Observateur critique, Sternfeld parcourt les États-Unis pendant des années et immortalise dans de vastes séries le pays, ses habitants et ses habitantes dans toutes leurs particularités et leurs contradictions. Dans sa grandiose série American Prospects (1978-86), il se consacre à la relation entre l'homme et le paysage américain qu'il a façonné. Les événements quotidiens et souvent bizarres, saisis dans des couleurs brillantes, ne montrent pas seulement la nature de plus en plus exploitée économiquement et menacée par les dommages environnementaux, mais permettent également de tirer des conclusions sur les conditions socio-politiques de l'époque. American Prospects fait partie d'une donation capitale de l'artiste à l'Albertina, dont des extraits sont présentés pour la première fois dans cette exposition.

Come osservatore critico, Sternfeld ha viaggiato per anni negli Stati Uniti e ha immortalato il Paese e i suoi abitanti in tutte le loro peculiarità e contraddizioni in ampie serie. Joel Sternfeld numbers among the most important protagonists of the New Color Photography movement, which discovered color for art photography in the 1970s. Sternfeld has spent years traveling around the United States as a critical observer, documenting the country and its inhabitants in all their idiosyncrasies and contradictions. His grandiose series American Prospects (1978–86) focuses on how human beings relate to the American landscape—a landscape they’ve helped to shape. In addition to exposing a natural world subject to economic exploitation and threatened by accumulating ecological damage, the frequently whimsical everyday scenes captured by Sternfeld in this series also permit inferences as to the sociopolitical conditions of that era. American Prospects is part of a major donation to the ALBERTINA Museum by the artist himself, and the present exhibition presents a first-ever survey of these donated works.
