Bonjour la Nuit!
Festlich oder beunruhigend, einsam oder fantastisch, die Nacht - ein Thema, das so alt ist wie "die Nacht der Zeiten"! - hat Künstler schon immer inspiriert... "Nacht". Nachtmusik", komponiert von Mozart, "Sternennacht", gemalt von Van Gogh, "Hymne der Nacht", geschrieben von Lamartine. Für Fotografen war die Nacht zunächst eine Herausforderung. Eine technische Herausforderung, da die Etymologie des Wortes Fotografie "mit Licht schreiben" der Aufnahme von dunklen oder dämmrigen Szenen entgegensteht. Und dennoch ... Die Nacht erlaubt alle Freiheiten. Sie befreit sich von der Realität, um in eine Dimension einzutreten, in der sich die Farben emanzipieren, die Perspektive verflacht und die Horizontlinie verschwindet, was unsere Wahrnehmung verändert. Die Dinge werden unscharf, die Konturen undeutlich und in den Städten ersetzt künstliches Licht den Mond und die Sterne, bis sie ganz verschwinden... In der kollektiven Vorstellung wird die Nacht gemeinhin als eine andere Welt wahrgenommen. Der Philosoph Michaël Foessel, Autor eines Standardwerks zu diesem Thema, betont: "Der Nacht zuzustimmen bedeutet, sich den einzigartigen Erfahrungen zu unterwerfen, die nur sie möglich macht. Ob gut oder schlecht, intim und sensibel, sie eröffnet einen Raum, in dem man endlich ohne Zeugen leben kann."
Beim Festival du Regard möchten wir die Nacht nicht nur zum Ausdruck des Endes des Tages machen, sondern zum Beginn einer anderen Erfahrung. Zu dieser Erfahrung laden wir Sie ein, indem wir Sie durch eine Galerie mit verlassenen Geschäften im ältesten Flügel des berühmten Einkaufszentrums 3 Fontaines in Cergy schlendern lassen. Ein einzigartiger Ort, der von der Schriftstellerin Annie 6 Ernaux in "Regarde les lumières, mon amour" beschrieben und in ihr berühmtes "Journal du dehors" aufgenommen wurde. Die Nacht an einem Ort zu thematisieren, der dem Konsum gewidmet ist und in dem die Geschäfte mit tausend Lichtern glänzen, um Passanten anzulocken, ist eine Herausforderung, der wir uns ohne zu zögern gestellt haben... Denn es ist unsere Aufgabe, die Arbeiten der Fotografen zu beleuchten, die sich dieses faszinierenden Themas angenommen haben. Von den Pionieren der Langzeitbelichtung, Léon Gimpel oder Brassaï, über Sterngucker wie Juliette Agnel und Thierry Cohen bis hin zu den unumgänglichen Nachtvögeln Anders Petersen, Todd Hido oder Merry Alpern - sie alle haben es verstanden, die Macht des Dunkels und das Leuchten der Schatten zu nutzen, um uns in eine andere Dimension zu versetzen, die sich in unserem Titel in Form eines Oxymorons zusammenfassen lässt: Bonjour la Nuit!
Festive ou inquiète, solitaire ou fantastique, la nuit - thème aussi ancien que « la nuit des temps » ! - a toujours inspiré les artistes… « Musique de Nuit » composée par Mozart, « Nuit étoilée » peinte par Van Gogh, « l’hymne de la nuit » écrite par Lamartine. Chez les photographes la nuit a d’abord été un défi. Un défi technique, l’étymologie du mot photographie « écrire avec la lumière » étant contraire à l’enregistrement de scènes obscures ou crépusculaires. Et pourtant... La nuit autorise toutes les libertés. Elle s’affranchit du réel pour faire entrer dans une dimension où les couleurs s’émancipent, la perspective s’aplanit et la ligne d’horizon disparaît, altérant notre perception. Les choses deviennent floues, les contours indistincts et dans les villes, les lumières artificielles viennent remplacer la lune et les étoiles, jusqu’à les faire disparaître… Dans l’imaginaire collectif, la nuit est perçue communément comme un autre monde. Le philosophe Michaël Foessel, auteur d’un ouvrage référence sur ce sujet, souligne : « consentir à la nuit c’est accepter de se soumettre aux expériences singulières qu’elle seule rend possibles. Bonne ou mauvaise, intime et sensible, elle ouvre un espace où l’on peut enfin, vivre sans témoin. »
Au Festival du Regard, nous avons donc envie de faire de la nuit, non pas simplement l’expression de la fin du jour, mais le début d’une autre expérience. Une expérience à laquelle nous vous convions en vous faisant déambuler à l’intérieur d’une galerie de boutiques abandonnées de la plus ancienne aile du fameux Centre Commercial des 3 Fontaines de Cergy. Un lieu singulier décrit par l’écrivaine Annie 6 Ernaux dans « Regarde les lumières, mon amour » et repris dans son célèbre « Journal du dehors ». Traiter de la nuit dans un lieu dévoué à la consommation où les magasins brillent de mille feux pour attirer les passants, est un défi que nous n’avons pas hésité à relever... Car c’est notre rôle de mettre en lumière les travaux des photographes qui se sont emparés de ce sujet fascinant. Des pionniers de la pose longue, Léon Gimpel ou Brassaï, aux incontournables oiseaux de nuit que sont Anders Petersen, Todd Hido ou Merry Alpern, en passant par des décrocheurs d’étoiles tels que Juliette Agnel et Thierry Cohen, ils ont tour à tour su utiliser le pouvoir de l’obscur, les lueurs de l’ombre, pour nous faire basculer dans une autre dimension qui se résume par notre titre en forme d’oxymore : Bonjour la Nuit !
Festosa o preoccupata, solitaria o fantastica, la notte - un tema antico come "la notte del tempo"! - ha sempre ispirato gli artisti... Musica della notte" composta da Mozart, "Notte stellata" dipinta da Van Gogh, "l'inno della notte" scritto da Lamartine. Per i fotografi, la notte è stata innanzitutto una sfida. Una sfida tecnica, poiché l'etimologia della parola fotografia "scrivere con la luce" è contraria alla registrazione di scene buie o crepuscolari. Eppure... La notte permette ogni tipo di libertà. Ci libera dalla realtà per entrare in una dimensione in cui i colori si emancipano, la prospettiva si appiattisce e la linea dell'orizzonte scompare, alterando la nostra percezione. Le cose diventano sfocate, i contorni indistinti e nelle città le luci artificiali sostituiscono la luna e le stelle, fino a farle scomparire... Nell'immaginario collettivo, la notte è comunemente percepita come un altro mondo. Il filosofo Michaël Foessel, autore di un'opera di riferimento su questo tema, sottolinea: "acconsentire alla notte significa accettare di sottomettersi alle esperienze singolari che essa sola rende possibili. Buono o cattivo, intimo e sensibile, apre uno spazio in cui possiamo finalmente vivere senza testimoni.
Al Festival du Regard vogliamo quindi che la notte non sia semplicemente l'espressione della fine della giornata, ma l'inizio di un'altra esperienza. Un'esperienza a cui vi invitiamo portandovi a passeggiare in una galleria di negozi abbandonati nell'ala più antica del famoso Centro Commerciale 3 Fontane di Cergy. Un luogo singolare descritto dalla scrittrice Annie Ernaux in "Regarde les lumières, mon amour" e incluso nel suo famoso "Journal du dehors". Affrontare la notte in un luogo votato al consumo, dove i negozi brillano di mille luci per attirare i passanti, è una sfida che non abbiamo esitato a raccogliere... Perché è nostro compito mettere in luce il lavoro dei fotografi che hanno affrontato questo affascinante tema. Dai pionieri della lunga esposizione, Léon Gimpel o Brassaï, agli immancabili uccelli della notte come Anders Petersen, Todd Hido o Merry Alpern, passando per fotografi di grido come Juliette Agnel e Thierry Cohen, tutti hanno sfruttato il potere dell'oscurità, il bagliore delle ombre, per portarci in un'altra dimensione, che può essere riassunta dal nostro titolo, sotto forma di ossimoro: Bonjour la Nuit!

For photographers the night was first a challenge. A technical challenge, the etymology of the word photography "writing with light" being contrary to the recording of dark or twilight scenes. And yet... The night authorizes all liberties. It frees us from reality to enter a dimension where colors are emancipated, perspective is flattened and the horizon line disappears, altering our perception. Things become blurred, the contours indistinct and in cities, artificial lights come to replace the moon and the stars, until they disappear... In the collective imagination, the night is commonly perceived as another world. The philosopher Michaël Foessel, author of a reference work on this subject, underlines: "to consent to the night is to accept to submit to the singular experiences that it alone makes possible. Good or bad, intimate and sensitive, it opens a space where we can finally live without witnesses.
At the Festival du Regard, we therefore want to make the night, not simply the expression of the end of the day, but the beginning of another experience. An experience to which we invite you to wander through a gallery of abandoned stores in the oldest wing of the famous 3 Fountains Shopping Center in Cergy. A singular place described by the writer Annie Ernaux in "Regarde les lumières, mon amour" and in her famous "Journal du dehors". Dealing with the night in a place devoted to consumption where the stores shine with a thousand lights to attract passers-by, is a challenge that we did not hesitate to take up... Because it is our role to highlight the work of photographers who have taken up this fascinating subject. From the pioneers of the long exposure, Léon Gimpel or Brassaï, to the unavoidable night birds that are Anders Petersen, Todd Hido or Merry Alpern, through star gazers such as Juliette Agnel and Thierry Cohen, they knew how to use the power of the dark, the glow of the shadow, to make us fall into another dimension which is summarized by our title in the form of an oxymoron: Bonjour la Nuit!
